Ralph Borchard Obituary

Ralph William Borchard Jr. It is with great sadness that the family of Ralph William Borchard Jr. "Bill" announces his sudden natural passing at the age of 65 on Saturday, July 5, 2014. Bill, a 5th generation Southern California resident and descendant of the pioneering Borchard farming family, grew up alongside a loving family on the "ranch" in Oxnard, Calif. He graduated from Santa Clara High School, where among other extracurricular activities was the starting basketball point guard and tennis star. He built on his farming roots by pursuing agricultural degrees from Ventura College and Fresno State University while playing collegiate tennis. Bill carried on the family agricultural tradition with a 43-year career at Ball Horticultural Company (PanAmerican Seed) in Santa Paula and Guadalupe. During his long tenure as a Seed Production Manager, he supported the company's growth in becoming a global leader in plant development and distribution by managing the planning, strategy and production of flower seed at all the Company's West Coast facilities. It was noted at his 40 years of service award ceremony that it's "safe to say that Bill knows just about everything there is to know about flower and seed production" Ball Horticultural Company not only provided the opportunity to establish his worldwide industry expertise, but more importantly develop lasting relationships with wonderful colleagues. He is remembered fondly by the entire Ball Horticultural family as always having a sincere smile on his face and willing to stop what he was doing to help someone out. In his personal life, Bill lived up to a self-prescribed motto of "we gotta keep making memories because that's all we have." While he traveled the world and was always up for an adventure, he felt the greatest pleasure in the simple experiences: BBQ's, beach sunsets, tending his garden, a hearty laugh, doling out avocados to friendsand most evident sharing special moments with his family and friends, especially his wife Laura and son Paul. Even though he was a few months from retirement, he remained incredibly active with weekly tennis matches, golf games, and was always willing to lend a helping hand with any project. Although his life was a shorter than we all anticipated, we were all touched by his loving heart, gracious generosity and incredible ability to make everyone feel special. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife Laura Gill Borchard; sons Paul Borchard and Nate Balicki (Genevieve); daughter Meg Balicki; grandchildren Bella and Zoey Balicki; sisters Peggy Anderson (Jerry) and Joan Henson (Tom); the mother of his children, Diana Borchard; nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless other family members and dear friends. Bill was preceded in passing by his dearly loved son Eric, and parents Ralph (Papa) and Helen (Mimi). We invite you to join in remembering Bill with visitation from 3 to 5 p.m., Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Wheeler-Smith Mortuary, 2890 S. Higuera, San Luis Obispo. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 12, 2014, at the Borchard ranch in Oxnard, Calif. In lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed in his memory to a memorial endowment at the Horticulture and Crop Science Department, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA 93407 (805-756-2279). I am so saddened to hear of Bill's passing. My prayers go out to Laura and the family. I just got to know Bill briefly when preparing for and DJ'ing for his and Laura's wedding in 2011. By wedding day he and Laura made me feel like part of the family, because of their warm and loving way. I treasure those memories.
Sincerely,
Phil Birdsell

Bill,

We miss you so very much. Your love and warmth were like sunshine in our lives every day. I went through the "Tut" quotes you used to send me and I found one that makes me "smile" thinking of you:

"Some people smile, Bill, to make friends.

Others smile to look younger and live longer.

And then there are those, Bill, who so totally get life, that smiling is all they know.

Cheese,
The Universe"

Love you, Bill. Always.

Dear Paul and Family,
We were shocked and saddened to learn of Bill's death. Jeff fondly remembers YMCA Trailblazer events and father/son adventure hiking and exploring. Everyone contributed something to each trip. Bill, Eric and you were an essential part of the team effort.

Laura and family. I am so sorry for your loss. Bill was such a kind man. Take comfort in knowing that he loved telling everybody how happy he was in life and was always sure to remind me that a rough path will always get better and then would say, I'll bring you some avocados soon. :) I will remember him with great fondness.

Bill was a tennis friend who never failed to be of good cheer and warm regards. He played with the enthusiasm of a young man and all of us appreciated his skill and forbearance . I will sincerely miss his smile and positive outlook. He will be missed. Bill knew what life is worth. I hope to learn from the example he set.

To Bill's family - may your memories give you comfort during this period and in the future.

Bill was a wonderful person and I am so glad to have known him. One of his cousins, Sheila, was always bringing me along to play tennis at the "ranch" and BIll probably had a lot to laugh about watching us. But he never made fun of us. He had such a kind heart.

We have lost a beautiful person and we all will suffer because of this great loss of life. He was a teacher in the best sense of the word: he would not just take the time to answer a question, but explain how he arrived at the answer. I will always remember his patience, his kindness and his great smile. This wonderful mentor and friend will surely be missed.

Bill was a builder and teacher in his profession, and like myself, there are many who owe so much and will always be greatful for the time and effort Bill spent in developing others. All the best and nothing else to Bill's family in this time of sorrow.
