Daniel Jr. Channing W. Daniel Jr., 91, of Wilmington, North Carolina, died on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at his home in Plantation Village.

He was born on November 5, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Channing W. Daniel and Katharine V. Daniel. He was also preceded in death in 2004 by his wife of 58 years, Earlena Morton Daniel; and in 2010 by his brother, William V. Daniel.

He is survived by his daughters Elizabeth "Betsy" E. Daniel of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Katharine D. Blizzard and her husband, Brett, of Wilmington, North Carolina; his son, Channing W. Daniel III of Arlington, Virginia; his grandchildren, Katie Alexander and her husband, Chris, of Warsaw, North Carolina, and Chris Blizzard of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina; his great- grandson, Deaglan Steele Alexander; his sister, Helen D. Rodman of Charlottesville, Virginia; his brother, Peter V. Daniel and his wife Lydia of Lynchburg, Virginia; his sister-in-law, Lucy Daniel of Richmond, Virginia; and many devoted cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Chan graduated from the Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Virginia, and the University of Virginia, where he was a member of St. Elmo Hall, Delta Phi Fraternity. He received his graduate degree from the ABA Stonier Graduate School of Banking hosted by Rutgers University.

As a young man, he spent his summers as a counselor at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine.

He served in the Pacific Theater as a captain in the United States Army during World War II.

He was actively involved in the Episcopal Church. He was a member of St. John's Church in Wilmington, where he served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden. He sang in the choir and served as a lay reader and Eucharistic minister. He was a former member of St. Paul's Memorial Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he sang in the choir and served on the Vestry and as Junior Warden. For the Diocese of East Carolina, he served on the Commission on the Ministry, Budget and Finance Committees, and President of the Diocese of the East Carolina Foundation Inc. He was a lay delegate from the Diocese of East Carolina to the 1994 General Convention of the Episcopal Church.

From 1989 until 1994, he served the College of Preachers at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., where he was a member of the council, secretary, vice-chairman, and chairman.

From 1990 until 1991, he came out of retirement at the request of Bishop B. Sidney Sanders of the Diocese of East Carolina to serve as executive director of Trinity Center, the Diocesan Camp and Conference Facility.

From 1946 until 1952, he worked for Trailways Bus System in Wilmington, North Carolina, and as superintendent of maintenance for intercity busses in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Chan and his family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1952, where he worked as a sales engineer for the American Air Filter Company.

He returned with his family to Charlottesville in 1955 and began his banking career as trust officer at Citizens Bank and Trust Company. From 1964 until he retired in 1983, he worked for Jefferson Bankshares, where he was senior vice president and trust officer and a member and secretary of the board of directors.

Upon retiring in 1983, Chan and Earlena returned to Wilmington, where they watched their grandchildren grow up, and he pursued his life-long dream of sailing on Melody, his thirty-foot sloop. He was a member of the Wrightsville Beach Ocean Racing Association and was involved in organizing the first North Carolina Flotilla. In later life he was a member of the Blue Heron Yacht Club at Plantation Village, where he spent many Sunday afternoons sailing his remote control pond sailboat.

During his 29 years in Charlottesville, Chan was very active in the community. He was a member of the Rotary Club; a member of American Society of Automotive Engineers; President of the Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of the American Red Cross Chapter; Chairman of the Trust Committee of the Virginia Bankers Association; Chairman of Martha Jefferson Hospital, Inc.; and, President of the United Way. Upon retirement to Wilmington, he remained active in the community and served on the Board of Directors of the YMCA, where he was an avid swimmer, and as president of the Auxiliary at the Davis Community.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 11 a.m. Friday, September 24, 2010, with the Reverend Doctor Thomas C. Barnett officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church in Wilmington, the Wilmington YMCA, or to the charity of your choice.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Brett and Kathy Blizzard at 6631 Carmel Trail, Wilmington, North Carolina.

It was such a joy to Channing most days at the YMCA. I have worked with Channing on the FInance Committee and this news puts a large vacancy in the joy I felt seeing Channing and saying hello. I will miss seeing him in the halls or in the rocking chair. He is greatly missed. Watch over us Channing.
