Gary helped me when I saw struggling. He cut my hair with great care and attention to detail. I still remember him as a great person.

I knew Gary from elementary school through high school, in Tonawanda, New York. I have fond memories of the summers back in the 70's that I spent with Gary and our friend Gregg. I was always impressed by how at ease he was with everyone and the many friendships he made. My condolences to the Baxter family.

I think of you often with gratitude for the positive impact you made in our lives. I will always remember your kindness and ability to cut to the heart of a matter. I hope you are at peace, and hope you know how grateful I am for the time you were here with us. We will love you always.

October 9, 2013

It's been almost two years since you left us, yet it seems just yesterday we were all at Cow Tippers eating and laughing . Some of us have tried to move on with our lives but you remain in our thoughts and prayers. We may never understand why this all happened but i do believe that someday we will all be together again. I had the opportunity to visit the tree your friends have planted for you at the park and Gary you would love it. You touched so many people in various ways and while you may not be here with us physically you are certainly with us emotionally. We love and miss you Gary.
We'll never forget you,

"Back in the day" I had the privilege of having Gary as my hair stylist. It was always such a pleasure to walk into the salon knowing Gary would be there with his winning smile to make my day all better. I always waited too long between cuts and when I would walk in the door he would greet me cheerily with, "There's my little hippie!" I still call myself that today when my hair gets too long. I eventually moved to the northern suburbs but got back into town on several occasions for Gary's special touch and Gary was my immediate choice to give my daughter her first haircut in 1994. She is now in college and working in Buckhead so I told her we needed to look up Gary so she could visit him. I knew he would greet her with a huge smile and warm hug. After Googling his name, I found this guest book. Two years after his passing, I sit here just heartbroken. He was such a kind, warm, funny person. I know he is greatly missed every day by all who knew him. My prayers go out to all his family and friends. Here's one last hug to you, Gary. I look forward to seeing you again one day.

Gary, It's been almost a year since you left us and it has been rough.I can't tell you how often we all think and talk about you, but i'm sure you already know this.Heard a song today , about holes in the floor of heaven, and how you can look down on us, so i know you see how many people love and miss you. We're all just being a little selfish but we know you went for a reason ,whether we understand it now or not . We will all be together again and what a happy bunch we'll be. My son introduced me to one of the finest , upstanding men i ever had the priviledge to meet.We all miss you . Love, Brad & Sharon Philbrook

I moved back home to Memphis about six years ago. I had lost contact with Gary. I just went to his Facebook page and read that he had passed away. Although we haven't spoken in years, he has held a very special place in my heart. My deepest sympathy for his loss. I owned a tanning salon on Peachtree next to the hair salon where he worked. Then we worked next door to each other on Piedmont. He was such a joy to see every day. I feel privileged to have called him my friend.

It is with a heavy heart that I just received the news. Gary was a friend and someone I felt comfotable telling anything to. He had a knack for making people around him feel comfortable and he sincerely cared about your well being. I'll miss him greatly. My condolences to his family, Glendy and Amber.

October 18, 2011

Gary was one of those rare special people who make everyone around them feel special, too. I'll bet that each one of his clients secretly believed that he or she was Gary's favorite, because that is how Gary treated us all. He asked us about our lives, remembered all our stories, encouraged us through difficult times, and truly cared about us. In addition to losing my stylist, I have lost a counselor, a coach, and most importantly -- my friend. Gary, every time you finished giving me highlights in my hair, we laughed together and said I'd been kissed again by sunshine. But the truth is, during our time together, I'd been gifted with the sunshine of your spirit. Gary, I miss you already, and I hope so much that your spirit is flying free.

Gary was one of the sweetest people I've ever known. It's difficult to believe that he's no longer with us -- a beautiful human being. He cared about others and about doing the 'right thing.' I always felt I was in the presence of someone with real integrity. I'm fortunate to have known him & I will miss him.

I am so very sad as I sit to type these words. Such a beautiful soul and wonderful friend. His smile and warm personality was such a welcomed gift each and everytime we ran into each other. No matter how long it had been since we had last seen each other, it was the same wonderful encounter as the one before. You will be forever missed, cherished and loved here on earth...and rest assured handsome, YOU can never be replaced. They broke the mold when they made you.

Gary came into my life at the most important time. He taught me how to stand back up after some very hard times. He taught me that life could be filled with happiness and friends again when I couldn't see the master plan. I still don't see the master plan and I'm not sure what comes next, but I will take the lessons that I learned from watching you and move forward with them knowing that knowing Gary made me better. He made everyone feel special, like he was giving them extra attention. He gave the best hugs and always had encouraging words. He was a bright light in my life; in many of our lives and sometimes extra bright lights burn out too quickly. It is my hope that Gary's family is comforted in the fact that his beautiful soul had purpose and still does. I want to thank each of them for sharing him with me and allowing him to touch my life and heart. I'll miss you Gary, I already do. I love you.
