Andrew Sinnickson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 15, 2017.

Andrew Hurty Sinnickson (Drew) died Saturday, January 7, 2017 in Annapolis, MD. He was born January 17, 1949 in Richmond, Virginia. He attended Collegiate School, Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, PA and the University of Richmond. Continuing his family's sailing heritage, he began sailing under his father's tutelage at Fishing Bay Yacht Club, Deltaville, VA. His grandfather, George R. Sinnickson of Philadelphia, and his great grand grandfather, Senator Henry F. Lippitt of Providence, RI, commissioned and raced several notable Herreshoff designs out of NYYC: WASP, TOBASCO, WINSOME, QUISSETTA and WEETAMOE. An accomplished sailor, Drew covered thousands of nautical miles from the Caribbean to Maine, Panama, West Coast and transatlantic passages. In his early days he raced Penguins, Mobacks, Jollys, Finns and participated in many handicap CCA, DELTA, IOR and MORC races. At age 15 he was helmsman aboard a 40' S&S yawl on his 1st significant offshore trip from Deltaville to Kennebunkport. Drew competed in numerous Newport/Bermuda, Annapolis/Bermuda, Marion/Bermuda, SORC, Key West & Antigua race weeks as well as other Chesapeake Bay racing events taking many top awards. In 1983, he moved to Annapolis to begin a career with the Department of Defense at the U.S. Naval Academy working with the USNA offshore fleet. He enjoyed the Midshipmen offshore summer training cruises, conducted seminars, and served as Watch Captain on the USNA AMERICAN PROMISE completing a transatlantic passage from UK to Annapolis. Drew's seamanship skills garnered the support and trust of Midshipmen and he took great pride in watching them become fine Naval & Marine Officers. In 1987, Drew married Sarah Wayt Lambeth of Richmond, VA. He and his family lived in Annapolis for 15 yrs until they moved to their residence on the West River in Galesville, MD. He was a member of The Cruising Club of America, Storm Trysail Club, Annapolis Yacht Club, Naval Academy Officer's Club, Fishing Bay Yacht Club, and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club & West River Sailing Club. Drew was predeceased by his father and his mother, Andrew and Suzanne Sinnickson. He is survived by his wife, Sarah; 2 daughters: Sarah Corter Walker (Alister) of Greenwich, CT and Anne Corter German (Kyle) of Annapolis; 2 sisters: Kenzie Sinnickson Hubard (Harrison) of Richmond, and Perry Sinnickson Guy (John) of Alexandria, VA; sister and brother-in-law Martha and Ben Harris of Mobile, AL. Also 3 grandchildren: Peter Richardson Awalt, McLain Randolph Awalt and Peyton Lambeth German; nephews: Harrison Hubard III, Carter Hubard, Carrington Guy, Claiborne Guy, Ben Harris III, and Wayt Harris; 10 great nieces and nephews and 2 Labrador Retriever children, Briar and Beau. With gratitude our family would like to acknowledge Dr. Aldo Iacono and his transplant team at the University of Maryland Medical Center for their exceptional care. A memorial service will be held at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Annapolis, MD on January 27th at 11:30 AM with a reception following at the Annapolis Yacht Club.

My dearest Drew--Thank you again for getting the cannon blank shells; the Hoppn' John party would not have been the same without you and without the cannon. Mercersburg--both my cousins went there and I just visited, on the way to looking at a horse. Wish I had known that. And I trust you and Bill are up there somewhere trading sailing and other CCA stories. And to Sarah and your family--my heart goes out to you. This is just not fair. What a gaping hole is left in our lives. In sadness, Collot

We didn't get to see Drew very often, but when we did, it was a real pleasure. A Virginia gentleman and a yachtsman of the first order!
He will be missed by so many.

Dear Sarah, and all your family: I am so thankful that I was able to meet Drew, even if it was in his last months. My heart goes out to all of you. I will never forget his call to me, thanking me for the "best pie he ever had." I am grateful for the conversations I had with him, especially on New Years Day, when he looked so wonderful! God bless you all

I grew up in Richmond next door to Drew and his family. He was the cutest little boy! And very successful in his adult life with sailing and his other pursuits. He will be greatly missed. Sally Guy Brown
