Jerry Pittenger Obituary

Pittenger Jerry L Pittenger. In loving memory of Jerry L Pittenger, March 30, 1947-January 2, 2014. A resident of Powell, Ohio, Jerry passed away peacefully at home with devoted family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Jerry was born and raised in Shelby, Ohio. He graduated from Shelby High School and continued on to receive a BS degree at Miami University and a MS degree at Ohio State University. Jerry spent his professional career of 37 years at Battelle Memorial Institute. He was an Eagle Scout and a 50 year member of the American Radio Relay League. He was born to the late Russell D. Pittenger and Marcella (Jane) Pittenger and was the loyal husband of 45 years to Deborah K. (Johnston) Pittenger. Jerry will be forever remembered by sister, Pamela J. Pittenger Hall (Danny) of Tucson, Arizona; two beloved daughters, Abigail L. Pittenger of Delaware, Ohio, Shawna L. Ulicne and husband, Michael G. of Powell, Ohio; and two especially treasured grand children, Michael A. Ulicne and Alexis B. Ulicne; along with several dear nieces and nephews and countless loyal Amateur Radio friends. Jerry loved being with his family and close friends. His passion in life was designing and building amateur radio equipment. That passion led to developing an enjoyable retirement business making Morse Code Keyers. He will be remembered with smiles as a kind, generous, loyal and focused husband, father and friend. A Celebration of Life and Open House will be announced at a later date. Family wants to thank the Vitas Hospice Organization for their kindness and assistance. Arrangements by O. R. WOODYARD NORTHWEST CHAPEL.

Deb, I just learned of Jerry's passing. I'm sorry.

Jerry and I became best friends and roommates at MIami University. We shared great experiences as we learned and developed at Oxford. I'll never forget him.

My wife Beverly Thomas and I wish you and your family all the best.

I knew Jerry but a short time. His craftsmanship will be missed. My Morse Code key he made is the only fine art that I own.

We just heard today about Jerry. We will miss him at Emerald Isle teasing me about malted milk balls. He was a lot of fun at Balderdash too. I am glad we had the opportunity to get to know him. He will be missed.

It was so sad to hear the news and yet he is resting now and in no more pain. The faithfulness of you and your family has provided him a lifeline of hope for a resurrection into a peaceful, beautiful new earth. Sharing this and living it was the best gift you could have ever given him.

I had the privilege of working with Jerry on numerous projects and teaming efforts throughout the last 20 years prior to his retirement. In all my years of work, my times with Jerry stand out as some of the most enjoyable times of all. His wisdom, humor, and integrity resonate through my memory as a shining beacon to what work is all about. Debbie and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you!

Jerry and I were closer that either of us had realized. After working together in the transportation profession for a few years, Jerry and I both found out later that his dad and my dad were Shelby High School friends and it was Jerry's dad that had introduced my parents to each other when he set up a blind date for my parents.

Jerry was a very kind person. One of my many fond memories was when he helped me find a needed radio part then refused payment for it. Helping others is what Hams do was Jerry's comment. Rest in Peace Jerry. You leave behind many hams who adored you and your wonderful approach to life.

I can only say that we have lost an really great guy. Both of us being ham radio operators meant we had something in common that we both loved. But Jerry was an amazing person beyond his radio talents. Kind and thoughtful and he helped me and many others, many times with my radio problems. I will miss him greatly. R.I.P. my friend......

Jerry took me under his wing at Battelle in the late 1970's and would "wordsmith" my reports to make them better. He gave me encouragement, shared knowledge, and was full of life. The last time I saw him was at a Bruce Davis celebration at Battelle (shortly before Bruce passed). Jerry, being the kind generous person he was, funded a lot of the expenses for this large gathering. I am not sure how relevant this is now, but I have K8RA engraved in my mind from his short wave hobbies.
