CHARLES SMOOT Obituary

Charles H. Smoot, age 98, of Deephaven, MN, passed away on April 21, 2011. Preceded in death by sister Barbara Ross and brother William Smoot. Survived by wife Lucille (Lucy) Palm Smoot, daughter Judy Smoot Johnson, son Charles "Skip" Smoot, and daughter Leslie Smoot (Tom Perls), grandchildren Kakia and Alex Johnson, Katie, Charlie, and Jim Smoot, Hannah, Nick and Travis Perls, great-grandchildren Sam, Tom, and Luke, and many nieces and nephews. Charlie was born March 24, 1913, in South Orange, NJ and spent much of his childhood building things, reading, and sailing. He was educated at the Gunnery, Harvard, and Stevens Institute of Technology and spent his professional life as an engineer in research and development, retiring as Director of R&D at Rosemount Inc. His greatest loves were being with his extended family, sailing on Lake Michigan or Lake Superior, and flying a small airplane. His friends at Madeline Island will miss their ancient mariner. His family will miss the counselor, adventurer, storyteller, inventor and mischief-maker who helped us navigate life. There will be a private interment at Resurrection Mausoleum, Shorewood, MN, with a celebration of life at a later date. With gratitude to the Frauenshuh Cancer Center, NC Little Hospice staff and volunteers, and especially Dr. Martha Hageness and Dr. Mark Wilkowske. Memorials preferred to NC Little Hospice, the American Cancer Society, or the donor's choice.

To the extended family of Charles Smoot,
I am so sorry for your loss. Leslie Smoot is a dear friend of mine and I can now appreciate the origins of her great humor, compassion, humility and intellect. Her dad sounds like a rare gem that many of you were very lucky to have known.

Dearest Lucy,
I am so sad to have heard about Charlie's passing. Even though I never met him, I felt like I did, thanks to your many stories of his adventures and life. I miss your smiling face, and am grateful for the memories I hold of you at St. Therese, and how much you helped me in the office. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time, and always, dear Lucy. Take care my dear friend. God bless you and your family. Annette Kline

Dear Aunt Lucy, Skip, Judy and Leslie and all your families

I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Charlie's death.
His sharp mind, hilarious stories, and clear explanations of complex concepts always amazed me.

How lovely to have known someone who enjoyed his life and his family so much.

Much love,

Charlie was my father-in-law. Most importantly to me, he was my wife's dad. So much of Charlie showed up in Leslie and subsequently in our kids and yes, they are wonderful very important traits -honesty, being clear about and standing by your convictions, passion (his were sailing, flying and being exeptionally good at these things), and love without stipulations (his commitment to his wife Lucy and to his family could not be matched). Charlie was a great patriarch and a great example for us all. With all my love. Tom
