Aunt Marlyn and girls,
I tried to send this message last week but apparently it got lost in cyber space. Aunt Veronica, mom and I send our sincere sympathy to you. We know what a great void you now have in your lives. He was a strong personality and so full of life. I think of us all when we were so young and the great times we had as a family, enjoying the times when the family from Ct came to visit Il. We all enjoyed seeing him at Diane's when we were visiting. All our love.

Yvonne, I didn't find out until today that your father has passed away. I couldn't be more sad that the "Painless Dentist" is gone. It will be very hard to drive past his office and know that he's no longer there. Doc had his hands in my mouth on a regular basis for about 40 years (which meant a lot of the conversations were one sided--he had an unfair advantage!). I'll miss all those late afternoon visits and his great friendship. A lot of wisdom, humor and kindness was handed out in that office, along with the dentistry. It was Doc that insisted I get a lawyer before I signed a book contract and it was one of the best pieces of advice I ever got. Doc was a great man and a great friend and I think that everyone that went to his office looked forward to their visits--how many dentists can claim that? The dentistry was painless, his passing is not.

Uncle Dick was a great guy. I always admired him and even though we didn't get together much over the years, I will miss him. He was always kind to me and my family. I know firsthand he was a good dentist as well. I know his family will miss him even more. With admiration and my sincerest condolences.

To all the people who have commented on here, I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks. I think I speak for everyone in our family when I say it is a very difficult time and reading these comments coming in from so many different people is comforting. From patients who have been seeing him for over 40 years, to friends from the Chilli Cook offs, to golfing partners, to friends from when we were little, to family members we just don't see enough of. I am very fortunate to have been able to get back to CT to see my Dad laid to rest, and I thank God for the time we got to spend with him in March. God was very gracious and merciful in His timing, and while my heart aches, I have found the peace that surpasses all understanding, resting in the promises of my Lord Jesus Christ. I look forward to the day when we are reunited. Thank you all again,

So sorry to hear of Dr. Dowlings passing. I can remember attending Birdseye school many years ago and on my way home from school I would have a dentist appointment at his office on Woodend Rd. In those days my parents did not have dental insurance and what I remember most was that my dad would come to pick me up and giving the doctor a payment of probably about ten dollars. I guess Dr. Dowling understood that not all families could afford to have their teeth fixed but I know my dad was grateful for the way he could pay the bill. My prayers are with you and your family.

We were surprised and very saddened to learn that Doc has left us. He was a grand fellow who brought great warmth and merriment to all of us who were fortunate to have been around him. He was one of those wonderful people who kept us chili cooks coming out more for the camaraderie than for the competition, and he will be sorely missed. Our prayers go out to the family at this time of sorrow. May God give you comfort and keep you well.

We were so sorry to hear about Doc's passing. We will miss his smiling face and gracious attitude. He was a great guy and friend and good chili cook. We were looking foreward to seeing him this June at the Delaware Valley Cookoff in NJ but we will now have to leave an empty seat at the bar. But we'll raise a toast to a wonderful friend and chili cook. "See you Doc". God Bless.

It was a sad day when I heard of Doc's passing. He was a super guy to be around. The Doc will be greatly missed at chili contests, which not only gave him a lot of pleasure, but also the other cooks to have Doc there as a good friend and great competitor.

Kim, Yvonne, Nancy, Diane:
I really wish I could be with you all this weekend to tell you in person what a great guy your Dad was. In too many small ways to list here, he had a significant influence in my life growing up. I spent many, many hours in his company and I learned quite a bit from the way he carried himself and his "life lesson" stories. If I can use a well-worn phrase, he was one "cool cat."
It goes without saying that the way he treated my Dad and cared for him and my family during my father's illness will be remembered by my family forever.
I did make it a point to introduce my kids to Dick during the few times our paths crossed in Stratford. As I'm sure your own children realize, mine know that your father was regarded as a good man.
Anyhow, I'm sorry I couldn't be there to see you and tell you in person what I think of Dick. Know that the Liptaks of Buffalo are thinking good thoughts about you guys today.

I will miss you deeply but I will be ok dad because I know I will feel you watching over me and you will continue to guide me. You gave so much of yourself that I am proud to walk in you footsteps. To the family of Doc and especially his daughter Yvonne, my deepest sympathy. I made many trips to his office for dental work, from walking up the steep stairs on Woodend Rd. to his last office. When ever I would call, he knew there was a problem. He would always be there to help me out. He was my dentist but he was also my friend and a gentleman. God bless him.

We send our deepest sympathy in the loss of your Dad. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
May you see God's light on the path ahead
When the road you walk is dark.
May you always hear,
Even in your hour of sorrow,
The gentle singing of the lark.
When times are hard may hardness
Never turn your heart to stone,
May you always remember
when the shadows fall—
You do not walk alone.
