BENJAMIN MAHMOUD Obituary

Benjamin Mahmoud, 73, died June 2, 2009, in New Port Richey, Fla., of ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Born Oct. 6, 1935, in Charleston, W.Va., Ben attended Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston, W.Va. He received his higher education at the Columbus (Ohio) Art School and Ohio University, graduating in 1960. He spent two years teaching at La Universidad Interamerica in Puerto Rico. He taught two years at West Virginia State College. He joined the faculty of the Art Department at Northern Illinois University in 1965.
During his tenure at NIU, Ben was awarded many honors, including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. He had many exhibitions in Chicago; for almost 30 years he was with the Sonia Zaks Gallery. There were many university and museum shows of his work during his tenure at NIU. The university acknowledged Ben's achievements by awarding him a Presidential Research Professorship. When Ben retired in 1998, he held the title of distinguished research professor. A year after his retirement, Rockford (Ill.) Museum mounted a retrospective of Ben's work.
Shortly after his retirement, Ben moved to Florida and began to produce very different work from his previous paintings. He loved the outdoors, and the tropical nature of Florida inspired him to change his work.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela; his daughters, Kassandra Newman and Amanda Wolkowitz; and his son, Jeremy Knopow. Ben had two grandchildren, which gave him great joy.

Mt. Mahmoud was my art teacher at West Virginia State College and an excellent artist that I admired. He invited me to his home, too. When I heard of his death I called his son to say how much I admired him and how sorry I was for his loss. He was the best.

Hi Pam
I am sorry to hear about Ben, he was a very good teacher. I am one of the few African American students who stay in touch with him( I am the one who sent the calendar). He did have an impact on my life. I will keep you all in your all prayers

Hi Pam,
It broke my heart to hear about Ben's passing. He told me about your love story 5 years ago, during my son's party. I even sat next to you during a Harp concert in Music hall, at NIU. I am just glad you two found each other and at least spent some time together. I could tell how much he loved you. Keep that love alive in your heart and cherish the time you spent together. Most people live as a couple for decades, and do not experience what you two had. May he rest in peace and God give you the strenght.

Ben touched so many people in his all too short lifetime. He was a superbly talented artist and philosopher. His paintings often told complex stories. He shared his works with many of us. People of all ages will miss sharing his quick wit and complex thoughts. We are deeply saddened at his passing.

I was sorry to learn of Ben's passing - and especially sadden to learn that he had ALS. He was such a vibrant person and loved his art. I had him as an instructor for Visual Arts in 1967/68 - he was a great teacher and made learning about art fun. I knew him for many more years as I was the Benefits Adm. in HR at NIU for many years. He definitely left a lasting impression with me and will be missed by many.
