AGE: 86 • Howell

Marvin (Marty) Duskin, of Howell, New Jersey, a retired journalist whose career spanned half a century, died on Monday, November 7, 2016, at Brandy Wine Senior Living Center in Howell, New Jersey. He was 86. Mr. Duskin, known in his youth as "Butch" and thereafter as Marty, enjoyed 50 years in newspaper and broadcast journalism starting with sports coverage as a high school teenager. Afterward, his work enveloped reporting, writing, editing and producing news of all kinds. He was employed by the Staten Island Advance, Star Ledger of Newark, and Jersey Journal of Jersey City before joining WCBS radio in 1970, following introduction of the then-developing all-news format by the CBS flagship station in New York City. He served as executive producer until his retirement in 1995. During his career, he won awards from media and service organizations in New Jersey and New York.

Mr. Duskin was a former president of the Hudson County Newspaper Guild in Jersey City and a life member of the Writer Guild of America in New York. He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., where he graduated from Curtis High School in 1947 and Wagner College in 1951. At Wagner, he became editor of the school newspaper, the Wagnerian. He served eight years in the Staten Island Armory unit of the National Guard, being honorably discharged in 1956 with the rank of sergeant first class. He was a member of Aquehonga Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons. In 1952, Mr. Duskin received the degree of Master of Science in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in Manhattan. He and the former Bernice Dansky were married in Staten Island in 1957, and resided in West New York before moving to Howell, where they were volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth County. Their son George died in an auto accident in 1999. Mrs. Duskin died in 2012. Mr. Duskin loved animals, especially dogs, which were a big part of his life. He was a vegetarian.

A Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at Beth Israel Cemetery located at US Highway 1 North Woodbridge, New Jersey 07095. Interment will be in Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ.

Marty Duskin was one of the most effective producers ever at WCBS Newsradio 880...this because of a combination of his extreme intelligence and gentle approach with reporters. I am devastated to learn that he has died...Those were the days, dear Marty- reporters went to the max to come thru for Marty... he was one of a kind. A dear soul that brought out the very best in all of us.
