CLINTON FROHM Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 24 to Oct. 27, 2010.
Clinton Max Frohm The Music Man Our Husband, Dad and Opa completed his mortal journey on October 22, 2010 following a 15 month battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Clint was born May 15, 1945, the only child of Max and Louise Frohm, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Clint will be remembered for his love of music and his contributions to Music Education. Clint taught in the Granite School District, he began his classroom teaching at Granite High in 1973-1975, he moved onto Cottonwood High School teaching there for 23 years. He then took the position as the Music Curriculum Specialist for the Granite School District this position he held until July 2010. He cherished his association with the Granite Youth Symphonies. Clint Graduated from Highland High School in 1963. He went on to the University of Utah graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and his Master's of Education in 1979. He loved teaching music and was able to influence many students to embrace music as a lifelong interest. Clint was a professional musician and sideman. In this capacity he played with many shows that came through town including Elvis Presley, Ringling Brothers Circus and the Ice shows. He played as an extra with the Utah Symphony as well as in the pit orchestra at PMT. Clint taught private trumpet lessons to many young players. Clint conducted the Murray Symphony for 28 years and loved the members of that organization. He played in every musical organization at the University of Utah, but loved jazz the most. He continued his connection with the U through the Alumni Band and his avid support of its athletics program until this year. He truly is our Utah Man. Clint loved his country and manifested that love by serving in the United States Army Reserve for 28 years. His last assignment was with the newly formed MP unit at Fort Douglas. He retired in May of 2000 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Clint loved the Gospel and was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a 30 month mission to Oslo, Norway. He served in many callings from a Primary teacher to High Priest Group leader. His favorite calling was as an ordinance worker; first at the Jordan River Temple and then at the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. His devotion to His Lord and Savior was an example to his family and many others. Clint married Shelley Gulbransen, his loving companion, wifey and friend, December 15, 1972 in the Salt Lake Temple. They had four children whom he loved dearly. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren with number 11 on the way. Although Clint was an only child his life was blessed by his close associations with aunts, uncles and cousins (who he thought of as his brothers and sisters). Clint was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife, Shelley, Herriman, UT; his children Robert Max Frohm (Lindsay) San Antonio, TX; Kirsten Lee (Adam) Herriman, UT; Emily Bonner (William) Riverton, UT; and Spencer Frohm (Brittany) Provo, UT. The family wishes to thank Jonathan Whisenant and the UCS staff for their care in his cancer journey as well as the Staff of Utah Hospice Specialists for their tender end of life care. We love you Opa and will miss your smile and tickle monster. Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 29, 2010, 10:30 a.m. at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 So.) Viewings will be held on Thursday evening from 5-8 p.m. and Friday from 9-10 a.m. prior to services. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Our sincere conodolenes to Clinton's family. We knew Elder Frohm in Norway when he was on his mission. He was in our home often. We recall him playing the trumpet with the "Mormonaires" a missionary music group. They made their first musical recording in our home since we had a piano. He was a great missionary and served well! We were in the U.S.A.F., stationed in Oslo with NATO.

My friend Clint mentored me as the Granite School Music Specialist as I am a Teacher in the District. We've worked together for the Veteran's Day Concert and many meetings during the years. He's so positive, energetic, and passionate about music and I use his statement, "Life Without Music Is A Mistake" in many gatherings with students and parents. His farewell was magnificent. His message was conveyed from the instruments to my heart and soul. His testimony, his love of his family, his passion towards music and his wonderful choice of the printed sound of the music warmed the building. How glorious will be the added music in the spirit world as he joins the heavenly throng. May the Lord comfort you and strengthen you as the days lengthen. He is my hero.

Clint Frohm is the epitome of music. Having had two children who enjoyed playing with the Granite Youth Symphony, it was my pleasure to interact with this man occasionally. His smile and sense of humor were contagious, and he exuded love for his art. He always greeted me with a friendly chat and made me feel as if we were old friends. We are all better people for having known Clint Frohm.

Sister Frohm. I was out of town with my family when we heard of Clint's passing and was unable to attend either the viewing or the funeral. In reading the obituary I was again reminded of his passion for music and my telling him that he reminded me of Richard Dreyfus and Mr. Holland's Opus. I loved my association with him and cherished our friendship. I still have fond memories of our most recent accociation at the temple on Saturday mornings as he so faithfully served as veil coordinator in spite of the pain he endured. What a tribute to a great brother who served until the very end of his mortal journey. Brother Martin shared his thoughts with me this past Saturday which included the temple devotional performance of our temple choir. This once again caused me to reflect on this great man and brother. My life has truly been blessed and made richer through my association with him and what he gave and shared with so many others. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

I recall being a member of the Murray Utah North Stake Choir many years ago when we presented 'The Messiah' with Clint directing. We worked so hard especially with the 'Amens' and with the choir not quite able to get it right that number was scrubbed at the last minute even though Clint kept working with us confident that we could do it.

