I was just discovered that Greg had died when I was looking up his and Joe Williams' book on style. I knew Greg as a wonderful teacher at the University of Chicago when I was in grad school in the 1980s. He taught me to love 18th century prose and to write clearly and concisely. My deepest condolences to his family.

To Sandra and Family. I just learned today of Greg's passing and wish to express my great sympathy for the loss of your husband and father. I worked for Greg when I was a grad student at the U of C, in 1983-1984, and he was not only a brilliant scholar and a gifted writer, but also a kind and compassionate boss. It was a privilege and a pleasure to both work for him and to learn from him.

Sandra,

I only learned yesterday of Greg's passing and it was sad news indeed. When I first arrived in Hyde Park to teach in the English department, the warmest and most generous welcome I received came from Greg. As I struggled that summer to remodel our little house on Blackstone, Greg would wander over countless times to lend a strong and knowledgeable hand. Without him, I might still be there trying to figure out the wiring of that old house. And you were very patient, I remember, on the nights he came home late from helping me out. I hadn't seen Greg for many years but I had always intended to find an occasion to tell him how well I still remember his generosity and friendship. It's very sad to me now that I never got the chance. I can only imagine the feelings you and your daughters have, especially coming now into the holiday season. You and Greg will be on my mind. I hope you will soon be as well as it feels right to be.

Greg was an inspiration to me for his accomplishment with stylistics and his demeanor. He is greatly missed. I pray to meet him again with Joe Williams at the big conference in the sky.

Greg inspired me with his wisdom, knowledge, and "tell it like it is" approach. Like many others, I've relied on his insightful understanding, shared in conversations at CCCCs meetings, for many years. I will miss him greatly. My sympathies to his family and friends.

Not only a consummate professional, Greg was a great colleague. I am permanently indebted to him for unstinting support as I became involved in the study and teaching of argumentation. I will miss his wit, high spirits, empathy, and good counsel.
