Kathleen Powers Obituary

Kathleen Marie Powers July 7, 1955 -

March 13, 2012

We have lost our dear friend and family member, Kathy Powers, who died on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, following a long battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and patients. Kathy was a nurse practitioner who invested many years working for the Nephrology Department at the University of Virginia. Most recently, she saw patients through the University of Virginia Multi-Specialty Clinic at Augusta Health.

Kathy was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 7, 1955. She obtained her nursing degree from Boston City School of Nursing In 1977, and then came to the University of Virginia, where she earned her nurse practitioner degree in 1980. She worked for several years in the emergency room at the University of Virginia until joining the Renal Department, where she spent the majority of her career. Kathy loved her patients dearly and enjoyed seeing them in the clinic and while making rounds in the dialysis department. Kathy was one of those rarest of individuals who saw the world and all within it as deserving of her love, which she freely gave. She was an extremely generous soul, continuously giving of herself to all in need. Kathy cherished her family and her friends, and was happiest when surrounded by all at her farmhouse in Afton. She helped her siblings in raising her nephew, Jim; and her nieces, Britney and McKenzie. Unfortunately, Kathy suffered the tragic deaths of her youngest brother, John, to a motorcycle accident; and her sister, Corinne, to breast cancer. Kathy is survived by her partner, Jean; her daughter, Isabella; her stepson, Grant; her stepdaughter, Sarina and her husband, Michael; her grandson, Collin; her brothers, Jim and Mike; her sister, Janice; her aunt, Jackie; her nieces, Britney and McKenzie; her nephew, Jim; her great-nephew, Jaden; and one very special chocolate Labrador, Patch. Kathy's long struggle with cancer and her medical bills have put devastating financial stress on her family.

In lieu of flowers or other memorials, please consider making a donation to assist Kathy's beloved daughter, Isabella. Checks should be made to Isabella Powers, and mailed c/o Jean Wolfe-Powers, 3825 Coronado Circle, New Bury Park, CA 91320.

There will be a local memorial service held for Kathy at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012, at the Rockfish Presbyterian Church, 5016 Rockfish Valley Highway, Hwy. 151, Nellysford, Virginia.

Kathy was my step mom, and I feel so blessed to have made her a grandmother before she passed. She was amazingly loving and kind, and was such a wonderful influence on me. I will miss her presence on this earth, but I know she is in a better place.

Sadly, I did not know Kathy for nearly as long as I would have liked. But even in the time of a few short years it was easy to know her authentically kind and generous nature. I am blessed to have known her, as I am pleased that Jean and Isabella had the benefit of her most special love and adoration. I remember Jean, Grant, Sarina, and Isabella, along with Kathy's soul in my prayers.
To the family, I offer the quote I hang on to: Don't be dismayed at goodbyes; a farewell is necessary before we can meet again. And meeting again after moments or lifetimes is certain for those who are friends.

I met Kathy while working at the Kidney Center when she first came to Renal. She was the best NP and would always take time for the nurses too. She will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time. May God Bless you.

Kathy,

You will be truly missed! You were so special to me, you taught me so many things. How to swim, how to mow grass on a riding mower, how to tinker with tools, all while my mom was keeping house for you. Those things that I missed by not having my father around.

I love you and I miss you. You will always be in my heart.

Love,
Rusty

I knew Kathy for a very long time. I met her when I was an intern at UVA in 1990. She was a great person and a great nurse practitioner. She was a great friend, too. I will miss her and I am glad I knew her. Love to all. Margie

I have many good memories of Kathy. I met her when she first came to work at the Kidney Center at UVA. She was an awesome NP and was always very concerned about her patients. Even while fighting her own battle with cancer she still would always put her patients needs first. She loved her family and would sometimes bring Isabella with her (what a sweet girl. I pray for your family and for their comfort and peace right now. Kathy you will be missed.

Kathy worked with my Mom when she was on dialysis from 1988 - 1995. She not only made life better for my Mom while she was on dialysis, but for the family also. She was a very caring person who was devoted to her job and most of all to her patients. My prayers are with her family at this time.

So sorry for your loss. The world has lost a wonderful soul. I worked with Kathy for many years in the ER at U.Va. She was a wonderful clinician and a special human being. She has a terrific sense of humor and a special ability to make everyone feel better. She will be greatly missed.