I will always be grateful to him for allowing me to perform one of the solos 'Every Valley' even though there were many others who would have been able to do it better. His confidence in me will not be forgotten.

I am deeply saddened at the passing of Clint. He was my teacher, my mentor, my friend. I took private lessons from Clint back in the mid 70's. Shelley and family,

We are saddened to hear of Clint's being summoned to the other side of the veil, but likely needed a good music man. I'm sure he will give Gabriel a run for his money on the jazz solos. I first got to know Clint when we were both in the U of U Marching Band and ROTC programs. These are fun memories I will always cherish, and Clint's antics and musical abilities made it a big thing for me.

Clint and I served many crossing assignments as we wended our way up the Army Reserve together, and he was an excellent officer. I always took pride in watching him lead the combined choirs in his Dress Blues at the Veterans Concerts. I also want to thank you guys for your support of our Sugarhouse Video store, short-lived as the store was.

It is a great statement and legacy about a person when one can look back at the life of one such as Clint and see the almost uncountable number of people that he had very positive and meaningful impacts on, through happiness, comedy, love, education, music, friendship, leadership, mentoring, fun, religion and commitment to his Savior. We will all miss him, until we can meet with him again.

Shelly, Kirsten, Emily, Rob, Spencer, in-laws and grandchildren,
What a privilege it has been to have worked with your sweet husband, father and grandfather. The best word we can think of to describe Clint is valiant. He was valiant and dedicated to so many things - but most of all to his family. After all these years of association through music and music advocacy he has grown to be like a big brother to me. I have learned so much from him. He had a great sense of humor and concern for others. He was always a perfect gentlemen and portrayed his values through his actions. What a role model for so very many people! Our lives and that of countless others have been greatly enriched by association with this dear friend. May we all strive to live up to his example. It has been fun for Tim and I to watch yours and our children grow up and share in special occasions. I look forward to that family friendship continuing. May you find peace and comfort in your knowledge of the eternal nature of family, and may the Lord bless you.

To the Frohm family,

Three types of people receive the greatest expressions of love at their passing: obstetricians, drug counselors, and teachers. These are the people who are there to make and save our lives. And Mr. Frohm did it through music.

I had the honor of meeting and working with Mr. Frohm as a fellow alumnus of the U of U Marching Band. What an inspiration of art and humanity. Venerated by peers, admired by friends, and beloved by his great family. May his memory serve as a beacon for all who have been under his baton.

We were sorry to hear of Clint's passing, but what a blessing for him to be free of such a horrible disease. We have fond memories of our time as neighbors in Murray. Dear Shelley and family,
From our earthbound perspective, Clint's early departure is saddening. But from an eternal perspective it is freedom and opportunity. I know that you know that, but it is still difficult to absorb. We mourn with you, but we also rejoice that Clint did his job well, making all of us better for his presence.

A most profound experience happened to me in high school. When I was 16 years old, I took a year-long music history class at Cottonwood High from Clinton Frohm--pretty cool high school course for someone like myself. Clint gave me and the other students the opportunity to write an original composition--pretty cool assignment. By the end of my junior year, I was composing piano pieces and had firm foundation in Western music history. I have been composing music and doing musicological research ever since. Were it not for Mr. Frohm's imaginative teaching curriculum, my life would lack a great deal of its richness. Thanks for your service to Utah's music community, Clint!

Clint was doing his student teaching at Granite High back in 1973 when I was in the Stage Band there. We all loved him, but little did we know what a great influence he would have on so many people. Clint showed Mr Holland how to do it!

Eldste Frohm and I wandered the streets of Oslo back in 1966. He was an impressive missionary and taught me some valuable lessons. It is heart warming to read about the many lives he has touched in the last 40+ years. A good and faithful servant, husband, father and grandfather. I too am closer to the harp than the guitar and expect we will meet again.

I first saw Clint rehearsing with the U of U jazz band. He cracked more jokes between songs than most stand-up comedians do in their entire routine. I'm sure that he was paid back in triplicate by the wise-cracks and antics of his thousands of students over the years. What a great cat, he will be missed.

I am one of many who were touched by Mr. Frohm in the Granite Youth Symphony. Shelly and family,

May the Lord comfort you during this difficult time. But, also take comfort know that Clint's influence goes on and on!

Clint was a hero to MANY of us in the music education profession. There is nobody who more nobly carried the torch for music in our schools! From being a GREAT teacher and musician to encouraging so many to serve others through the profession--he did it all.

