Seventeen people are dead, including at least 14 students, after a gunman opened fire Wed., Feb. 14, at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, according to the Miami Herald and the Sun-Sentinel.

“It’s a day that you pray every day when you get up that you will never have to see,” Broward County Public Schools superintendent Robert Runcie told WSVN Channel 7. “I ask the community for prayers and their support for the children and their families.”

Profiles of the victims have been published at the Sun-Sentinel and the Miami Herald. They are:

Alyssa Alhadeff, a 15-year-old freshman
Scott Beigel, a geography teacher
Martin Duque, a 14-year-old freshman
Nicholas Dworet, a 17-year-old senior swim team captain
Aaron Feis, an assistant football coach
Jaime Guttenberg, a 14-year-old dancer
Chris Hixon, the school's athletic director
Luke Hoyer, a 15-year-old student

People around the nation voiced their grief and condolences.

"It’s sad that these tragedies happen in our country," said Parkland Mayor Christine Hunschofsky. "We have many, many parents out here."

“As a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School,” tweeted Philadelphia Flyers hockey player Shayne Gostisbehere, “I am extremely saddened by the horrific news from yesterday and with a heavy heart, my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected.”

Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, also a Stoneman Douglas alum, tweeted: “I hope in this darkest of times back home… we can find love. You’re all in my prayers.”

President Donald Trump addressed the nation’s children from the White House Thursday: “If you need help, turn to a teacher, a family member, a local police officer or a faith leader. Answer hate with love. Answer cruelty with kindness.”

We invite you to share condolences for the victims in our Guest Book.

We are coming up on the 6th anniversary of our precious loved ones on February 14, 2024. I can tell you that not a day goes by without thinking of those precious souls. Valentines Day has a whole different meaning to us. I’m sure the same feeling is also in your thoughts for that unimaginable day in 2018. Who would have imagined that your loved one would not return home, but instead was taken away in such a horrible and unthinkable manner! I followed the trial and after hearing all the stories about every loved one, I feel like I knew something special about each person. You all should be very proud on how you handled your feelings and that your son, daughter, or husband will NEVER be forgotten. God Bless!❤

I feel so saddened and angry however I can only imagine the depth of your pain! I have so much sympathy and empathy for all of the families and want all of them to know how many so -called strangers feel deeply for your loss and will never forget you! My son was a basketball coach at Douglas for two years on an extended temporary basis. He loved every day of his time with the Eagles. My other son is a teacher in Coral Springs. This just as likely could have happened at his school. Lastly, my eldest is son is a US Marine war Veteran and he is deeply saddened as well. He kmows first hand the devastation of these weapons. All of our hearts are with you and we will stand with you! You are definitely in our thoughts! God bless all . We applaud your strength and wish you peace.

MY HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS HIGH SCHOOL.

IT SEEMS SO UNFAIR THAT DEATH SHOULD HAVE THE POWER TO TAKE AWAY SOMEONE YOU LOVE. AND WHEN IT HAPPENS, THE THOUGHT OF NEVER AGAIN BEING ABLE TO TALK TO, LAUGH WITH OR SIMPLY HOLD THEIR HAND CAN BE MOST DIFFICULT TO BEAR.

MAY YOU ALWAYS KEEP TREASURED MEMORIES OF YOUR DEAR LOVE ONES IN YOUR HEART. AND MAY YOU ALSO FIND COMFORT IN KNOWING THAT THOSE WHO HAVE PASSED ON IN DEATH GOD KEEPS IN HIS MEMORY BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL PRECIOUS IN HIS EYES. (PSALMS 116;15)

RESPECTFULLY YOURS,

God Bless all the families that are dealing with this horror and the whole Parkland community. I grew up in the area and am extremely grief stricken for this close knit small city, of many wonderful family oriented people. Words can not describe what you must be going through. I wish you strength, love and hope.

Many people move to Parkland for the schools and family oriented community to give their children a better life, Knowing these are families who truly are involved and care, this must be especially painful for you. Children should never have to be buried by parents, let's also never forget the brave staff that stood in front of a bullet to protect these children.

Thank God,many of the surviving students have opportunity and resources to make a change, They are now using in the best possible way, to come together for action making the whole country proud.

I could not be prouder for their strength, intelligence, and selflessness.Thank you, Stay strong.

We will never forget these victims or this tragedy and am so very, very, sorry for your heartbreak.

"Candles"
In Remembrance of Valentine's Day, 2018
Written by a Fellow High School Student

Little candles in the night
Your little flames once shone so bright;
Warmth and joy and hope brought you
To all of those you loved and knew.
Though here your light no longer shines,
Your flames live on in hearts and minds.

No fear had you for waters' rush,
Or even for the winter's hush.
You passed the tests and beat the best,
You soared high over all the rest.
Your future shone so bright and clear,
Your dreams and wishes seemed so near.

Yet one day came when darkness won,
And cast a shadow on your sun.
Your flame was lost when came a flash
That seemed to turn your life to ash;
But even that could never stop
Your little light still set on top.

Little candles once standing tall,
What great darkness made thee fall?
Your lovely light once glowed so bright;
Your sweet aroma filled the night.
Though you may never here return,
May your flame forever burn.

For those of us who here remain,
May we never lose their name.
We must rise and stand and fight,
And always seek to do what's right.
Though time will make their memory dim,
Our lights must always shine for them.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear Families & Friends of this terrible tragedy: Sending the deepest of condolences from the bottom of my heart. God sees your tears and feels your pain. Throw all your anxiety on the Lord because he cares for you. He can and will rectify all wrongs done on earth. He promises to wipe out every tear from our eyes, death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry or pain be anymore. Jesus is going to bring back those in God's memory back to life when all the wicked are removed from the earth. Families will then be reunited and live in peace and happiness as God originally purposed. What a marvelous time that will be! Meanwhile we must stick together and support each other during these mournful times. Love and prayers to you all.
