David Hazelip Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Mar. 20 to Mar. 22, 2011.
David Leo Hazelip

David Leo Hazelip, 82, of Charlottesville, died on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

He was born on July 2, 1928, and grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1954, after completing his major seminary at St. Meinrad Benedictine Archabbey in Indiana, he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest. He served the Diocese of Louisville as a teacher and then as principal of Trinity High School.

In 1974, he completed his doctorate in education at Northwestern University. He then worked as Director of the Independent Study Program at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, where he met the love of his life, Barrie Jean Barrett.

David and Barrie were married in May, 1978. After nearly 33 years of marriage, they both considered themselves blessed to have found each other. They lived and worked in Chicago for ten years before moving to San Jose, California, for the next ten years, where Dave did drug and alcohol counseling. Charlottesville has been their home for 13 years. Dave loved Charlottesville's climate, culture, historical past, physical beauty, and the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A former smoker himself, he conducted smoking cessation seminars for Martha Jefferson Hospital and for companies in the area.

David enjoyed theater, classical music, movies, reading (especially history), gardening, all things Irish, and getting together with friends. He and Barrie traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, and he especially enjoyed their yearly stay in Mexico. Dave's favorite furry companion was his small terrier, Harry Potter, who will sorely miss his big friend.

David was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother, Mary Catherine, Margaret Ann, and Bill. He was a loving and beloved brother-in-law to Terry and Susan Barrett, Rorie Baker, Mariclare Barrett, and the Reverend Kevin Barrett, and a loving uncle to a niece, nine nephews, and ten grandnieces and nephews.

David donated his body to medical science. Memorial services will be held in a few weeks at Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, and in Louisville, Kentucky.

Memorial gifts may be made to the David Hazelip Scholarship Fund at Trinity High School in Louisville or to St. Meinrad Benedictine Archabbey in Indiana.k

Sorry to see the passing of maybe a family member, my name is also David Hazelip, my middle name is Kent. I was born and raised in Evansville, In. I now live in The Villages, Fl. The rest of my family are still in and around Evansville.

David Hazelip was my teacher, 1954-57; a better teacher I have never known. His love of learning was infectious. The buoyancy of his personality lifted us all to aspire to be better. When I became a teacher I would sometimes catch myself "doing a Hazelip" (as I thought of it): unintentionally imitating some gesture or some Socratic tactic of his. He was inimitable of course, but what a model to try to live up to! His legacy: a model, not only that of an inspirational teacher but also that of a life very well lived. Rest in peace, my mentor.

My condolence to David Hazelip's family. When I knew him at Trinity he was a very caring and humble teacher. He is truly one of the "old fashioned Rocks". He cared more about what he could do to help someone than what someone could do to help him. Wish they had more of him at Trinity now.
