Dale Deem Obituary

Dale Eugene Deem, age 66, of Edmonds, WA, formerly of Sumas, passed away in Edmonds, Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015. He was born Feb. 20, 1949, in Abbotsford, BC, Canada, to parents Ted and Joyce (McConnell) Deem and was raised in Sumas. Dale graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in the Class of 1967. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a Specialist 4th Class. Dale worked numerous jobs including; Jerstedt Lumber in Lynden; police officer for the City of Sumas; forklift operator for Mountain View Lumber in Abbotsford, BC, and Socco Forrest Products in Sumas; cashier for Yorky's and Bromley's Market in Sumas. He retired in September 2012 after working two jobs for almost 30 years. When Dale wasn't working in recent years, he enjoyed going to the gun range with his friend Gary, going to the theater to watch new movies, loved animals and was an avid Seattle Mariners fan. In past years, he played softball, football, baseball, and enjoyed bowling and taking motorcycle rides. Dale was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather Joyce Grinsted (Cecil); father Ted Deem; sister, Roberta Cornies; brothers Dennis Deeter and Bruce Grinsted. He is survived by his daughter, Shannon Deem of Seattle; brothers, Barry Grinsted of Merritt, BC, Daryl Grinsted of Edmonton, AB, and Kevin Grinsted (Janet) of Yellowknife, NT; sister in-law Lynne Grinsted of Airdie, AB, and numerous nieces and nephews of the Grinsted and Jones families. A memorial service with military honors will be held Friday, Nov. 6, 2015, 1:00 PM at the Squalicum Boathouse, 2600 N. Harbor Loop Drive, Bellingham, WA 98225. I was totally shocked today to read about Dale! He was 5 months my senior, and I met him in 1989 when I was working at "Starvin' Sam's" in Sumas. He'd come into the store & chat...and most always leave me in stitches! I think he was the funniest person I ever met, and wish we'd had the opportunity throughout our lives to be more connected. I don't know if he'd feel the same way...but I know that I'd be better for it! Words can't express my sorrow for his passing...and my sympathy to the family.
