Madeline Jones Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Oct. 3 to Oct. 4, 2010.
Madeline E. Jones

Madeline E. Jones, of Crozet, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 1, 2010, after a decade long battle with Parkinson's Disease.

She was born on June 6, 1925, in a coal mining town, Dunham, Kentucky, which later became known as Jenkins, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Cecil M. Elledge of Hayes, North Carolina, and Varina A. Elledge of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Ray B. Jones, and their three children, James R. Jones and his wife, Deborah B., of Crozet, and their children, Rachel, Jamey, Sarah, and Esther; a daughter, Deborah L. Jones of Crozet; and another son, Richard A. Jones and his wife, Faye, also of Crozet.

She is also survived by a nephew, John Elledge and his wife, Florence, of Afton, and many great-nieces and nephews including John Jr., Dennis, and Lisa.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Cecil M. Elledge Jr. of Gary, Indiana; and a sister, Vivian Gordon of Roanoke, Virginia.

She grew up in Jenkins, Kentucky, and later moved to Fairlawn, Virginia, where she completed high school and went on to Radford College for completion of an associate's degree in Business. Shortly thereafter she met her future husband, Ray, a student at Virginia Tech, at the time Ray was president of his fraternity, and Madeline became his sponsor, enjoying many social events there. She was his dance partner and became his life partner as they were married on December 30, 1950.

They moved to Covesville, then Petersburg, Virginia, and later to Albemarle County, where they settled to raise their family. She was employed for several years at Acme Visible Records in Crozet and later for over 20 years as a bookkeeper at Barnes Lumber Company. During that time, she was a long time member and past president of the Crozet Women's Club, and Crozet Moonlighter's Chapter of the Homemaker's Extension Club.

Madeline enjoyed nothing more than her family and celebrating her life with them. Special friends in her life included Chris and Art Baber formerly of Crozet, now of LaLuz, New Mexico.

She will be particularly remembered for her wonderful cooking and homemaking skills, a compassion for those in need, and her love and care for her family.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of caregivers that attended their loved one, Renee, Lisa, Leslie and Paula over the years. Many thanks also goes to Hospice of the Piedmont, in particular Marissa, and physician, Dr. Lily Hargrove of Crozet Family Medical Center.

Family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 188, Crozet, VA 22932, Crozet Fire Department, P.O. Box 696, Crozet, VA 22932 or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Family will receive friends at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel from 6 until 7 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 2010.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 8, 2010, at Mount Moriah Methodist Church in White Hall, Virginia, with reception following. The Reverend Chris McLain will officiate.

Anderson Funeral Home of Crozet is in charge of arrangements.
