Patricia Hart Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from Apr. 23 to Apr. 25, 2010.

Patricia Porterfield Hart

Patricia Porterfield Hart, born on August 30, 1935, in Bluefield, West Virginia, died on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.

She was the daughter of the late James K. and Margaret Phillippe Porterfield of Southport, North Carolina and formerly of Bluefield, West Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her wonderful son, Captain Randolph Porterfield Hart, who died October 9, 1995.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Raiford Hart Sr.; and two sons, Robert Raiford Hart Jr. and his wife, Sherry, and their children, Robert Raiford Hart III and Lindsay Segal Hart of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jesse Cannon Hart and his wife, Amy Michelle, and their daughter, Heather Michelle, of Palmyra. She is also survived by two brothers, James K. Porterfield Jr. of Columbia, South Carolina, and Jack. R. Porterfield of San Antonio, Texas.

Pat graduated from Beaver High School in Bluefield, West Virginia, in June, 1953. Pat chose to attend the School of Radiology Technology at St. Luke's Hospital in Bluefield, West Virginia. She then transferred to University of Virginia and passed the Virginia State Board for Registered Technologist - R.T. in Richmond, in 1956. For nine and a half years she was an X-Ray and Cobalt Technician for the University of Virginia Medical Center treating cancer patients.

Pat actually had three chosen professions during her lifetime. R.T. at the University of Virginia Medical Center for nine and a half years, an "at home mom" for 18 years (that profession she loved the most) and 20 years as Instructional Assistant with Preschool Handicapped Children with the Charlottesville City Schools.

She often commented her careers suited her personality. She loved her Cobalt patients, her children with special needs and her wonderful awe-inspiring family.

As a "Full-Time Mom" she was always active in the community, her Church, an active PTA "Mother", an active member of Charlottesville High School Athletic Booster's Club, Charlottesville High School String Orchestra Booster's Club and Charlottesville High School Band Booster's Club. She chaperoned many events throughout Virginia, Mystic, Connecticut, Orlando, Florida, St. Louis, Missouri and New Jersey. For 12 years she never missed a ball game or school event and her sons' participation in music, football, baseball, basketball, soccer and tennis. During this time she served on the President's Advisory Council at Longwood University 1983 until 1995. She was also elected "Outstanding Employee" by her faculty at Johnson Elementary School from 1993 until 1994.

Pat retired on July 1, 2000, and continued her theme in life "helping others", a theme that was dominant in her son, Randy's, life.

Friends may join the family from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 2010, at Beaver Dam Baptist Church on 250 East, with the Reverend Greg Wissinger officiating.

Burial will be Monday, April 26, 2010, at Ayden, North Carolina, Town Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the public is asked to consider a contribution to Beaver Dam Baptist Church in memory of Patricia Porterfield Hart.

Friends may send condolences to the family at www.hillandwood.com.