It would be impossible to measure the impact that he has had on colleagues, students, and "students of students." The circle of his influence will continue to grow and THAT is exactly what the rest of us in the profession should work for. May he look down with his unforgettable smile on the continuation of his work and may we all look up and thank the Lord for people like him that have touched so many. Clint, you have blessed all of our lives!

To The Frohm Family:

I love this great man. He left a great memory in my heart. My son(Clayton La'ulu) loved him while as a band student under his guidance and leadership. We never missed a concert while my son was in Cottonwood High. I met him in person once after a band practice my son invited me to attend. I introduced myself to him and told him who my son was. He looked me in the eyes and in the sincerity of his heart said, "I love that boy". I resonated in the like manner and told him that I love him as well. I walked away a happy father for his kind words touched my heart. Now in his passing, the man whom I only knew briefly and aquainted with through our son has left a sweet note of melody in my heart and a few tears for the memories of his kindness.
I express my love and prayers for you all.

Shelley & Family: I'm truly saddened to lose Clint. He and I first met in 1970 when we were both hired to play on the same gig. Since then we played in various bands and ensembles together for almost 40 years. A truly gifted musician, great teacher and mentor to many. I can remember playing late evening gigs with Clint on Friday nights when he would get up on Saturday morning (very early) and be an ordinance worker at the Temple. I'm sure he is having a wonderful reunion with family and friends who preceded him! Clint is remembered, loved, and missed. Love to all the family.

My deepest sympathy to the Frohm families at this time. The passing of Clint Frohm saddened me immensely. Mr. Frohm was one of the greatest educators and musicians in the state of Utah. The impact that he had on generations of students, specifically at Cottonwood High School, lives on as his lifes' legacy. I was privileged to be his student at CHS from 94'-96'. He promised me that if I stayed committed to my music, it would return the favor and pay for my college education. And it did. Thank you Mr. Frohm, for all the silly remarks as well as serious admonitions. There will never be another like you. I have a photo of us in the Pit Orchestra for Music Man, and you are trying to put your baton up my nose. :) So typical! You are my teacher, my friend, and a hero to thousands. Thank you for teaching us the power of music, and to love ourselves and push ourselves a little harder. The angels in heaven now have a worthy accompanist. God rest to you Mr. Frohm. You have earned your standing ovation.

I was very shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Frohm. I had the privilege to learn from him at Cottonwood and privately. Dear Frohm family,

I am so saddened by this news. Clint was a ray of sunshine and a wonderful man. I loved his infectious happiness during my years at Cottonwood and the few times we saw each other at Snowbird. Heaven is a better place for his being there, a place not so very far away. May you be blessed with peace and comfort in this time of sorrow, and may your days be filled with happy memories.

October 26, 2010

Clint was a wonderful conductor. He was able to bring the Granite Senior Symphony to the schools that I have worked in several times through the years. I always appreciated him so much for working my at-risk schools into his schedule. Our students needed the enrichment and the exposure to great music. And WOW what a performance they delivered! It never failed to bring me to tears. I will miss him. He was a man of many talents and a kind person. Yvonne Pearson, Principal, Hillsdale Elementary

Mr. Frohm was my American History teacher, and I remember him substituting for Dr. Lee on occasion when I was in the choir at Cottonwood. He was always bursting with enthusiasm; walking down the school halls, and always said hello to everyone he passed by. His excitement for teaching American History was intense; really made you think kind of intense. We’ll miss you Mr. Frohm. My condolences to your loving family. Rest In Peace "Mr. Inspiration Leader". ~ Dori Smith Mead (Class of '88)

If you ever needed to find a smile, all you needed to do was find Clint. I loved working with him at the Veteran's Day Concerts and chatting occasionally about our music groups. He was always an inspiration to me and will be remembered as a true friend.

Mr. Frohm was my teacher at Cottonwood High School. I was his student between the years of 88-90, as a trumpet player. I always enjoyed his classes, but mostly the respect that he gave me as a student and as an equal. God belss him, as well as your family.

Much love to the Frohms; Your father was a huge influence on my life and when I think of my High School years, he is a constant face as both my teacher and friend as well as someone that would kick me in the butt when i screwed up; Prayers go out to you all

To the Frohm Family,

Mr. Frohm was a gifted teacher and the many students who benefitted from his talents will never forget the joy he brought to his profession. I add my prayers and wishes to those expressed already. What an honor to have shared even that brief time with such an honorable man.

I was a cellist in the orchestra at Granite High when Mr. Frohm arrived. We all loved him and were very sad when two years later he went to Cottonwood. If fact, I even left the orchestra my last year in high school because his replacement just didn't measure up to Mr. Frohm. My sincerest condolences in your loss.

