Dr. Vito Anthony Perriello Jr.
Dr. Vito Anthony Perriello Jr., adored husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, colleague, friend and pediatrician, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009.
Vito had two lifelong passions - his beloved family and his beloved patients. After nearly four decades at Pediatric Associates and just four weeks of retirement, Dr. Perriello suffered a series of strokes before passing into God's hands.
Vito was born in Dunbar, West Virginia, in 1941, as the proud son of Rose Galzerano and Vito Anthony Perriello Sr. Upon graduation from Dunbar High School in 1958, Vito came to Charlottesville after earning a scholarship that gave him the chance to work his way through the University of Virginia where he was a member of the Jefferson Society, the Glee Club, the Newman Club, Chi Psi Fraternity, and the Raven Society. Despite beginning a lifelong, but often heartbreaking love affair with Cavalier sports, he moved on to Duke Medical School where he met and married Linda Gillooly. After medical school, he served his country in the United States Army as Chief of Pediatrics at Fort MacArther Hospital in San Pedro, California and was honorably discharged with the rank of Major.
In 1971, he moved back to Charlottesville, as a founding partner of Pediatrics Associates. Dr. Perriello's commitment to his patients did not end at the office door. He was known for taking calls late into the night, answering questions at sports events, and often getting health questions from kids well into their college years. For Vito, the chance to become a doctor was a gift, and he took ceaseless joy in returning that blessing through every person for whom he cared. By the end of his career, he was often caring for the third and fourth generation of his patients' families and loved seeing how he had touched their lives.
Throughout his distinguished pediatric career, Dr. Perriello developed an expertise in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as well as sports medicine. He was widely published and gave lectures around the country. He authored leading manuals for coaches on concussions and weight-loss in wrestling. For his work, he was awarded the Dr. Frank McCue III Sports Medicine Award and admission into the Virginia High School League Hall of Fame.
Vito was an active citizen embodying the Jeffersonian spirit of the renaissance man. He volunteered at the Charlottesville free clinic; redesigned the high school sports physical process; played the saxophone in the local jazz groups, the municipal band and each summer at Jazz Camp in Vermont; coached numerous little league teams for his children; volunteered for 36 years at Camp Seafarer as a camp doctor; and served as a team doctor for all the St. Anne's sports teams and the 2006 Mens' United States Lacrosse team to name a few. He also proudly served in leadership and board positions, including: the National Federation of State High School Associations - where he served as the Chair of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, the National Athletic Trainers' Association - where he was the physician director of the Board of Certification, the Virginia High School League - where he served as the Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee, United States Lacrosse Rules Committee, CASA, the National Wrestling Federation, Chi Psi Fraternity Corporation, and many other great organizations. Most recently he served as the moral anchor of the Perriello for Congress campaign.
Most of all, he loved spending time with his beloved extended family, perpetuating family traditions, and writing top ten lists or poems for every occasion. To those closest to him, he will always be known just as "V" - legendary father and larger than life grandfather. He was the man that allowed his children to each find their own calling and then help them answer it. He fit centuries of living into 68 years, and leaves behind a legacy of integrity and service that will continue to be felt in this community for a long time to come.
Dr. Perriello was predeceased by his parents, Rose and Vito and his in-laws, Tom and Reba Gillooly.
He is survived by Linda, his devoted wife of 43 years, and his four children, Elizabeth and her husband, Ken Rice, Vito III "Bo" and his wife, Maureen, Paige and her husband, Neeral Shah, and Tom. He lives on through his seven perfect grandchildren, Allison, Vito IV "Jake", William, Katherine, Caroline, Kelsey and Cadigan. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Louise; and his brother, Patrick Joseph and his wife, Norma, and a host of adoring nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors at St. Thomas Aquinas from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009.
A service to celebrate the life and legacy of Vito will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church . All are welcome.
Arrangements are being handled by Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Vito Perriello Foundation at the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation to honor his legacy. The fund will be used to promote his values and concern for the community he loved and to support his passions to which he gave so much of his time and talent. Contributions can be sent to CACF, P.O. Box 1767, Charlottesville, VA 22902 and should be clearly designated for the Dr. Vito A. Perriello Jr Fund.

Dear Linda, We lived on your block in the early seventies and Vito was the pediatrician for Jeffrey and Miriam Samuelson. (We lived next door to the Prices.) I was watching Tom on TV this evening and remember when he was a little boy. I looked up your family and found, sadly, that Vito had died. Jeff, who was ages 11 and 12, when we lived in Charlottesville, died 6 years ago at the age of 41 from a sudden heart attack. Miriam is a nurse in LA. You must be so proud of Tom and his achievements. I wish you and your family the very best..

