Harold Hillyer

1923 - 2017

GLOUSTER - Harold E. Hillyer, 93, of Sebring, Ohio, formerly of Grove City, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring after a short illness. Born a twin on Dec. 24, 1923, in Trimble Twp., Athens County, Ohio, he was the son of the late Joseph and Beatrice Phillips Hillyer.
After high school, he spent time in Montana at a CCC camp, as a cowboy and truck driver. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he saw much action serving in Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa and Japan.
Most of his working life was spent as a truck driver for the Sohio Corp. and Refiners Transport. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Free Masons, serving twice as worshipful master of Capital City Lodge 656. He also was a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite and a member of the Columbus Shrine.
Harold was a lifelong member of Grove City Methodist Church. Harold enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing with his General Motors retiree friends; but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by four sons, James (Connie) Hillyer of Alliance, Harold Gary (Florence) Hillyer of Plain City, David Hillyer of Sebring, and Mark (Tyra) Hillyer of Mechanicstown; a sister, Mardell Campbell of Nelsonville; sisters-in-law, Pat (Gilbert) Hillyer of Lakewood, Wash., and Norma Brown Pallo of Redtown; grandchildren, Jennifer Cook, Heidi (Frank) Salierno, Jessica Hillyer, Josh Hillyer and Justin Hillyer; great-grandchildren, Cody Cook, Leonard Cook, Elijah Salierno, Luca Salierno, Giovanni Salierno and Marlee Majewski.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen Brown Hillyer, whom he married on March 2, 1946. She passed away April 15, 2013. Brothers, Howard and Jack Hillyer; and a sister, Pat Wagner.
A Masonic service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday June 27, with the funeral service immediately following at Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville 6525 S. Route 78, Glouster, OH 45732, with Rick Seiter officiating. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster, where there will be a military graveside service conducted by the United States Marine Corps and the Combined Color Guard Unit.
