Mike was a wonderful friend and teammate to me. We shared so many great times and laughs. I always felt very close to him. Still hardly a day, certainly not a week passes without memories of fishing trips, ski trips, hunting trips and business trips with him. I've never really been the same since I heard that we lost him. My heart goes out to Wilow and his kids.

Dear Ems Family, I had the pleasure of working for Mike at HP, I was his assistant. I got to know him very well and always enjoyed the sales meetings we all attended in Boston. I learned a lot from him on a personal and professional level, he talked about his family with such love. What a loss for all of us that knew him. My deepest sympathies.

My Mike
I'd like to share a few memories with you and tell you a little bit more about Mike, my brother, and our family.
Mike's first son Bryan was born two years before my first son. I asked Mike at the time for some advice about what to do when you go to the hospital for the birth. Mike's response – “when you get to the door start screaming for drugs”.
Prior to the birth of one of our children Mike brought me a snack to the delivery room. He and I were enjoying the food when “Mike said this childbirth thing is really no big deal”. When Megan started to push and her breathing intensified I turned to Megan and asked if she could try to keep the video camera still.
If you knew Mike, if you know our family, then you know we all enjoy a good laugh.
Can Mike come out to play?
How many of us recall a time when we were young and our friends would come over and ask - can Billy come out and play? We'll can you image the warmth Mike had when he was in his 30's to have young kids from the neighborhood come to the door and asked Willow - can Mike come out to play? That my friends is a legacy.
Mike never stopped being a kid.
Mike’s son Derek gave me the following to read during Mike’s memorial Service
“My dad was the strongest person I have ever met. He had my whole family on his shoulders, but never showed a sign of weakness, not because he had to, but because his standards were set so high. To me he was the perfect father figure. He always taught me to do the right thing. I aspire to be even half the man my dad was. The truth is I would give away anything in my possession just to tell my dad one more time how much I truly love him.
Dad I miss you- Derek”
Derek, we all have those feelings and love for your Dad. Which is the love we all have towards you, your Brother, Sister and Mom.
Bryan, Derek and Erin I know how much your Dad loved you and he knew how much you loved him and appreciated him – he told me.
Rest assured your Dad knew how much you loved him.
Let's think about Mike’s passing from two different perspectives, earthly, and eternal.
On the earthly side let's say in the earthly locker room we are sad.
Can you imaging what is going on in the other locker room – in the eternal locker room a crowd larger than all of us has welcomed Mike into the kingdom of heaven.
Can you all recall a time when you held an infant and the calm peace that came over you and the full love you had for that child?
We'll that is how I view Jesus holding, loving and taking care of Mike and I trust in him.
When I think of Mike's passing I think of the passing of a beautiful soul passing from us to Jesus and eternal life in heaven.
God chose the moment I was born and he chose my mother and father and – man were these two heaven sent
Many conversations I had with Mike over many years ended with “I love you Dave” - “I love you Mike.”
I'm not sure how common it is in families for grown men to share these thoughts with each other. I'd like to share with you how this came about. First it is a gift given to us by our Mom and Dad. As a kid, young adult and even today you can’t walk away without a kiss or hug.
Many years ago I was on the phone with my Brother Rick when for the first time he ended a conversation with I love you. This one I love you - became a theme that carried throughout all of our brotherly conversations between Mike, Rick and I.
My most recent conversations with Mike ended with an I Love You like all the others conversation we had. I thank Rick for this great gift and example.
On the night prior to Mike’s Memorial Service I had a great phone conversation with Mike’s Son Bryan. Bryan ended our conversation with “I Love You”. Thank you. Thank you Bryan for ending our conversation that night with an “I Love You.” It meant the world to me to here you say that – what an extraordinary act – you are already carrying on the torch.
So as you can imagine in our family we don't need to guess what Mike would say to us - we know what Mike would say - He told us.
Here are a few of Mike's words to my Dad in a birthday card.
“Now that Willow and I are raising our own kids I reflect back on the things you & Mom provided that we are wanting to mirror.
Things like creating an environment (home) where our kids & their friends want to be. I will always remember your house as the one where our friends met & stayed a while…. Discussing things openly around the dinner table – it seems that this is missing in a lot of families, but not in ours because of your & Mom's example.
Being involved on a daily basis, whether basketball games, boys scouts or whatever I remember you being there and being involved. I have a number of friends who don't practice this perhaps because they did not have the example that I was fortunate to have – you.
All in all I thank God for you. For what you have done for me & what you have taught me that I can pass on to my children. I respect and Love you a great deal. Happy Birthday Mike.”
Does that sound like a guy that would want you to focus on his passing – no, I know my brother, you know my brother, he wants us to focus on how he lived his life and how he brought happiness to our lives.
To Bryan, Derek, and Erin - We are a family. Bryan, when you first arrived in this world we had shirts made up that said, Welcome to our Family Bryan Austin Ems July 10th, 1989. Bryan, Derek and Erin look around you – you have a large family - all of us are your family and we are here to Love, Support and Help you.
You are welcome in our home at anytime because you are part of our family.
Mike did not leave home, he went home.
Please join me in Honoring the life of Mike the way he would want you to by focusing on the times you shared, the joy that you shared and remember take time to play with your kids, live life to the fullest and make a difference.
I know I'm going to focus on his lifetime and the joy he brought to my life.
We all wake up every morning and choose what to think - Mike would say “make it a great day”.
Mike - I love you, Dave

