George Gilbert Vest

George Gilbert Vest was born on March 16, 1920, to the late Oscar William and Beatrice Baker Vest in Nelson County, Virginia, and was called to rest on Wednesday, October 21, 2009, at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia, Virginia, at the age of 89.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Marie Brown Vest; a brother, Robert Louis Vest; and a sister, Maizie Cruzer.

He was a member of Mount Eagle Baptist Church in Nellysford, Virginia.

During his life he served in World War II, worked as a farm manager, worked at Morton Frozen Foods and was very instrumental to the development of the territory known as Wintergreen. He had a love for Wintergreen, for the land, the mountains, and the woods. He loved to hunt and fish. Because of his long-standing association with Wintergreen, he had long been acclaimed as "the man you ought to talk to if you want to know something about Wintergreen."

He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Zand G. Vest of Faber, Virginia; one daughter, Patsy V. Rainey and Lewis of Brodnax, Virginia; two granddaughters. Velona Smith of Brodnax, Virginia, and Shelandice Rainey and Antwaine of Lawrenceville, Virginia; two grandsons, Lewis Rainey of Brodnax, Virginia, and Everette Harris of Charlottesville, Virginia; five great-granddaughters, Aliesha Rainey, Reshawyna Walker, Zuri McCroy, Jasanti Rainey and Amyiah Marie Rainey; two great-grandsons, Jakarey and Tyekese Taylor; two sisters, Teolia Turner and Lorraine Harris; one brother, Ervin Harris; a devoted neighbor, Rebecca Drumgold; a devoted friend of the family, Mary Cowan; a devoted friend, Donald Faulkner.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, October 25, 2009, at the Mount Eagle Baptist Church in Nellysford, conducted by the Reverend Glenwood Morgan. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Lewis Funeral Home of Waynesboro is entrusted with the service.
