I remember Herb as one whose graciousness I could duplicate and whose intelligence I could match. Seeing him in church every Sunday was a plus but I never realized how much he meant to me until he left us.

I was privileged to serve as city librarian in Gladstone with Herb as a member and later the chairman of the Library Advisory Board. I am so sorry to hear that he has passed. What a wonderful man. Many blessings to his family and friends.

On behalf of The Beals family I would like to acknowledge your kind words and remembrances of dad. He truly had a beautiful mind and he could organize and command it. Dad was a humble and dedicated student of history and he has left a helpful mark for many to follow.

Herb was such a gentle man who enlightened so many - My mother, Peggy Carlisle, was honored when he presented her with copies of his books on the history of Gladstone. Blessings to his family.

Herb was an honorable gentleman and a good friend. His depth of knowledge on a wide variety of subjects was only surpassed by his gentle humility. He was a good man who cannot be replaced or forgotten; only fondly remembered.

I knew Herbert when he was a distinguished history graduate student in coursework that I offered at Portland State University. I was honored to supervise his studies which led him to translate and in 1985 to publish "For Honor & Country, the Diary of Bruno De Hezeta", a noteworthy contribution to historical scholarship dealing with 18th century Spanish maritime exploration in the Pacific Northwest. His scholarly contributions have earned lasting recognition from the community of professional historians. I treasure a signed copy of his book.