Dear Willow;
You may not remember me. I met you once or twice when I came back and visited family in Denver. I was just searching for old friends to reconnect with this year, and I came across the announcement of Mike's passing. I am so sorry.
I realize as life takes us in different directions, we often loose touch with people that meant so much and were a big part of shaping our lives. Mike was probably my closest friend in High school, and yet we lost touch when we went off to college. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I'm sorry I wasn't aware sooner. We can rejoice in the knowledge and assurance of being able to fellowship with my old friend for eternity.

I learned of Mike's passing from Glen Cahill in a Christmas letter, and please forgive me for not knowing until now. I met Mike in Jr. High and remained fiends with him through High School. At one point we were going to join the Marines together on the "Buddy System". I joined, he chose not to. Favorite Memory of Mike: We both worked at Ferrels Ice Cream Parlor, and both left for different jobs. One Halloween, when the Ferrel's employees dressed up, he and I dressed up in our old Ferrels busboy uniforms (complete with brim hat and Ferrels flair) and went to the store claiming it was both our birthdays, got free sundays, had them sing to up, and kisses on the cheeks from our waitresses. God Bless you my friend and rest in peace. Your excellent sense of humor will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. The above photo submitted by Brad Cross was taken in 1987 at the Columbine HS 10-year reunion. The line from left to right is Glen Cahill, Bret Maus, Brad Cross, and Mike.

Wow, almost a year later I'm just learning about this (shame on me). Mike and I were childhood friends growing up in Columbine Knolls. I spent many a summer hanging with Mike, playing baseball in his backyard, making bug collections, and watching the Apollo moon shots. His laugh is forever etched in my mind. Since moving from Colorado I only saw him at Columbine HS reunions and we rarely connected (pre-facebook), but whenever we got together we recalled those summers and laughed about the crazy things we did. I'm so sad to hear the news, but so happy to have those memories. My condolences to his family.

I had the good fortune to work with Mike at First Franklin. My fondest memory of Mike was during a new AE training session in San Jose. It had been a particularly long day of training and everyone was tired and ready to call it a day. Mike seemed to sense the let-down in the room and immediately got everyone to rally and finish the day with a bang! I'll always remember Mike for his ability to get people enthusiastic and his ability to challenge people to be their best. I am fortunate to have known Mike and the world is definitely without one of its brightest stars.
My prayers are with the entire Ems family during this difficult time...

