James Savage Obituary

James Munroe Savage, a physician, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2011, at his home in Azle. Funeral: 10 a.m. Monday at Ash Creek Baptist Church in Azle. Interment: Ash Creek Cemetery. Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Biggers Funeral Home. Memorials: May be made in Dr. Savage's name to the Azle Animal Shelter Humane Association, 613 S.E. Parkway, Azle, Texas 76020, (AzleAnimalShelter.org) Dr. James Munroe Savage was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Gainesville to Eno Oliver and Madge Ophelia Munroe Savage. Dr. Savage always thought he would be a carpenter even after graduating from high school in Anson at the age of 15. He attended trade school for two years in Canyon until World War II began. He enlisted in the Navy so that he would not get drafted and have to slog through the mud. Because he was a First Class Boy Scout and had completed the first aid merit badge, he was trained as a hospital apprentice first class, and was quickly assigned to the First Marine Division, 7th Marine Regiment, C Company, 1st Medical Battalion, as a corpsman - so much for the mud. He saw action in Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, New Guinea, Guadalcanal and Okinawa, and was stationed in Tientsin, China, after the war. He was very blessed. He was the only member of his unit of corpsman that was not killed or wounded in action. Through the GI Bill, he attended TCU and then the University of Texas Medical School. He married Mary Louise Hames in 1953 and after his internship at John Peter Smith, moved to Azle to start his residency in 1955. Dr. Savage practiced medicine in Azle for 35 years and even after retirement still took care of the Azle Manor Medicare patients until just a couple of years ago. He was one of the last of the country doctors. He made house calls, performed surgeries and delivered over 2,000 Azle residents. He also served as chief of staff at Harris Methodist Northwest Hospital after being instrumental in founding the hospital in Azle. He was a member of Azle Christian Church, several community organizations and was president of the Azle school board for 14 of his 15 years on the board. He was also Azle Citizen of the Year in 1969. Dr. Savage was an avid golfer, avid hunter, target shooter, private pilot and tennis player and enjoyed living on Eagle Mtn Lake for 47 years. He enjoyed his family and took them to many wonderful places, of which Pagosa Springs, Colo., was his favorite. It's a wonder he had time to practice medicine at all. Overall, his quote from a 1985 article in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram sums him up: "I'd like to be remembered as a modern country doctor and as someone who was a friend to people, because we've grown up here together." Dr. Savage was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Cmdr. Billy Bob Savage; and sister, Betty Fleming. Survivors: Wife, Mary Savage; sister, Anna Horton; daughter, Janice Grannan; son, Brian Savage and wife, Becky Savage; and grandchildren, Jason Grannan, Meagan Grannan, Molly Grannan, Race Savage, Dillon Savage and Maverick Savage.

Dear Savage Family,
What a special dad you had; what a special town Doc Azle Had. Our hearts and prayers go out to you all. It would only be fitting for Azle to erect a memorial to Doctor Savage, a kind and loving man, husband, father and town doctor. Maybe Harris NW will erect a statue of Doc Savage at the entry to the hospital - it would be most fitting and a great tribute to a great man. He will be dearly missed.

To the Savage family -
I know there is no doubt in any of your minds that Dr Savage is loved by all. He was a nurturing, compassionate doctor, proud of his children and grandchildren and a friend to all. He would make the time to listen no matter how long it might take. Azle certainly will never be as bright again without out the warmth he always gave so freely.

To the Savage Family: It is with deepest regret that I read about 'Our Doctor' in the Star Telegram. He was a great man throughout all the years that I and my family knew him. He gave me and my wife our medical exam before we married some 53 years ago and he delivered our three boys He was always there to treat anyone at any time he was needed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Doc's family. Joe Richardson, Taylor, Texas

Dr. Savage cared for me as a child and I worked with him for years as a nurse. He was a remarkable man and a compassionate doctor. His contribution to the health and well being of our community can never be measured or repaid. This great doctor treated everyone he met with kindness and respect, no matter their station in life. The world will not be the same without him, but it comforts me to know that he is now golfing and sharing stories with The Great Physician! I'm so glad I'll see him again soon-

I am greatly saddened to hear of the loss of a great physician and leader in the community, Dr James Savage. Azle was lucky to have had such a great person, Dr. Savage, in the community. He touched so many lives including mine. When my family moved to Azle in 1970, I was in the 6th grade and Dr Savage became my Doctor. He always had a smile on his face, even when he had to come in to the hospital on July 4, 1979 to deliver my second child at 9:25pm which caused him to miss the fireworks on the lake. Also, I would have never made it through nursing school, if it wouldn’t have been for him. When I was ready to give it up in my third semester of nursing school, he sat me down in his office and told me that “a smart person is not one who knows it all because this is impossible.” He gave his four sided rotating bookcase a spin and said “A smart person is not someone who knows everything for this is impossible. A smart person is who knows where to go to find the information he needs.” Thank you Dr. Savage for all you gave daily to individuals and to your community. You will be missed immensely. I hope I will get to see you on the other side.
Sincerely, Kally Felts RN

It saddened me to learn of Dr. Savage's passing. The first time my family met him was in the late 50's when he came to our home to treat my mother. My parents have passed on, but Dr. Savage was their doctor until the end. He had the best bedside manner of any doctor I've known. I'll never forget him or the kindness he showed to the Ritchey family. My condolences to the Savage family.

Thank you Doc for everything you've done for my family and this community. You saw my grandmother through cancer, my grandfather through falls from trees that at age 93 he had no business being in, my mom and myself through numerous bumps, bruises and illness and, yes Doc I listened, no more riding on the hoods of cars and my boys through many childhood woes. You always had a kind word, to go along with your lecture on where we went wrong and how not to do it again. Until we meet again Doc, I'm comforted knowing your keeping my grandparents company.

The Savage Family,
Thank you for sharing the best boss anyone could ever hope to have. He gave me 28years of employment, inspiration and friendship. He always told me that if you listened to a patient long enough, they would tell you what was wrong with them.
God Bless a great listener!

Dr Savage Brought me into this world in 1959 at Northwest Hospital on 28th Street, he came there from Azle because my Grandmother Janie Willis was his Nurse Tech at the time, he slept on an operating table all night just waiting on me to get here. This had always shown me what kind of a man he was. He will be missed dearly. My Condolences go out to his family in this time of sorrow.
