NICHOLAS GATES Obituary

GATES--Nicholas St. George,

died on October 24, 2017 in New York City. He was born in San Francisco, California on March 7, 1991. As Lao Tzu wrote, "The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long." Physically and intellectually gifted, Nick did burn very, very brightly. He attended Ross School in Ross, California and St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. He graduated summa cum laude from St. Paul's School and was on the Varsity Wrestling (captain), Varsity Track (captain) and Varsity Cross Country teams. At graduation from St. Paul's he received the Benjamin Rush Toland Prize for "united intellectual achievement, athletic ability, and a gallant spirit." He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with an AB in Chemistry with Honors and a Citation in Mandarin Chinese. At Harvard he was a freshman walk-on to the Lightweight Crew and rowed for four years. He contributed to four undefeated regular seasons (Freshman, Junior Varsity and two Varsity), one IRA National Championship in the Varsity Lightweight Four and two IRA National Championships and Eastern Sprints Championships in the Varsity Lightweight Eight. He was a member of the Porcellian Club. After graduating from Harvard, Nick worked at Athyrium Capital Management as an Investment Analyst, J.P. Morgan Securities as a Investment Banking Analyst and, at the time of his death, at Clayton Dubilier & Rice as an Associate. He loved skiing, scuba diving, fly fishing, science fiction films and books, and music. Nick is survived by his parents, Natalie Bigelow Gates and Courtlandt Dixon Gates, and his brothers, Courtlandt and William. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, Joan Bryan Gates and Peter Parker McNair Gates, and aunts, uncles and cousins. There will be a private celebration of Nick's life. Should friends desire, memorial donations may made in honor of Nick to Manitos at manitosparaguay.com or Shatterproof at shatterproof.org.

I was a year behind Nick on the wrestling team at SPS. An expression of his own humility, Nick always made me feel good about myself. Although we only crossed paths a handful of times after graduation, I just wanted to say that I still think about Nick and that he remains an inspiration to me.

Nick-there isnt a day that goes by that Doug and I arent talking about you. We both miss you so much. I miss coming home to you and you telling Doug and I that you just wanted a boys night and you wanting to watch a horror movie. The last movie we saw together was IT and that day we jumped from movie to movie. I miss spending time with you. You had this ability to brighten the room No matter what happened you where always there making everyone laugh and smile. Rest easy Nick Doug and I miss you everyday buddy. Love you.

Dear Natalie and Courty,
I was shocked and hit with sadness when I read Nicks obituary in Sunday's New York Times. I remember him as a sensitive , bright , beautiful boy. May your many sweet memories , cherished photos and family stories bring you comfort , both now and forever. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I never met Nick but happened to see his obituary and - with four high-achieving 'millennial' sons of my own - was stunned and incredibly saddened by the scope and the tragic mystery of his passing. Amen. (Dr) Michael J Wriston
