Fereidoun FARASSAT Obituary

HAMPTON - Fereidoun (Feri) Farassat died at home on July 9, 2011 surrounded by his family and their love.
He was born Oct. 20, 1944 in Ramhormoz, Iran, to Golamhassan Farassat and his wife, Fatmeh Roozrokh Farassat. He became a naturalized citizen in January 1981. He was married to Linda Schneider.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his beloved granddaughter, Cassandra Akers.
Surviving are his wife; his daughter, Daria F. Akers and her husband, Todd and daughter, Lesley of Burke, Va.; his daughter, Elizabeth S. Merritt and her husband, Chad and daughter, Amelia of Suffolk, Va.; his sons, Nigel R. Schneider and Jaron L. Farassat; his parents-in-law, C.J. and Ruth Shoemaker; and the extended family.
He immigrated to the United States in 1970. He earned a Ph.D., in Aerospace Engineering, from Cornell under the esteemed Dr. W. R. Sears in 1973. Upon graduation, he started working as an Adjunct Professor for George Washington University, a post he held for 25 years. He continued to teach classes in acoustics and applied mathematics throughout his life. He joined NASA in 1979, beginning his highest passion, his life's work in expanding the field of aeroacoustics. At the time of his death, he was a Senior Research Scientist in the field of Theoretical Aeroacoustics. He had been the recipient of numerous NASA and industry awards, and had published over 130 papers.
Feri read avidly, particularly enjoying biographies and histories. He was a marvelous cook, and enjoyed planning meals for his family as well as to share with his NASA family. He loved mankind and felt a duty to help those less fortunate than himself; for years you could find him in the soup kitchen at the Salvation Army, in Suffolk, on the third Thursday each month with his friends from St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Feri was a loving family man, ready to give a hand, unstinting love and teasing to all. He was never a quitter and served as an inspiration to us all by his refusal to give up or give in, even in the midst of treatments and recovery. His shoes cannot be filled, and he will be sorely missed.
The family requests those wishing to give memorial gifts, contribute to Save the Children or to the Foodbank, rather than giving flowers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Downtown Hampton. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

This eulogy is in memory of Dr. Fereidoun Farassat, who passed away on July 9’ 2011.
I had known Dr. Farassat since he joined NASA – Langley Research Center in 1979 as an Aerospace Technologist in the Acoustics Division. Even though our respective fields of interest were far apart, I being a Theoretical Nuclear Physicist and Dr. Farassat being a Theoretical Aeroacoustics Scientist, we had one thing in common: and that was dissemination of scientific knowledge to the young Americans. I was an Adjunct Professor of Physics at Old Dominion University for 25 years, where as Dr. Farassat worked as Adjunct Professor at George Washington University for a long time. We often met at the Langley Library and compared notes about how our respective graduate students were faring. Dr. Farassat was a fine gentleman who will be will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues. May his soul rest in peace.

This eulogy is in memory of Mr. Redpath, who passed away on July 4’ 2011. Mr. Redpath was my neighbor and friend since mid seventies. Even though our respective fields of interest were not far apart, I being a Theoretical Nuclear Physicist and Mr. Redpath an Experimental Reactor we often met on Thursdays when we hauled our household trash pick-up bins to the roadside and discussed only community social trivia. We seldom discussed nuclear science, even though I was quite familiar with the Nuclear Reactor Technology Department at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, from which Mr. Redpath graduated in 1954.
John Redpath was a soft-spoken gentleman and will be sorely missed by all his friends. May his soul rest in peace.

"I met Feri in Boston (2006) and in Rome (2007): it was a great privilege to discuss on aeroacoustics with him and it was a honor to receive his encouragement at the end of my PhD. Wherever you are, all my prayers are with you." Sincerely.

You will be missed uncle Feri. Although we did not have the pleasure of knowing you better, our mom has kept your memories alive in our house. The story of how you brought my first Lego(s) construction kit for my (Nima) third birthday has motivated me greatly in life. It was meant for ages 10+ but you told my mom to "never underestimate your son's capabilities." With a little help from you, that same day I had completed the structure! Please accept our condolences; you are in our thoughts and hearts, Daria.

Mr.Farassat was such a wonderful human being. We loved to see him out at NASA. He always had time to to stop and say hell and ask how the family was doing. He will truly be missed by all.