Dr. Perriello was one of my all time favorite Drs. He always remembered the children even though they may only come in during well visits. When his son ran for office he got my vote because of his dad. My kids are grown now but I will always remember how we were treated by Dr. Perriello. God bless you and your family.

Vito was my colleague for almost ten years while I was a psychologist at Pediatric Associates. No person was "meant" to be a pediatrician more than Vito. That he had found his calling was evident every day of his professional life. What better life could a man have than to love and serve children . Vito loved his family, his patients, his friends and colleagues. And, he was loved by all of them in return.
My wife, Joan, and I hold the entire Perriello family in our prayers during this most difficult time.

I was so sadden to hear that Dr. Perriello had passed away. He was my doctor when I was little and he has been seeing my two boys since they were born (they are 5 and 6). It was always a pleasure to visit him and watch him interact with the boys. Ryan my youngest does NOT LIKE doctors and he would only see Dr. Perriello. He said that Dr. Perriello reminded him of PePaw ( PePaw died a few years ago) so it made me happy that he thought of Dr. Perriello in that manner. He will be greatly missed by all. He had a special knack with children. He would check their bellies and would always ask if they had spaghetti for lunch and sometimes they really did have noodles for lunch so they always looked amazed that Dr. Perriello knew what they had eaten. They would look at me as if to ask "how did he know what I had to eat"....anyway, please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

When our family thinks of "doctor," we think of Dr. Perriello (or Dr. Perri-purple, as we called him when our kids were little.) I took my son to the clinic when he was sick with minigitis, Dr. Perriello walked to the hospital for his office and met us in front and carried my son from the car to the floor and started treatment on him while I was admitting him. Dr. Perriello was my doctor as a child and later went on to care for both of my children. I can still hear his soothing, calming voice and remember him always telling my son, "I need to check those ears for bugs."
His kindness and concern for others will never be forgotten. I was so sad when I found out the news of his retirement, but then felt at ease to know that his daughter Paige would take his place...it was like we would still have a little piece of him with us.
Some time after his retirement, my son was seen at Pediatrics and we were so happy to see that Dr. Perriello was in the office and would be seeing us. I can still see his smile. He was a wonderful Doctor and will be missed by so many in this community. He touched so many lives in a way that will never be forgotten.

Vito Perriello gave all of us the gift of our children: in our case, he took us through birth, three broken arms, multiple bugs, ADD, IBS, and somewhere along the way, he helped us understand how to be good parents. Charlottesville lost not only one of it's finest Physicians on March 1st but also one of it's finest Citizens! Dr. Perriello treated both of our Sons from the day they were born up to the day He retired and made such a difference in their lives and we all loved him very much! My Sons would not switch Dr's even after they turned 18 (they are now 19 & 20)because they still wanted to see Dr. Perriello. I am 30 now and reflecting on the many years of encouragement by Dr. P. His word was the only word my Mother would value over her own mother when it came to mine and my brother's health. I met Dr. Perriello while I was standing in line to vote in Greene. I told him that "Tom" had my vote, his eyes beemed with pride. In just that five minutes of talking to him, I could tell that he was a wonderful person that loved his family tremendously.

Dr. Perriello was my doctor and i love him oh soo much! every holiday i would bring him a new tie cause i knew how he loved his ties and always had a different one on everytime i saw him. I will miss him very much. his family is in my prayers. Love you Dr. Perriello.

WHEN I HEARD ABOUT YOUR LOST TEARS CAME TO MY EYES. HE HAD HIS HANDS FULL WITH ME AS A CHILD. WHEN I WOULD FIND OUT A SHOT WOULD TAKE PLACE THAT DAY. I WOULD RUN THUR THE OFFICE MOM ON MY HEELS AND RUNNING RIGHT INTO DR. PERRIELLO. HE WOULD LAUGH PICK ME UP, AND TALK TO ME ABOUT WHY I NEED A SHOT AND LET ME KNOW THAT A STICKER WOULD BE WAITING FOR ME. WHEN MY VISIT WAS OVER I GOT THE STICKER AND MY PONYTAIL PULLED. Words can't explain my deepest sympathy, I enjoyed working with Dr. Perriello for many years. He always had a happy word and a great smile. He never went by me with out a joke of some type. He will never be forgotten in my heart and soul. Remember he is not gone, he will remain in our hearts. May God bless and keep the family stronger.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Perriello Family at this difficult time. I have known Vito for over 40 years having met him when both of us were first yearmen at Virginia, we lived in the same dorm and we graduated together in 1962. Through my visits to Charlottesville and through mutual friends, I have been able to follow Vito and his career. He was a remarkable person, a wonderful pediatrician, and clearly a great father and husband. Please know that although I cannot be in Charlottesville at this time, I will be thinking of you and remembering Vito.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Perriello's passing. He was my children doctor, and he was a great doctor. My family has fond memories of visiting his office. Sometime for good reasons. Sometime for minor sickness. Charlottesville was blessed to have a physician like Dr. Perriello.

