Family-Placed Death Notice

ROBERT STEPHEN PAINTER Robert Stephen Painter, 85, died on July 18, 2007. He was born on July 6, 1922 in Atlanta, GA to the late William C. Painter and Ruby Anchors Painter. He was a graduate of Tech High School and attended Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia where he studied music theory under Hugh Hodgson and piano under Mike McDowell. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. While at the University of Georgia, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy for training as an Aviation Radioman, receiving that designation after training at Pensacola and Jacksonville, Florida. He later served in Millington, Tennessee as a petty officer and instructor. After approximately three years of service, he was discharged. Several years later, he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Military Intelligence Reserve. He returned to Atlanta and was employed by the Maryland Casualty Company while attending the University of Georgia, Atlanta Division. He received a B.S. Degree in Marketing in 1948. He was later appointed Manager of the Bond Department of Maryland Casualty Company, working in South Carolina and Georgia. He later joined Bullard and Mitchell Realty to head their insurance department. Bob later formed a local insurance agency, R.S. Painter & Company with offices in the Glenn Building in Atlanta. Subsequently he moved to Tucker, Georgia and founded the Frontier Insurance Agency with which he was associated until his retirement. Bob and Mary Frances Duke of Memphis, Tennessee were married in 1945 while he was in the Navy. They later lived in Atlanta, Columbia, SC; Tucker, Stone Mountain, Lilburn and Monroe, Georgia. He was a member of Bethabara Baptist Church, formerly being a member of Moreland Avenue, Tucker and Smoke Rose Baptist Churches. He was an Emeritus member of Grant Park Masonic Lodge and a Scottish Rite Mason. He was a Shriner at Yarrab Temple, a member of the Directors Staff and played the Caliope in the famous parades around Georgia. Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Duke Painter, three daughters, Kathleen Painter Kemp of Monroe; Frances Painter Stone of Conyers; and Ann Painter Jackson (Ray) of Grayson, seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Aukes (Brian) of Monroe, Stephen Dickinson (Cyndi) of Jefferson, Diane Cox of Monroe, Brittany Stone and Courtney Stone of Conyers, Wesley Jackson (Brandy) of Dacula, Natalie Kitchens (Bryon) of Statham; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother William C. Painter, Jr. (Betty) of Decatur. Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 20, 2007 at 11:00 AM at Ward's Stone Mountain Chapel with Reverend Rob Bray and Herb Woodard officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, from 5-8 at Horis A. Ward Funeral Home, Stone Mountain Chapel, 1355 Rockbridge Rd., Stone Mountain, (770)381-5722.
