McKinley PHILLIPS Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Mr. McKinley 'Duke' Phillips Sr. went home surrounded by family and love ones to be with our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009.
He was born April 17, 1933, in Newport News, Va., and was educated in the Newport News Public School System. He then served in the U.S. Army where he received the Purple Heart Korean Service Medal w/2 Bronze Stars, the Occupational Medal (Germany), and The National Defense Service Medal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mrs. Pauline Jones-Phillips and Mr. Edgar Phillips; his sister, Catherine Anderson; and two brothers, Edward Phillips and Eugene Phillips.
McKinley was a member of the United House of Prayer for All People.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma McBride Phillips; three daughters, Judy Mitchell (Elder Ernest Mitchell) of Washington, D.C., Catherine A. Burrell (Raymond) of Hampton, and R. Lorraine King (Elder Eldeen King) of Long Island, N.Y.; four sons, Calvin McCargo (Sharon) of Maryland, McKinley R. Phillips Jr. of Hampton, Robert B. Phillips, and Darrell R. Phillips, both of Silver Spring, Md.; one sister, Linda Phillips of Hampton; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at the United House of Prayer for all People, 1811 Ivy Ave., Newport News. Viewing will be held at the church from 1 to 6 p.m. today. Interment, with military honors, will be 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Hampton Memorial Gardens .
