Joseph Horowitz Obituary

Joseph L. Horowitz
Joseph Lewis Horowitz, 94, formerly of Trumbull and Southbury, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Gilcrist Hospice Care Center. He was the husband of Sylvia (Fleischer) Eisenberg Horowitz.
Joe grew up in Bridgeport, the son of the late Abraham and Fannie (Narvis) Horowitz. He graduated from Harding High School and Yale University during the War, and then obtained his medical degree from New York Medical College through the GI bill. Joe was an obstetrician-gynecologist in Bridgeport for over 35 years, including time as the Department Chair at Park City Hospital. He was a veteran of both the US Navy during WWII and the Air Force during the Korean conflict.
A true Renaissance man, Joe's passions included woodworking, sculpture, restoring Model A Fords, classical music, photography and researching figural tobacco jars (of which he became a world expert). He loved to run, bike and hike the Appalachian Trail. Over the last two decades, he wrote, designed, self-published and printed more than twenty books of original poetry, recipes, humor, his life and loves. Joe's autobiography, "A Good Run", was the metaphor of his life.
Joe is survived by his sons Robert Horowitz and his wife Catherine Nagel of Pelham, MA, and Justin Horowitz and his fiancee Kristin Judd of Ulster Park, NY; his daughters Debby Horowitz and her husband Jay Klemundt of Middlebury, and Ellen Horowitz and her husband Frank Vitale of Columbia Falls, MT; and his grandchildren Caribeth and Jeremy Klemundt, and Adam, Sarah and Emily Horowitz. He was predeceased by his former wife and the mother of his four children, Margit Kirschblum Horowitz; his longtime companion, Charlotte Tarses; and his brother, Paul Horowitz.
Arrangements – A graveside service will be held on Sunday June 18, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the B'nai Torah Cemetery, 250 Reid St., Fairfield. Shiva will be observed on Sunday evening at 7 pm at the home of his daughter Debby at 99 Bronson Drive in Middlebury. Memorial contributions may be made to the Maryland Food Bank, 2200 Halethorpe Farms Road, Baltimore, MD 21227; or the Connecticut Food Bank, 2 Research Parkway, Wallingford, CT 06492.

Dr.Horowitz was my Obstetrician and friend. I as an RN and worked at the Park City Hospital Obstetrical unit, of which Dr. Horowitz was the Chairman and Founder of that Department. We had many wonderful patients who we delivered together as a team. He was always kind and comforting to his patients, of which I was one of them.He delivered 2 of my 3 children. Dr.Joe was well respected by all.He will be missed by all who knew him. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. God Bless You, Dr Joe Horowitz

My dear cousins may Hashem comfort you amongst the other mourners of Zion. My Uncle Joe's personality would make the world smile! He always reminded me that he was the fist person to slap my twin brother and I on our rumps. He was our baby doctor and our Godfather. Be at peace Uncle Joe.

Debby and family. Very sorry for your loss. I had no idea the family relationship. I remember Dr. Horowitz when I worked at Park City Hospital. A very fine, kind gentleman.
