LUTHER PEYTON Obituary

LUTHER WAYNE PEYTON, 78, of Collierville, died Monday, September 23, 2013 at the Kirby Pines Nursing Home in Memphis following complications from a stroke this April. He leaves his daughter, Lisa Peyton Hamsley and her husband, both of Germantown; his daughter-in-law, Amy Peyton McLean and her husband, both of Indianapolis; three grandsons, George Peyton (18), Peyton Hamsley (17), and Harry Peyton (16) as well as two sisters and a brother. Born September 20, 1935 in Boyle, MS and raised in Greenville, the first of five children to Luther Alvin and Mary Earline (Harrison) Peyton. Wayne was a Memphian for 30 years. For the past 18 years, he resided in Collierville, Tennessee. Wayne joined the U.S. Marines following high school graduation in 1954. He served for three years and later attended Mississippi State University - home of his Bulldogs. Wayne met his wife of 45 years, Linda Carolyn Phillips Peyton in 1959, and they were married in 1960. They had two children: Ronald Wayne Peyton and Lisa Carolyn Peyton. He and Linda would later be blessed with three wonderful grandsons they spoiled at every opportunity. Since moving to Collierville, they had been members of Collierville First Baptist Church. During the 70’s and early 80’s, Wayne was a popular bank vice-president and manager at the Fox Meadows Memphis Bank and Trust. Wayne never met a stranger and readily dispensed both sage financial advice along with good stories and tall tales. In his later years, he worked with First Tennessee prior to his retirement in 2000. An avid football fan, Wayne always rooted for his Mississippi State Bulldogs. More recently he avidly cheered both his Indianapolis grandsons’ Cathedral “Fighting Irish” and his Germantown grandson’s Briarcrest Saints of which his namesake is an offensive lineman. Wayne was a voracious reader, and he was known to stay up all night with a good spy novel or L’Amour western. He also was an accomplished grill master and never missed an opportunity to showcase his feats of grilling expertise for family and friends. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m., with a funeral service and celebration of life planned for 2:30 p.m., Friday, September 27 at Memorial Park in Memphis, with burial in the family plot next to his devoted wife, Linda and his beloved son of 38 years, Ron. In lieu of flowers, please make a gift to either Cathedral High School of Indianapolis or Briarcrest Christian High School in memory of Luther Wayne Peyton.
