Luther Otis Umphlett

Luther Otis Umphlett, 94, formerly of Franklin, died on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at his home in Barboursville, Virginia.

Mr. Umphlett was born in Gates County and was the son of the late Lee O. and Annie Perry Umphlett. Retired from Union Camp Corporation after 33 years, he was a member of Franklin Congregational Christian Church and Post 73 of the American Legion. A veteran of World War II, he proudly served in the Pacific Theater with the United States Army Combat Engineer Corps. In addition, to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Edna Mason Umphlett; two brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are his daughters, Evelyn Mink and her husband, James, of Barboursville, Pamela Adams and her husband, Reginald, of Charlottesville, and Jacqueline Smith of Windsor; his brother, Millard Umphlett and his wife, Shirley, of Eure, North Carolina; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, January 11, 2010, at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, North Carolina, by the Reverend Lafayette Wilkins and Doctor Wayne Proctor. Burial will follow at the Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery in the Eure community.

Friends may join the family on Monday at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until time of services.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cool Spring Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 10, Eure, NC 27935; American Legion Post 73, Franklin, VA 23851; Franklin Congregational Christian Church Building Fund, Franklin, VA 23851; or to Eure Baptist Church Building Fund, Eure, NC 27935.
