Donald Cabana Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 9, 2013.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Donald A. Cabana, a longtime corrections official who oversaw executions as warden at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in the 1980s and later came to oppose the death penalty, died Monday. He was 67.

Cabana died at Wesley Medical Center in Hattiesburg after a long illness, the Mississippi Department of Corrections said.

Cabana spent 40 years in corrections, including stints as warden at Parchman and commissioner of the state Department of Corrections. He was chairman of the criminal justice programs at the University of Southern Mississippi and William Carey University.

He worked as warden at the Harrison County jail. He also worked in the Missouri corrections system.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Hattiesburg with burial in Highland Cemetery.

Mississippi Corrections Commissioner Christopher B. Epps said Tuesday in a statement that Cabana worked for the Department of Correc tions when Epps was a correctional officer at Parchman and after Epps became commissioner.

"Dr. Cabana was well-known and well-respected in the corrections community," Epps said. "We were extremely fortunate to have obtained his service and commitment. I remember like it was yesterday when Dr. Cabana was superintendent at Parchman and I was a correctional officer. Don was a legend and an icon to our profession."

In the 1980s, Cabana supervised executions of two men convicted of capital murder, Edward Earl Johnson and Connie Ray Evans.

In his memoir, "Death At Midnight: The Confessions of an Executioner," Cabana recounted his experiences with death row inmates and how he came to oppose the death penalty. In the book's preface, Cabana wrote that he spent most of his career as a prison administrator convinced of the need for capital punishment.

"I had always been something of a bureaucratic utopian, fully committed to the notion that if the government d eemed capital punishment necessary then it must be so.... Not until I was confronted with supervising and carrying out the ultimate retribution did I begin to question the process in earnest.

"The execution of Edward Earl Johnson served as a milestone, an event at which to pause and wonder. But it was the execution of Connie Ray Evans that became, for me, a personal moment of truth," Cabana wrote.

Cabana said he and Evans had become friends during the inmate's years on death row. Cabana said in his book that he went as far to ask the governor to commute Evans' death sentence, which was denied.

Cabana said he "violated my cardinal rule never to get close to your clients," allowing himself to befriend Evans, who was put to death for killing a convenience store clerk in 1981.

A BBC documentary in 1987, "Fourteen Days in May," followed the two weeks leading up to the Johnson's execution, including Cabana's role as warden.

In testimony before a Minnesota le gislative committee in 1995, Cabana said: "However we do it, in the name of justice, in the name of law and order, in the name of retribution, you . . . do not have the right to ask me, or any prison official, to bloody my hands with an innocent person's blood.... If we wrongfully incarcerate somebody, we can correct that wrong. But if we execute an innocent person by mistake, what is it we're supposed to say - 'Oops'?"

Cabana later wrote "The History of Capital Punishment in Mississippi," which outlined the change from one method of execution to another: public hanging, electric chair, gas chamber and lethal injection.

Survivors include his wife, Miriam; three sons, three daughters, six grandchildren and a brother.

I just read sone if your posts here, Angela. I want you to know that I remember your dad fondly. We worked together and became friends. Don was definitely one of a kind. I read his book as soon as he published it. Most of it I had already heard from him a few times. I still pick up the book from time to time and thumb through and remember. May God bless you! - Linda Hart Whittington

I know I'm late offering my condolences. I was a graduate student of Dr. Cabana's for both my MS and PhD programs at USM in the early 2000's. He was supportive and inspirational. He was my favorite professor. I've thought about him many times over the years and what he taught me. I loved hearing his stories about his time as a warden, the good and the bad. He made me really think about things and I'll always love him for that. Recently, my 15 year old son found the book he wrote in my bookcase and asked about it. It brought out a lot of good memories as I told him about Dr. Cabana. I miss him a lot and keep his family in my prayers.

I´m a school teacher in Texas and I often watch documentaries. I stumbled upon the documentary of an inmate name Edward Johnson and the story was so touching yet sad. I applaud Mr. Cabana for his efforts, his bravery, and his ability to see & treat everyone as human. Mr. Cabana was a right, just, and fair man.

