Steven Buckingham Obituary
Memphis, TN
Dr. Steve Buckingham, a man who disliked frivolous euphemisms, passed away on November 24, 2015. Among his many accomplishments as a doctor, I wish to extol his lesser-known achievements. Steve flossed his teeth daily; he did not put Q-tips into his ear canal; he filed the family taxes in a timely manner; he used his blinker when driving, although he was less observant of speed limits; Steve always ate breakfast (Raisin Bran Crunch, black coffee), respecting the most important meal of the day. He will be remembered by his sly, sideways smile as he asked snarky questions, proving a point with not only the residents at LeBonheur but also with his children at home. His knowledge of medicine was rivaled only by his uncanny ability to reference esoteric movies and music in every situation; his bedside manner surpassed only by his dry wit and corny jokes. Steve was not only a giant in the Memphis pediatric infectious disease world, he had impressive plans for the future. He was going to reach a PhD in American colonial history, he was going to be an actor, he was going to be a star, he was going to shake his ass on the hood of Whitesnake's car. If you wish to honor Dr. Buckingham's memory, drink good coffee, read important books, spend time outside on walks and in the garden, listen to music, tell your wife how hot she is, eat leftovers on Sunday afternoons, attend school-sanctioned events for your kids, watch sports with friends, and, if you so desire, donate to the American Heart Association or LeBonheur Children's Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m..on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. A reception will follow the service.

I am deeply saddened for your loss. I worked with Steve for almost 5 years at LeBonheur. Whenever I asked about his children, he would always have pictures to show. He was a wonderful colleague and friend.

What a great honor and privilege it has been to work with Steve as our medical director. He was always so supportive of our team. We will miss his wit, his bright blue eyes, and the memories of our lunch meetings at Café Eclectic. We greatly respect his commitment to his wife and family and those frequent family vacations. He knew what was important in life. What an amazing legacy he left for all who knew him. We miss you, Steve.

Believe it or not, I heard about Dr. Buckingham in Facebook way up in Iowa. I want to express my condolences to his family. While this is obviously a sad time for you, I think it speaks well of the doctor that he would be remembered in such a light hearted way, and for his family to allow such an obit to be printed. I hope there will be a healthy dose of laughter whenever you remember him.

I first met Steve when I substituted for Jan Sherman in one of her graduate seminars and I envied her the interaction with this remarkable student. So, I was more than happy to accept Steve's invitation to join his Ph.D. committee this fall. Steve more than lived up to his reputation as a brilliant scholar. I am sorry that we will not have the opportunity to finish this academic journey. I extend my sincere and heartfelt sympathy to Steve's family, friends and colleagues, and I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

I was the advisor for Steve's prize-winning MA thesis in history at the University of Memphis, and I was serving as chair of his ongoing PhD committee as well. Since we first started working together several years ago, I was amazed at his effortless ability to master disparate subjects. (Early on, he told me, half-jokingly, that he had intellectual ADD.) I guess I will always associate Steve with being outside under blue skies, because that's where we would typically hold our meetings, which typically stretched on for pleasant hours, with neither of us checking our watches. He was truly a 'natural,' and he had such a sly sense of humor too, with those twinkling blue eyes. It's very hard for me to express the loss I feel, because I was looking forward to knowing him for many, many years to come -- not just as a student, but as a friend. My heart goes out to Vanessa, Amber, Kyle, and especially Ashley, who showed me the meaning of courage when she called to tell me the sad news soon after he had passed away. I am confident that I also speak for my colleagues in saying that Steve will long be missed, but always remembered very fondly.

I just read this online from Austin Texas. I hope the good doctor gets to shake it for the Lord, and I do believe that his obit will make him a star. Great obituary Ashley! I believe you may have some of your father's traits. I am glad I got to know Esteve. That is the way he used to say his name in Spanish. He left us too soon. I wanted to hear about his experiences as a history teacher/professor. But most importantly I wanted to see him holding his grandchildren.

Your obituary for Steve was truly remarkable and it made me recall a memory. I had asked him to speak on behalf of a vaccine and he replied, "I am not interested, but I know a really hot pediatrician who would be great." His humor caught me off guard but I so admired his obvious love and respect for you, Vanessa. Steve loved his children and I saw him frequently at soccer and baseball through the years at SFA. Brilliantly done, Ashley. You capture your father perfectly. I absolutely love your inclusion of the phrase, "a man who disliked frivolous euphemisms" in the first line, just before your use of the euphemism "passed away".
