Darwin Atkin Obituary

Darwin R. Atkin passed away Jan. 7, 2014, at the age of 76. He was born Christmas Eve, 1937, in Porterville, Calif., to Carl and Myrna (McBride) Atkin. Darwin graduated from Porterville High School, Class of 1955, where he was active in FFA raising champion hogs.

While attending Porterville College, he met his future wife, Anna Bastady. Darwin graduated from Cal Poly Ponoma in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science in fruit production. While in college, he was a member of Alpha Zeta, a professional fraternity for the field of agriculture. During summer months of his college years, he worked for the United States Forest Service building trails in Mineral King. Upon graduation, he worked for the University of California Riverside as a Research Associate for the Botany and Plant Sciences Department. All the research was done through UC's Lindcove Field Station. He retired from the university after 35 years.

Darwin developed a passion for fly tying which led to many awards and accolades, including the Buz Buszek Fly Tying Award and Charlie Brooks Memorial Award. He was a lifetime member of the Federation of Fly Fishers and received Man of the Year in 1996. He also received the FFF's highest award, The Order of the Lapis Lazuli in 1998. The Headwater Fly Fishing Group honored Darwin as one of the Legends of the Headwater in 2007. Darwin enjoyed demonstrating fly tying techniques at regional and national conclaves. In 1990 he was the Master of Ceremonies at the opening of Fly Fair in Holland. He also participated in a fly tying tour in England sponsored by Partridge Hooks. Darwin developed and patented the Waste-Trol, a device for collecting debris while tying flies. He began framing fly plates for auction after teaching himself how to mat and frame. He spearheaded the idea of developing ""The Great American Fly Fishing Calendar,"" which was a collaborative effort of 12 fly tyers to raise money for the FFF. Darwin wrote several articles for Fly Fisher on how to tie his personal patterns. He was a contributing writer in Judith Dunham's Art of the Trout Fly and wrote a chapter on matting and framing in Mike Randechich's Tying the Classic Salmon Fly. Darwin was truly a character and a master of storytelling.

Darwin was preceded in death by this parents and brother, Robert, of Oregon. He is survived by his wife, Anna Atkin, Bozeman; daughter, Suzanne Atkin Landeros, Santa Rosa, Calif.; granddaughter, Katie (Derek) Gauntlett, Petaluma, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Bastady of Fresno, Calif.

The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Spinelli, Dr. Ritter, Kelcey, Mary, the Bozeman Deaconess Emergency Room, and Bridger Health Care.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Darwin's memory to International Federation of Fly Fishers, Darwin Atkin Memorial Award, 5237 US Highway S, Livingston, MT 59047; Bozeman Deaconess Foundation, 931 Highland, Bozeman, MT 59715, or Montana State University Libraries, The Trout and Salmonid Collection, P.O. First met Darwin while flyfishing on a small flyfishing only stream near Jack Flats above Springville Ca. in 1970. He knew where almost every fish in the stream were and even had some of them named that he had caught prior. The motto in those days was "Limit you kill don't kill your limit" which later permoted the "Catch and Release" mindset.
Darwin was a great guy, fly tyer and flyfisherman and will be missed by the flyfishing community.

I always enjoyed visiting with Darwin and Anna when they still lived in Porterville. He was always fun. A comfortable man to be around. His passing is a loss to all his friends and family.

While I have not been west and thus have not seen Darwin in a few years, I did draw a sense of friendship from knowing he was there and his loss is dearly felt.

I find comfort in the knowledge that if ever there was a man who was "bigger than life" it was Darwin. His kindness and wit touched thousands and his legacy will remain with us for all of our days.

I have one of the many fly plates Darwin made hanging in the living room of my fishing cabin in the Catskills. It is oft asked about and a cherished reminder of my friend.

Darwin was my mentor for learning to do fly plates. He taught me well. I spent time with him at his famed "Rooster Coop" in Porterville, California; and I enjoyed every minute of it. More importantly he was a dear friend to me. I will always remember him.

I think I first met Darwin at an FFF conclave in 1969 or 1970. I bought a framed set of streamers from him, and it has been on our library wall for 29 years. We recently bought property near Three Forks, and I wish I had known Darwin was in Bozeman - I thought he was in California. I would love to have seen both of you. 76 is much too young.

Darwin held " Black Belts" in fly tying, secret spots for fly fishing, urging others to do what is right, having Anna on his arm, and being so welcoming to "folks from away" like us.
We benefited from being with you!

Too many good memories to express them all. Our friend is gone, but those memories remain. He always was there to mentor me in fly tying as no other did. Fishing with him on his favorite waters. Visiting Darwin in the Rooster Coop and dinner with he and Anna. Travels to and from Montana. Darwin's influence on me with his love of the Federation and all things fly fishing. Good memories that will not be forgotten.

It was our pleasure to know this beautiful person with his quick smile, conversations and sharing stories at the "conclaves" of old. Your knowledge and talents will inspire and assist many more, sadly it will never be the same. We loved his stories even more when he got carried away laughing at his own joke. What a guy. You will be missed, oh great fisherman, but with your new connections, send a few big ones for us. Love, Mary and Ray Larson

I first met Darwin in the early ninties at the Amfac Hotel in Westchester California tying his famous sculpin fly when I was in my early twenties. Dear family, it was a shock for me hear about this ugly news. A very nice man has gone , a tying friend who visited the Fly Fair in The Netherlands years ago. Still have a couple of his beautiful flies framed which he was tying sitting close to the river the Ijssel out of his hands. A true Master. I wish you all the power with this sad message. A candle will burn for him here in my house. Happy trails my friend. Theo Bakelaar.
