Valton Tyler

1944 - 2017

TYLER, Valton Valton Tyler, born on March 30, 1944 in Texas City, passed away on September 25, 2017 after a brief illness. A self-taught visionary artist who earned recognition for his paintings, drawings, and etchings, Valton is the subject of a new film, Valton Tyler: Flesh is Fiction, directed by Edward M. Gómez, art critic, art historian. The film will be screened at the 2017 Lone Star Film Festival in Fort Worth in early November. Valton's work was celebrated by The Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, in the exhibition, Invented Worlds of Valton Tyler, February 11-April 30, 2017. Other recent solo exhibitions were Channeling Other Worlds at Valley House Gallery, Dallas, in 2010; Valton Tyler, Exuberant Color at Phyllis Kind Gallery, New York City, in 2002; and Valton Tyler Visionary Landscapes at The MAC, Dallas, in 2000. Valton was preceded in death by his parents Naomi and Albert Tyler and his sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Frank Slayton. He is survived by his daughter Jeannette Tyler Bowers and her mother Rebecca Nickel Tyler; two grand-children Jacob Bowers and Chloe Bowers; his brother Robert Tyler and his wife Neva; his nieces Dianne Tyler Trotter and her husband Rob, Sheri Tyler Seidler and her husband Kurt, and Cindy Tyler Green and her husband Dave; his nephew Terry Slayton and his wife Alice; and his dearest friend Rika Rosenbach. Valton's unique sense of humor and generosity will be missed by all who knew him. Services will be held at 2pm, Friday, October 6, at Grove Hill Funeral Home, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas.