Very few individuals on this earth have made such a positive effect on the lives of so many as Clint Frohm did. I knew Clint for over 35 years and shared in some of Clint's proudest moments as a teacher-winning his last two state jazz titles in 1980-81' at Cottonwood HS- and also as a fellow professional trumpet player-performing by his side during his prime on many gigs. Clint Frohm was a remarkable individual in a myriad of ways and a brilliant trumpet player with "iron chops" who never had a bad day playing ever. He was always $, nothing less! He also was a devoted husband, loving father and a great man who lived to his potential. I am certainly glad to know that Clint's pain from the nasty disease he contracted is over with. He simply didn't deserve it. As many people feel, I'm quite positive, a piece of each of us died with Clinton Max Frohm the other day. If there is a heaven, Clint will be playing lead trumpet in God's band! Rest well sir!

My condolences to the family. I enjoyed playing with Clint in the Junction City Big Band, judging with him at festivals, and working with him at UMEA events. He was a very strong supporter of music education in this state. He will be missed.

Mr. Frohm was my band teacher while at CHS 81-83. I was in several bands and had him for several classes, not to mention the early morning jazz band pracrise and summer marching band. We went on many trips to compete and played at faculty dances and recorded records and marched in the Christmas parade. I spend more of my high school with him than any other teacher. His influence on my life was profound. I have a deep love for music that continues even at my older age of 45. Thank you Mr. Frohm for cultivating that in me. To this day music is a huge part of my life, when I review in my mind the circle of 5ths, I see Mr. Frohm writing it on the board. My deepest sympathies to the Frohm family and friends. My thanks to you and to him for making my life more musical.

I will always remember Mr. Frohm my band teacher at Cottonwood High '97-98. He was a great music teacher and I always enjoyed his lighthearted way of conducting rehearsals. He was a great man and I am very sorry to hear of his passing. My heart goes out to the Frohm family; Spencer and Brittany, you are in our prayers. May the Lord's tender mercies be upon you.

Clint was a colleague and friend. I first learned to love and respect him for the amazing children I had the opportunity to teach. Later I had the opportunity to work with Clint in Granite School District and learned to respect his opinion and work ethic. I am so sorry for your loss, but am amazed at the impressive legacy he leaves behind. What an honor it has been to know Clint and the Frohm family. I am blessed that our paths crossed early in life.

I had the great privilege of working with Clint in the MSO for some 10 years. His love and appreciation for every person I ever saw interact with him spoke loud and clear. I'll never forget his sense of humor, his professionalism, or all the amazing work he did to make this world better.

Thanks for everything, Clint, and we'll be seeing you again.

When I came to Salt Lake City from Ohio 21 yrs. ago, Clint was one of the first music teachers that I had the pleasure of meeting along with Steve Richins and John Miller. My thoughts were something like, "My Goodness! Are all Utah teachers really this Great?" Well, "Great" was an accurate assessment. I enjoyed my friendship with Clint immensely. Not only was he a wonderful music educator, but he has a wonderful human being--passionate, caring, and funny. I will miss him. My condolences to the entire family.

How saddened I am by this news!!

I was lucky enough to have Mr. Frohm's class my Sophomore year-the last he taught at Cottonwood. Although it's been 15 years I can still remember his jokes, laughter, kindness, his patience and encouraging words for me-in spite of the fact I should have given up the flute years before coming to his class-but mostly his passion for music, teaching, and the love he had for his students. I will always feel so lucky and honored that although it was only one year I can count myself among the lucky students given the opportunity to learn from him.
I will be forever grateful for the opportunity I had to see him and thank him for all he did for me when I saw him conducting the pit for "South Pacific" in 2008.
My prayers and condolences to the Frohm family at this difficult time, but I hope you all have peace knowing you will be together again soon.

I too played the trumpet but long ago at the U of U. Clint was always a postive and uplifting class mate. Even though time has passed so quickly I remember his great sense of humor and passion for life.

Mr. Frohm was an amazing and charismatic man. He impacted so many students at Cottonwood High and I'm sure many others as well. No matter what, being 3rd row, last chair violinist, he always encouraged me to keep playing. Maybe tonight I will take it out and tune it up for him....Blessed be

Dear Frohm Family - I am saddened to hear of the passing of a such a great mentor, Mr. Frohm. I had the priviledge to be taught by Mr. Frohm for 3 years while at CHS. He inspired me, and many others, to do our best, while having fun! His positive influence helped me in orchestra, as well as jazz band, leading me to get a full tuition scholarship in music, which has shaped the direction of my entire life. His talents are long reaching, and he touched MANY lives through music. May the Lord bless and comfort your family and give you the peace of knowing this awesome teacher is now teaching on the other side!

Dear Shelley and Family:

We are profoundly sorry to hear of Clint's passing.

Clint is unforgettable.

He was at once a man of great character and a great character! He always laughed easily and made others laugh easily.

He was immensely talented as a musician, and I treasure the time that I played next to him.
