Lois Houck Obituary

Published by Bakersfield Californian on Oct. 10, 2010.
Lois K. Houck (Krauter) 1920 - 2010 Lois K. Houck was born December 5, 1920 in Bucyrus, Ohio. She grew up with her seven siblings in Arvin, CA graduating from Kern Union High School in 1938. She passed away after a short hospital stay in Bakersfield on October 3, 2010. She studied fashion in Los Angeles and was a designer before marrying Bill Houck on April 28, 1945. They raised five sons while living in Ohio, California and Nevada. They returned to Kern County in 1970. She is survived by her husband, William J. (Bill); sons, Douglas, James, Harry, Andrew and WDan; 2 brothers and 3 sisters; 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was a dedicated Christian, wonderful wife, mother, friend, seamstress and homemaker. She was active in every community she lived in with people, schools and churches through her generosity and sense of caring. Lois will be missed by many friends, most recently at Rosewood and The Oaks Community Church. WDan remembers of Mom: I was in my early teens getting ready for school one morning and spotted a guy in the park across the back lot in Rosamond. He was sitting at one of the picnic tables. I didn't understand why someone would be setting out there all on their own at that time in the morning. Mom told me to go and ask him if he wanted to have breakfast. He came over and mom served pancakes, eggs and bacon. He ate like it was the first meal he had in months. I remember three things particularly about that meal; the first being that she laid out the good china and napkins, the second was that she asked him to bless the meal, and last that she sat and the three of us ate together. The service for Lois is Friday, October 15, at 1:00 p.m., at The Oaks Community Church, 10200 Campus Park Drive, Bakersfield, CA. www.bakersfield.com/obits

I met Lois in Feb. 1995 when I started attending The Oaks church. I will dearly miss her. She was un-equaled in her heart for prayer, for missions and missionaries (i was am one of those that she cared for, prayed for and helped support). I will always remember how she stood up to the robber in their home as he pointed a gun at her and said,"We're Christians, and in the name of Jesus, I ask you to leave." And he did. The power of God in a dear woman yielded to Him.

I was truly sorry to hear of the loss of Lois. May our Lord comfort all of you in this time of sorrow. I knew her when I lived in Rosamond.

I am a the grandaughter of John Krauter. I remember Aunt Lois' grace and poise. I didn't know that she studied fashion or was a designer until reading her obituary, but I wasn't surprised to learn this about her. She was a lovely woman and always very kind to me.

I am sending my love to her family and friends.

While i don't remember Lois well (I'm a grandson of John Krauter), the story about serving food and laying out the best china reminds me of what i love so dearly about this family. We are always willing to help without judgment and with the utmost respect for others. We are family first and i will always appreciate that from Lois' generation. It makes me proud to be part of such a wonderful family and wish hers the best during these times.