It's been a long time since I have written here. Funny how things change, life continues along as if you and mama were still here. Yet, there is such a huge void in our lives. I want to pick up the phone and call you both--tell you about the most beautiful baby. Ask your advice on life and as a new mom. Cry with you bout Bubba. So many things that I will never be able to share with you. God I miss y'all. Still every minute of every day. That will never change. Luv you more than words could ever say

Where do I start? The last year has been a year to remember and a year to forget. One year ago today my family's lives changed forever. We said good bye to one of the strongest most compassionate person we all knew. My daddy. I remember thinking when I was younger how much I never wanted to say goodbye to either one of my parents, I couldn't imagine life without either one. Now, within one year we are having to pick up the pieces and try to live life after having to say goodbye to both my mama and my daddy. Very difficult when our two best friends are gone. I live with no regrets, I only wish I could have had one more day. One more day to laugh together, one more day to cry together. One more day of just being with each other. To my dearest daddy, I love you so much!! I know now what you and mama meant when you said you felt like an orphan. That is exactly how I feel. I miss seeing you and mama everyday, even if it was just to make sure you were okay. I miss cooking for you and mama and having you teach me your recipes. It doesn't seem like a year since I was able to hold your hand, kiss your forehead and tell you how much I love you. I take comfort in knowing that you are not hurting anymore. No more pain daddy. I know that you and mama are having a blast together. Watching your children and grandchildren grow up to be the people you always knew we could be. I know the best is yet to come. I know that i will be reunited with you and mama one day. I think about you and mama at least a thousand times a day. You and mama will always live on in our thoughts, our actions, and our words to one another. ILYMTTY LTT

Words can't express how I feel about Dr. Cabana. I first met him at Parchman and then again at USM. He guided me through my academic journey and then gave myself and my wife a job after I graduated.

While, at Harrison County, I expressed to him that I was going to get my Masters and he told me to do it.

I called him sometime in 2011,and told him that I had finished and to thank him. However, he was busy and told his assistant that I could use his name anytime and to congraduate me.

After, finishing up with two additional certificate's I wanted to meet with him for lunch and talk with him about learning to teach CJ.

Sadly, I found he was gone. This brought me too my knee's because I had considered him to be alway's there when I needed him. I spoke of him throughout, my academic's and had other academic leaders read his points of view. I will give my entire future to trying to make him proud of me.

To his family he loved you all very much and I will honor him for life. Thank you, for sharing him with the world and especially Mississippi.

Our prayers are with you alway's and forever. My church is across from Highland and going in and coming out of church my eyes search for him and I smile and thank God for him and you all.

Sincerely,

Clifton Dale Ealey, M.S.

Father's Day. I never thought this could get any harder. I miss my dad so very much. Everyday I keep looking for him to come walk in the door. I keep waiting. I know my dad is in Heaven waiting on my mom, who will soon be joined with him again. I have no words to describe the sorrow I still feel everyday, especially now on Fathers Day. We are now having to say goodbye to my mama who has lost her battle with leukemia. The only comfort we have is that she will not be by herself. My dad is with her waiting to be together for eternity. I love you both so very much!!! Always remembered and never forgotten.

It's been eight months since I have gotten to see or talk to my dad. Everyone says you learn how to deal with losing someone, but I am not so sure. I miss my dad terribly everyday. In one week I have one of my hardest birthdays ever. Not because of what age I will be, but because it was my dad and my mom who made those days special. I will miss my birthday dinner made special by dad. I love you daddy more than words could ever describe.

Easter without my dad is just not Easter. My father had the ability to make all of the holidays great ones. This year my mom is stuck in the hospital, once again, and we will only have memories of my father. We will tell great stories, laugh, and probably cry together. None of us will say it, but we will all know it will never be the same without my dad. I miss you daddy so very much!! I love you more than words could ever say. I love you, Happy Easter!!

It's been six months today since I got to hug, touch, or just know that my dad was there. There are no words to describe how much we all miss our dad. I think about him every minute of everyday. I think about all of the things I want to tell him and get his words of wisdom on. I miss his laugh, his hugs, his cooking...everything. I miss you everyday dad, you took a part of my heart with you when you left. As Jackson would say...I love you too so much!!!