Sincere condolences from our family and children cared for and nurtured by Dr. Periello. I called my 29 year old daughter, Sarah, yesterday with the news, and she cried in the middle of the Nashville Tennessee Post Office. We are sad to lose him, but better off having known him.

Dr. Perellio was a godsend to the medical field, he had such a calming spirit about him. From my daughter who is 34 with two daughters of her own, my 20 year down to my youngest who is 17, he cared for them from day one. He will be greatly missed. I was very sadden to hear of the passing of a great doctor and very caring man. He cared for both of my daughters with loving tenderness and often could bring a smile to their faces even when they were feeling sick. He never made a new mother feel silly for any question that I asked. He would answer with a smile and always tell me not to worry. Doctor you will be greatly missed

I am so sad to hear of Dr. Perriello's passing. I was a patient of his for 21 years and was far older than most of his patients. When I was 21, I had to get a physical, so I went to Dr. Perriello. After he did the physical, he said it was time for me to go across the street to the adult clinic. I took his hand and said “Okay, let's go.” He laughed, hugged me and walked me to the checkout area. He will be greatly missed and I consider myself fortunate that I had him as my doctor.

I was so saddened to hear of the loss of Dr. Perriello. I had the honor of working with him at Pediatric Associates, and he was always the kindest and sweetest person. I can't remember him having a bad day and always gave a kind word with a wonderful smile. He will be greatly missed by so many. I was so saddened to learn of Dr. Perriello's passing. He was such a caring and wonderful person who could always find "Potatoes" growing in my son's ears. He will always remember, as will our family how compassionate he was. Our children loved for him to squeeze their belly's and make that funny noise that only Dr. P would do.

My heart goes out to Dr. Perriello's family, friends, and co-workers. As a former assistant at Pediatrics, my mind instantly floats back to funny situations and life lessons learned over ten years ago. Dr. Perriello has made a wonderful impression on my life. He always made sure that I, as well as others, projected compassion, knowledge, and pride in ourselves as we faced those we came in contact with, not only in on the job but in everyday life. I will continue to use those practices daily with his words echoing somewhere in the back of my mind. My daughter is now 37 but she still remembers trying to bring her puppy into see the "baby doctor" her reasoning was if he could take care of her he could take care of a baby dog. He laugh as he tried to explain to a 3year old he could not. But he did give her a lollipop and everything was ok. The puppy recieve a lick. He will sorely be missed in an atmosphere of hurried time to the next patient. I am sadden by your lost. But take heart he will be missed but his legacy will live on.

Perriello family-I am sad to hear about the lost of Dr. Perriello. He was a great doctor and really knew how to make the children feel better if they came in the office for a sick visit. He saw my daughter a couple of times when she was sick. He would open the door and say what kind of bug might this little one have and she would smile and feel much better. Vito and I were classmates at Dunbar HIgh School. The memories I have of Vito are of a teenager growing up in Dunbar. I remember him as a very bright student who always had a smile to brighten the day. It has been many years since we last met. Our class celebrated at our 50th year reunion last October. He had plans to attend, but had to cancel at the last minute. My sincerest sympathies go out to the Perriello family in their loss. He will me missed by all who knew him.

I was deeply affected reading Dr. Perriello's biographical information today. Any one portion of this life story is amazing and wonderful; the fact that it all applies to one person is almost beyond comprehension. I only observed Dr. Perriello from a distance as my sons came and went through Pediatric Assoc. in the 1970's but even that was a blessing.

My name is Seth Rogers and Dr. Perriello was my doctor for 24 years, even though I was six to eight years older than the majority of the other patients. Whenever I went to the doctors office for check-ups, colds, ear infections etc. I wanted nothing to do with other doctor as nice as they were. Even at a young age I knew I was in good hands when I heard the knock on the door and Dr. Perriello's signature raspy voice on the other side. He was patient and caring to everyone he saw and brought a calm with him into the room which I quickly picked up on even as a scared child. Dr. Perriello will be greatly missed!

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Periello on a visit to Peds. Assoc. a few weeks before his retirement. He was a very gifted physician who truly cared about his patients. May God be with his family during their time of mourning.