July 15, 2011

Although I never worked directly with Feri in a professional sense, I did have the pleasure of engaging with him in many stimulating discussions. He worked directly across the hall from me at NASA until I retired about a year ago. I will greatly miss him and his presence via our continuing email exchanges. My sincere condolences to his family

I was deeply shocked to hear the loss of my brother Fereidoun. We just lost one year ago our older loved brother Faramarz. It is realy hard for our family.
Fereidoun was too young and powerfull to leave as so soon. We, Farassat`s family will keep him for ever in our heart.
Our sincere condolance to his family.

It's very sad that Feri is gone. We first met over 40 years ago, when I was finishing my degree at Cornell and he was just starting work on his. Our overlap was only a month or two. You would not think that was long enough to form a deep friendship. Yet over the years every time our paths crossed it was like meeting a very long time friend, someone I had grown up with. Deepest condolences to his family and all of his friends.

As the youngest sibling of Feri (Dr. Farassat), I have a hard time to believe that he is no longer among us in person. He is the brother who welcomed me to this country when I arrived from my native land to attend collage; the one who also walked me down the aisle on my wedding day on behalf of our father (the late General G.H Farassat) who could not attend the ceremony. We (Faramarz's family, Farhad, Faroakh, Katya, Fereshteh and I) are all extremely saddened by the loss of your father and our beloved brother, dearest Daria. Our deepest sympathy and condolences to you and your family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. May the two brothers (your late uncle Faramarz and Feri) meet in a much better and more peaceful place beyond this world.

I was surprised and saddened to hear of Feri's passing. As an instructor of math classes for NASA/GWU/JIAFS he brought an energy, an enthusiasm, and a fresh approach to make the classes interesting - even a bright spot in the day. He always had time to talk about a technical or nontechnical topic - a chance meeting on the field could turn into an spirited discussion that left you energized. He always had a broad smile and gave me a hearty greeting. I will miss that. Be assured of my prayers.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of a friend and mentor, Feri. Feri was one of the most amazing researchers that I have ever met. He had a unique ability to blend sophisticated mathematics into practical engineering applications. Feri was one of my PhD advisors. His enthusiasm and support for my research enabled me to overcome several obstacles. I will miss him very much. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Feri

I only got to know you well quite recently, after we met in Washington at the AIAA Fellows meeting. You were a great guy and a great researcher too. This really struck me when you were starting your most recent course of medication and still got out two more papers, for immediate publication. You were also the key person who motivated me to write my own most recent paper. Thanks.

I had the privilege to meet Prof. Farassat many years ago in Toulose and, subsequently, in Rome (where I live). I've always considered him a guide and an essential reference in my work and scientific research and I'm very grateful to him for that. My hope is to meet him, sometime and somewhere, to discuss again of our loved Aeroacoustics. My condolences to all of you.

We were excited, based on his academic background, when Feri joined The George Washington University's faculty. Very quickly we learned how much more there was to him than his credentials. Feri was an outstanding teacher, mentor, researcher, and, most of all, a caring and generous person. He epitomized the gentleman and scholar concept. We will miss him.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Feri. One of my first jobs was as a secretary in the Acoustics Branch years ago. Feri always brightened my day just coming in to chat. He loved to share stories about his daughter Daria. For such a brilliant individual he was very down to earth and a very generous man. He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

Feri touched countless hearts with his unrivaled generosity, enthusiasm and concern for others. Our branch is a quiet place as we absorb the loss of our cherished friend and coworker, but we will be strong because Feri was the very epitome of strength and courage! My thoughts and prayers are with his family and it is my hope that they will find comfort in the words of the many people whose lives he touched over the years. May God bless you and give you renewed strength each day.

Feri was a great friend as interested in history (and everything else) as I was, a professional historian. We spent wonderful times together, not always over food. I didn't know he had been fighting for his life, and deeply, deeply regret his passing and my not getting some encouraging word to him. I loved Feri and will never forget him.

Feri was a totally unique individual. He was one of my first friends at NASA and remained a close friend for almost 40 years. The emphasis on Aircraft Noise at the time brought many researchers to Langley for the new Acoustics Division and Feri was one of them. Since everyone was new we were like family and shared our lives together. Over the years we have all gone our separate ways but our memories survive. Feri was a key to many of those memories and we will miss him.

I had the privilege of taking four of Dr. Farassat's classes while doing my D.Sc. work at GW, and he sat on my qualifying exam and dissertation panels. I could tell many stories about our academic adventures together, but they would all come down to Feri's love for the topic and his students, his drive and encouragement, and his delight in seeing students learn and succeed. Feri was a great mentor and teacher, and will be missed.
