A real police officer is expected to put his/her life on the line at any moment. Without hesitation or delay. A real police officer is expected to play by the rules and to live a certain way. To be honest, to be a sportsman, to play fair and mainly to encourage others, by example.

I am told this young man put himself in the line of fire instinctively, to save another person. This is what a real policeman is all about. I have also heard, and read, that no greater love hath no man than he who would lay his life down for another.

I served with the Memphis Police Department for over 21 years. I met many who were like this young man.
To call another officer a "partner," means you have complete trust in the man or woman you serve your tour with in the field. They are your back up in times of trouble. They are the ones with a friendly joke or project to work on. They are the ones who lend a nonjudgmental ear to, the ones who lend a shoulder to weep on. They are the ones who will comfort your family when things go terribly wrong. Next to any other human being on this planet...they ( your "partner") mean the most.

The by words of the Memphis Police Department are Knowledge, Courage, and Integrity. I firmly believe "Eddie" had these.
And yes, I firmly believe I would have been proud to simply call him....Partner.

It is not hard to see how many lives that you touched in your short, young life, Eddie. All you had to do was peer down into the standing room only packed church today to see all who were there to say their good-bys. You were a bright, shining star and the world is much dimmer without you in it. No one who knew you left you without memories to hold close to their hearts. I know out of you and your two brothers, I have the most funny memories of you. Dancing, ad-libbing in puppets, harassing the girls as only a goofy brother would do. Too many to share here. Of course, Michael, falling asleep each week in CYO will always be up there with the top memories of the McDonald brothers. Fly high, sweet angel. Make everyone in Heaven smile.