I never met Don Cabana, but after watching 14 days in May and then reading Don's book. I am rethinking my stance on capital punishment. My cousin was murdered over the summer. He was also anti death penalty. It was reading Don's book that gave me the courage to ask the DA to take the death penalty off the table. To honour the wishes of my cousin on this issue, rather than ask the state of Texas to be a tool of my need for vengeance.

To family of Mr. Donald Cabana. Please accept my sincere condolences for you loss of Mr. Donald Cabana. Sometimes words aren't enough to get through the death of a loved one. That's why it is a must to draw comfort from each other as family and friends.- Colossians 3:14 says: Clothe yourselves with love for it is a perfect bond of union. May that bond comfort you all and bring peace to your families.

I light another candle tonight in honor of my dad as we celebrate the Boston Red Sox winning the World Series. It's like they won for him. There is not a moment that goes by that I don't miss my dad, but i know he is watching over us. I know that he is with my mom as she fights Leukemia in Jackson now. As I told her the day she was diagnosed, she has the best guardian angel anyone could ever ask for. Happy Birthday daddy, this one is for you!!

I'm saddened to hear of Don Cabana's passing and I regret I did not write to him while he was alive, to express my gratitude. His work enlarged my views and added a perspective I would not have understood, had he not spoken out.
I've always been opposed to the death penalty in principle. Yet, I hadn't thought about how, In particular, when society to assigns a fellow human being to carry out a killing, this act places an unbearable burden on that person.
I'd like to relay a story about the film interview - I hope his family will read this and that, in this way, I can also express gratitude for their support of his work and life.
Many years ago, our campus human rights group (Amnesty International) hosted a speaker, who showed part of the documentary with the interview of Don. There was a "Q and A" session afterward. And then it was time for the theater to empty. But no one moved. There were no more questions, but everyone stayed exactly as they were - silent. I've rarely experienced such a profound moment that stretched on and on. It was as though everyone was just absolutely caught up in the message and had to honor and absorb it. Don's honesty in relaying his own experience is an example we all will carry in our hearts.

There are no words to describe how we feel. I have lost my best friend, my mentor, my father. I am blessed to be able to say this great man was my dad. There are so many things my father taught us over the years, so much wisdom to soak up that even we took for granted. I want to thank my dad for teaching me about compassion towards others, unconditional love, and true family values. I am blessed that my father has left such a wonderful legacy for all to enjoy and look upon for guidance, even in his absence. I am truly blessed to have been chosen to be one of my fathers daughters. I believe my father is with each one of us everyday. He was truly the greatest man I have ever known. There was only one Don Cabana. I had the privilege of calling him daddy. I love you daddy more than any words will describe. I miss you but I know I will see you again. Love Always and Forever

Dear Cabana Family,

We will all miss your loved one (Dr. Cabana). He has touched so many of our lives. I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from this amazing human being. He sparked my interest in corrections with his exciting stories from the field. His sense of humor and ability to connect with almost everyone he met was incredible. He used his experiences with the death penalty to educate us all about the topic and managed to change quite a few minds in the process. It was a pleasure having him as a professor at USM. I am also immensely grateful for his guidance, encouragement and continued support over the years. My students and I were thrilled beyond belief when he came to speak to us (at Troy University) about his book and the death penalty. They still talk about it to this day. We are all saddened to hear about his death. He was an inspiration to us all and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with you all.

I will continue to pray for Miriam and your children..for as much as you meant to me and my girls I cannot imagine the pain that they are feeling. I will always remember the good times back in college with you, me and michael with indepth discussions about life. I will also remember when I would be making tough decisions in my life and I would call you for advice, and somehow you always knew the right words to say and let me know I was doing what was right. When I see you in heaven I will have to remember all the questions I will have saved up til I see you again. You will me missed by so many, and as for me in the girls you we will always carry you close to our hearts..

Always,
Deb and the girls (Kari, Hannah, Hunter Rose and Hope, Haleigh)...

I met Don at the Jackson County Youth Court in the early 70's. It was always a pleasure to be in his company.

We all feel very honored to have gotten to know Dr. Cabana during his time here at the Tradition campus. He was a dear man and we always enjoyed his lively conversations. He never failed to talk about his family in every conversation. May you all find peace and comfort in the coming days.

Don Cabana was one of the finest men I ever knew! He was a great teacher at USM and a good friend. Prayers for his family!
