I loved my Aunt Mary dearly. It came as a surprise to me when I recently found her obituary. From a young age, she made a tremendous impression. She and Uncle John would stop by, usually on Christmas eve, and we all relished those visits. She would honestly critique my poetry and impromptu speeches. My condolences to Uncle John and Rita. I will miss that grand lady.

A fellow classmate of mine from Marillac made me aware of Mrs. Crawford's passing, and I just felt that I wanted to say how much of an impression she made on all of us girls. I will always be so grateful that she shared her biggest passion with us.
To this day before any client meeting or pitch, I am reminded from somewhere deep, that my passion and diction is key!
We will never forget you, Mrs. Crawford!

My sympathy and prayers go out to the Crawford family. I graduated from Marywood in 1964, and greatly enjoyed Mrs. Crawford's speech classes. She was so dynamic and interesting. I remember when a friend and I got a walk on part in "As You Like It." We attended every rehearsal and played our parts "well." After the performances were finished, she told us she wished she had given us bigger parts. It made us feel very good. God bless her for the influence she made on so many students at so many schools.

Marywood class of 1969, remember the field trip to New York city? The Broadway plays, South Pacific, Man of La Moncha...
Mrs. Crawford molded each and every one of our young lives teaching her speech and drama class in her unique style and class. We will always remember and admire you! God bless you Mrs. Crawford.

So sorry to hear about Mrs. Crawford's passing. she taught me at Marywood-1959-1963. She changed my life. She encouraged to get involved with theatre and open myself up . she was the reason I stayed at Marywood since i was the only one from my grade school to attend. I always felt alone in my freshman year but she made speech and drama a way to open up and fit in! What a classy lady!!! Renee Denicola Boehm

So sad to here this new. Mrs. Crawford was one of a kind. I learned so much from her at Marillac High School. I feel blessed to have had her in my life.

Deepest sympathy. I had Mrs. Crawford at Marywood for speech & drama. I remember her telling us freshmen about Maria Menichini (sp?) Callas who was appearing in Chicago. She urged us to go. Sadly, we were profound idiots who were more concerned about prom dates than hearing one of the greatest sopranos of all time. I will always regret I never saw Callas & picture Mrs. Crawford enjoying her concerts now. I bet they are big pals. I was in my first play at Marywood under Mrs. Crawford & many more. It was LOADS of fun & a great learning experience. God bless Mrs. Crawford.

This was a lady and a teacher one never forgot! Decades later I can still picture her standing at the lectern, with one ankle crossed over the other, trying to encourage our "inner Sarah Bernhardts" to burst forth. My heartfelt sympathy to her family.

Mrs. Crawford touched so many lives. We all have a wonderfully funny story to tell while in one of her classes. She made learning fun, got many of us to open up in front of an audience, and cared about each and every one of us. Thank you, John, for sharing her with us.

I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Crawford's passing - she was my drama teacher at Marywood HS in Evanston IL and I had the privilege to be in her production of "The Mouse that Roared" - she was terrific.
The world was a brighter place with her enthusiasm and flair.
We will keep her and her family in our thoughts and prayers.

Not only did I have "Miss Gavin" in grammar school at Queen of All Saints, but I had "Mrs. Crawford" at Marywood Highschool.

I can still visualize Mary Crawford from my freshman year at Marywood. In the first year of high school, she seemed to be such an imposing figure. With her ramrod straight carriage and, initially, she wore her blond hair pulled back in a bun, she certainly commanded our attention. In fact, I am straightening my posture now just thinking about how she would stop class and give a look whenever she saw anyone slouching. Every class began with these crazy vocal exercises as if we were in a professional oratory or acting class. She used these little “Crawfordisms”. For instance, if anyone ever said “hey”, she would respond, “Hay is only in a barn.” Anyone who yawned would be chastised with, “You are not breathing correctly. Stand up and breath from your diaphragm.” I thought she was so funny, but I didn't dare laugh. The intonation of her voice was so imperious. In the years to follow, I learned that her grand style was simply flair and grace. Although there was no way to tell from outward appearances, I could feel her affection. I am grateful for how she inspired my work as a high school speech and drama teacher.

Though she may have moved on, the memories she helped create in the lives of the thousands of young people she shared her love of theater with - and the many thousands more who were privileged to see the great plays she helped them stage - ensure that she will be with us all for a very long time. For having known her I am, indeed, a “Rich Man.” That said, I pity the gum chewer who is taking part in whatever production she's no doubt mounting somewhere now . . .

Mary Crawford at Marillac High School attended by our daughterr, Anita, is fondly remembered as teacher. We most enjoyed her acting performance as Lady Bracknell when she sang the song, "A Handbag is not a Proper Mother" in show adaptation of the play "Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde. She is in our thoughts and prayers. Lucia & Bill Seranko, Arlington Heights, Illinois
