Robert Meinhard Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 23, 2011.
MEINHARD, Robert Harvey, 62, loved by everyone who knew him, went home to heaven on January 20, 2011, after a long fight with pulmonary fibrosis lung disease. He is survived by his loving wife, Charlyne Aiken Meinhard; two adoring daughters, Holly Elizabeth and Lauren Esther; and his spunky grandson, Julian Ace, who is crazy about his "Grampy." He was preceded in death by his mother, Esther O'Blennis Meinhard; and his father, Ned Harrison Meinhard, both of Richmond, Va; aunt and uncle, Isobel and Robert Meinhard of Staunton; and aunt, Margaret Meinhard Steinbrecker of St. Petersburg, Fla. Rob was a dedicated public servant who applied his high intellect and expansive energies to maintaining and improving the fiscal condition of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He retired in July of 2010, with 35-plus years of service in positions of senior audit supervisor within the Auditor of Public Accounts and state accounts receivable coordinator in the Department of Accounts. He achieved the certifications of CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) and CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner). Rob graduated with a B.S. in accounting from the School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a founding member of VCU's Sigma Sigma Sigma Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, an international business fraternity. In addition to his hard work and devotion to his family, Rob was a man of many talents and interests. A long-distance runner in high school and college, Rob loved hiking, camping and archery. Rob's love of archeology, Civil War and World War II history, science and science fiction are reflected in his extensive book collection and internet searches. An active member of the Richmond Chess Club and US Chess Federation until the birth of his first child, he retired from tournament chess at the Master level. Rob's interests turned to pipe collecting, and he became active in the Coterie of Richmond Pipe Smokers. These friends will miss Rob tremendously, as will his dear friends and fellow fountain pen enthusiasts in the Richmond Pen Club. Born in Staunton, Va., Rob moved to Richmond with his family in 1956, where he began attending Barton Heights Baptist Church, renamed Northminster Baptist Church in its current location in Ginter Park. Rob dearly loved his church and Northminster friends, growing up in the love and admonition of generations of caring Christian extended family there. His commitment to active service was evident to his co-workers in the Bus Ministry, the TV Ministry, and his beloved friends in the Appel Bible Class. A memorial service to celebrate Rob's life will be held on Sunday, January 30, 2011, 3 p.m., at Northminster Baptist Church, 3121 Moss Side Ave. Richmond, Va. 23222-2523. For directions see northminsterchurch.com. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Northminster Baptist Church or the American Lung Association.

Daddy It's been 9 years and 4 months and I'm just finding this page now. I had no idea it existed until I accidentally stumbled across it and I have to say, I needed to find it more now than ever. God's timing am I right? I have no idea why I'm signing this guest book now, but I'm compelled to do so. I love you and miss you, that simple thought brings tears to my eyes and makes it hard to breathe every time. I'm lucky though. Not only did I get to love you and learn from you for my first 21 years, I also still get to hear your voice when I need it. I will forever have the last voicemail you ever left me saved in my phone mailbox. It pretty much sums up everything you were in your kind, gentle voice. "EEH, love you take care." Every time I listen to it, I picture you doing the bunny ears. Now if only I could get a hair ruffle so I could scold you to stop. It's been a long and rough 9 years. Not having you here for them has made it seem like forever and yesterday all at once. I'm trying to be strong and make you proud, but you have to keep looking out for me please bc good grief do I still need you. I'll talk to you soon, say hi to Nanny and the pets for me please.
With all my love,
your youngest rabbit

Dear Charlyne,

So sorry to hear of Robert's passing. We are praying for you and thinking of you and family at this difficult time. It is sad for such a great loss but perhaps some peace can be found in knowing that Robert is in Heaven now.

Jennifer and I also miss seeing you and Lauren at Northminster Church. Our girls were so fond of having Lauren for their babysitter.

Take good care,
David, Jennifer, Abby and Anna Hepler

Charlyne, Holly, and Lauren: Our thoughts and prayers will be with you in this time of loss. Your husband and father was a trusted boss and caring co-worker who was loved and respected by all he met. He was NEVER at a loss for words with his wonderful sense of humor and whit. Rob's work for the Commonwealth with Accounts Receivable management and collection was cutting edge and served as a model for many other states. What a true joy it was to work for him. He will be missed, but our memories of him will always be cherished.

Charlyne, Holly, Lauren, and Ace: I am so very sorry for your loss. Rob was a great guy! Kind, considerate, compassionate, QUIET! He was easy to talk to and he treated all of us and our questions with respect and decency. I never asked him a "stupid" question where he made me feel "stupid" for asking it....and I ask a lot of "stupid" questions! I will miss Rob but I'm so very glad to know he is no longer suffering and is with our Lord and his many loved ones who went before him to ready his mansion in heaven! May God bless you all! You will continue to be in my prayers.

We celebrate a life well lived and will cherish his memory forever. I remember him as a man who was not afraid to shake things up a bit when needed, never to damage, but always to improve. His spirit will live on in us.
