Charles Zackariah Porter Jr. Charles Zackariah Porter Jr., 50, departed this earthly life on Monday, September 20, 2010, at his residence in Troy, Virginia.

Charles was born on July 6, 1960, in Charlottesville, Virginia, to Mrs. Shirley M. Porter of Troy and the late Charles Z. Porter Sr.

Affectionately known as "Zack" he was employed as a Steel Materials handler in Farmville, Virginia, until becoming disabled from a job related accident.

He was a graduate of Fluvanna County High School where he was a member of the BETA Club; the Chess Club and Track and Field team. Upon his graduation from high school, Zack enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country for four years and received an honorable discharge. Zack was a carefree and loving person. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, as well as helping others when needed. He was an avid crossword puzzle wiz who couldn't wait for the paper to come to tackle his new challenge. He learned how to crochet and ten penning. He enjoyed telling jokes and playing pranks.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Shirley M. Porter of Troy, Virginia; two children, Monique L. Porter and Christopher D. Porter Sr., both of Seattle, Washington; two brothers, Juan C. Porter of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Raymond A. Porter and his wife, Corporal Dionne, of New Castle, Florida; two sisters, Ms. Shawn L. Porter of Palmyra, Virginia, and Mrs. Valerie R. Porter of Mableton, Georgia; four grandchildren, Jonathan Wiggins, George Irby Jr. Christopher D. Porter Jr. and Mariah Porter, all of Seattle, Washington; three nephews; five nieces; one great-nephew; one great- niece; six uncles, Emmit Bullock, Errol G. Washington Sr. and his wife, Genevie, of Palmyra, Virginia, Douglas H. Washington and his wife, Pearl, of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, James C. Washington of Fork Union, Virginia, Robert Washington and Monroe Washington, both of Washington, D.C.; five aunts, Mrs. Arlene T. Perkins of Norfolk, Virginia, Mrs. Cora W. Hill of Fork Union, Virginia, Ms. Blanche W. Hill of Palmyra, Virginia, Ms. Lucy Price and Ms. Christine Davis, both of Washington, D.C.; two special cousins, Willie Hill Sr. and Mrs. Dequate Hill both of Troy, Virginia; a family friend, William E. Randolph of Kents Store, Virginia; and his pet companion, Chico; and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2010, at St. James Baptist Church in Palmyra, Virginia, with the Reverend Lloyd Martin officiating. Interment will follow at the Wood family cemetery.

A special thanks to the Fluvanna Rescue Squad, Fluvanna Sheriff's Department, EMTs and others who were there to help in our time of need.

Shirley and Family,
I was shocked to hear of Zack's passing when Raymond contacted me the other day.
May God's blessing be with the family. My prayers are with you all. I'm sorry that I can't be home for the services, but you are in the thoughts.
