John Fisher Wright

John Fisher Wright, 94, of Charlottesville, died on Monday November 9, 2009, at a local care facility.

John was born in Madison, Wisconsin, on April 12, 1915, the only son of William Harmon Wright and Edna Fisher Wright. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Smith Wright, in 1985; and by his second wife, Elizabeth Landis Cullen Wright, in 2009. He was also preceded in death by his only sister, Mrs. Alice Wright Gee of Lexington, Kentucky, in 2003.

He is survived by his only son, William Harmon Wright, daughter-in-law, Joleen Laffin Wright, and granddaughter, Mary Allison Wright of La Quinta, California; by his stepsons, Richard L. Cullen, Frederick L. Cullen, Robert L. Cullen, and Edward B. Cullen, and by their wives and children.

John was graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Chemical Engineering in 1936 and spent his career with Exxon where he started in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He worked most of his career in New Jersey and New York City, but he also spent 12 years abroad - in Paris, France, Genoa and Rome, Italy, Abadan, Iran, and Brussells, Belgium. He came to Charlottesville in 1972 to retire and was active in the Olivet Presbyterian Church, Farmington Country Club, University of Virginia's Miller Center, the Thomas Jefferson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Beacon Club, the Oliver Turner Society, and the Albemarle County Electoral Board (of which he served as Chairman.) John was an enthusiastic supporter of University of Virginia athletics.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Fund of America, 322 8th Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, New York, 10001, or on the website http://www.a1zfdn.org.
