Roger Allan Inger of
Winchester, VA, 85, died November 21, 2025, after a brief illness. The most important things in the world to him were his faith, his family, and his golf game, and on any given day those could vary in order of importance.
Mr. Inger was born in Chicago, IL, and grew up in Los Angeles, CA. As a youth, Mr. Inger was both a scholar and a gifted athlete. He attended Hebrew school for many years, although eventually his family realized he had no intention of becoming a rabbi. He was also a gifted athlete, playing baseball and running track in high school. Mr. Inger also demonstrated his financial savvy in high school, secretly hitchhiking to school each day so that he could save his bus fare for coffee and cigarettes.
After graduating from high school in 1958, Mr. Inger skipped his tryout for the LA Dodgers, choosing instead to enlist in the United States Army, where he distinguished himself throughout his 11 years of service. He served one-year terms in both Korea and England, after which he attended Officer Candidate School, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant and eventually attaining the rank of Captain. While serving in England, Mr. Inger continued his athletic pursuits by taking up tennis, placing 2nd in the U.S. all armed forces tournament in Europe.
As a Green Beret in the Army Special Forces, Mr. Inger completed 2 tours in Vietnam. Mr. Inger also served with Army Intelligence and Security, receiving the Bronze Star for his leadership as the Chief Case Officer of an intelligence team near Duc Co. In addition to the Bronze Star, Mr. Inger was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Inger moved to Falls Church, VA, before settling in Warrenton, VA in 1971. He attended the University of Virginia, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1973 with a B.A. in History. That summer, after his graduation from UVA and prior to entering UVA Law, Mr. Inger assumed the post of commanding officer of the Fauquier National Guard. Mr. Inger graduated from University of Virginia School of Law in 1975, earning his J.D. Perhaps most importantly, it was while at UVA Law that Mr. Inger discovered golf, the sport which was to remain his lifelong passion.
Upon his graduation from law school, Mr. Inger became the Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Fauquier County, a position he held until 1986, when he switched sides and went into private practice as a criminal defense attorney. He moved his practice to Winchester in 1990, and practiced there for the remainder of his legal career, until his retirement in 2013.
Mr. Inger was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church, most recently as a member of Christchurch, Winchester, and serving on the vestries of St. James Episcopal Church, Warrenton, and St. Paul's on the Hill (Episcopal), Winchester, and on the bishop's Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia.
In August 2024, Mr. and Mrs. Inger moved to The Village at Orchard Ridge, where Mr. Inger developed many new friendships, enjoyed partaking in clubs and activities, and was the Keynote speaker in a ceremony honoring veterans.
Mr. Inger is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joan O'Malley Inger; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Jane Inger; and grandson and granddaughter-in-law Akira and Iryna and granddaughter Astrid, of Adelaide, Australia; daughter Marcia Inger of Austin, TX; daughter Jocelyn (Jolly) Inger and grandsons Max and Jude Fulmor of Round Rock, TX; stepdaughter and son-in-law Maureen O'Malley Butler and Jeff Butler of Clear Brook, VA; grandson Ryan of Clear Brook; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Aaron and Allison; great grandchildren Easton, Lawson, Brooks, and Blake, of Winchester; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Camden and Blair; great grandchildren Nell and Jack, of Murrells Inlet, SC; stepdaughter and son-in-law Colleen O'Malley Basinger and Scott Basinger; grandchildren Thomas and O'Malley, of Middleburg, VA; and brother and sister-in-law David Inger and Sandy Simmons of Santa Barbara, CA.
Services will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St, #405,
Winchester, VA 22601.