Mike had such a way of inspiring the people around him with his words and actions, he will always be in our hearts and mind. The found memories of "Imagine if" or "what would it be like" and he always followed it with if you could spend more time with your family, this said a lot to his audience about his family. Mike was a great leader at First Franklin and made a lasting inpression on us.
Our prayers are with you and hope it sends as much positive to you as Mike did for us.

I called Mike my Teacher. He helped me not only "educate and elevate" my clients, but gave me the courage to live an inspired life in every aspect of it. I will remember my Teacher forever and, no matter what, will always "Bring It!"
I am so sorry for the loss to you, Willow, and to your children. Mike's powerful touch on my life and on thousands like me will, I pray, provide some measure of comfort to you.

Dear Willow,
Ron just told me yesterday of the sad passing of Mike. I just wanted you to know I am thinking of you and your children during this difficult time. I still remember a camping trip with your family, the Burris', and the Robbs when all our kids were still small. I also remember the very elaborate tree house Mike built for your kids. What a wonderful husband and father he was. I can only imagine how hard these last few weeks have been, Willow, and I want you to know I'm thinking of you. Take care of yourself.

Dear Ems family,
They say that “the success of a man’s life can be measured by the number of people whose lives he touched in a positive way” and if this is the case than Mike was truly a very successful man. I had the privilege and I emphasis the word privilege of working with Mike through First Franklin. He was a genuine man, who loved what he was doing, was always there to listen and offer his words of wisdom, never judged, and spoke often and highly about his family. While I didn’t get a whole lot of time to spend with Mike, the times I did were always inspiring, informative, and thought provoking. The lesson and tools he gave are ones that I will carry with me throughout my life. He was an inspiration and will be greatly missed.
To Mike’s family and his loved ones, please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you, I am truly sorry for your loss, he was a good man and one that I will always appreciate and remember, because I was one of the ones who’s life he touched in a positive way.

Dear Willow,
I think you probably remember me as we met a few times in the past. I worked for Mike at HP during his first tenure in management. Not having been in sales before, Mike took a chance on me and hired me into his sales organization. That's the kind of guy he was, always believing the best in people and helping others grow.
Mike and I had so much fun together and we shared so many meaningful conversations. I will never forget him and I feel like I've lost a brother.
I'm so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you and your family.

Brenda and I are available any time to lend a hand, help with the kids,or just lend a shoulder to cry on

Dear Willow and Family,
I had the honor and pleasure of working with Mike at First Franklin. The day he joined my team I knew he was no ordinary man. I was in awe observing Mike's ability to positively impact people's professional and personal lives, including my own. He gave so much to so many. Mike always spoke lovingly about his family. I enjoyed hearing the many milestones/accomplishments over the years we worked together- he was so proud of each of you. As evidenced by the hundreds of lives Mike Ems touched throughout the United States, Mike was one of the most selfless people we’ve had the pleasure of knowing. Mike was not only steadfast in his commitment to helping people achieve their highest level of professional success – he was 110% committed to everyone’s personal success. Always encouraging others to live a rich and fulfilling life. His smile, his laugh and his gentle heart touched us all and he will forever be missed as a friend, colleague and confidant. The world is sincerely a better place because of the legacy Mike Ems left us. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ems family during this time of loss and we thank you for the sacrifices you made as your father and husband reached out and gently touched the souls of hundreds of individuals, professionals and families.

Mike and your family has touched so many, and I'm sure you will continue the journey Mike has created for you and your kids. Hold on to the memories and he will live in your hearts forever. Dear Willow, Bryan, Derek and Erin,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of great loss and sorrow. He loved Willow and his children so much; he talked about them all the time and loved sharing news of their growth and accomplishments.
I have several fond memories of Mike's contributions to our neighborhood musical program. Mike's voice was rich, deep and versatile, and he possessed a fine sense of humor. His enthusiasm and willingness to contribute to the success of the show was refreshing and appreciated. His generosity included service to the community and neighborhood projects. We'll remember his great smile, his warmth and his many contributions.
