Tom Hoskins Obituary

Tom Hoskins, 71, retired president of the Dunlap Co., author and pundit, died early Saturday, March 26, 2016, after a long battle with and complications from multiple myeloma. Tom died at the end of Good Friday, which is apropos if you knew him. Service: His service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 313 N. Center St., Arlington, Texas 76011. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice. Tom was born in the back room of his family's farmhouse outside Post on May 27, 1944, to Billie and Jack Hoskins. The third of six children, he was raised on a dry-land cotton farm where he learned the lifelong lessons of hard work and long hours through hoeing and picking cotton, milking cows and driving tractors. Tom told fond stories of his upbringing and how his West Texas heritage shaped him into the man and businessman he became. The values of loyalty, honesty and hard work were the bedrock of his life. Tom attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse in New Moore and high school in O'Donnell, where he was valedictorian of his graduating class of 1962. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1966 with a BBA. In 1963, Tom married his high school sweetheart, Janice Stewart Clayton, and they graduated from Texas Tech together. They were happily married for 52 years and raised two daughters whom they taught to be kind, forgive easily and place others before themselves. While attending college, Tom worked for Dunlap's Department Store in Lubbock. He joined the Dunlap Co.'s management after college graduation, managing stores in Lubbock, Pampa and Midland before joining Dunlap's executive office in Fort Worth in 1977. Tom was named president of the Dunlap Co. in 1993, continuing in this position until 2001. Upon his retirement, the Dunlap Co. had grown to include 60 department stores in 11 states. In his retirement, Tom oversaw real estate, banking and farm interests. He also renovated and maintained his family farm and began to write about his heritage and life in West Texas. He wrote three books, one of which was titled "Hoskilonians," a collection of "points of life" he had collected over a lifetime that he highlighted with stories from his own life. These points of light were often humorous and many times convicting or thought-provoking. Two favorite points of light were "Character is who you are when no one is looking" and "A man never regrets a decision made in kindness." Tom's hobbies included the '54 Ford Club of America, which he founded, and fishing, especially at Possum Kingdom Lake. He had a great love for nature and included his five beloved grandchildren in his adventures in the great outdoors. Tom was a devout member of First United Methodist Church of Arlington and its Lamplighters Sunday School Class where he served as class president twice as well as heading finance, building, PPR and official boards for numerous years. His church was the center of his life. Tom also served on various boards in Tarrant County over many years, including United Way, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Texas Retailers Association, Arlington Chamber of Commerce and Harris Methodist Hospital, and served as president of Arlington's Rotary Club. We will miss this unique man who was in many ways larger than life. He lived to help people overlooked by others and felt it his calling to make everyone in his life feel special and loved. He was a loving, trustworthy and protective husband, father and friend to those God entrusted him with. At the end of his book, "Hoskilonians," Tom wrote that a man in his 60s "regrets some things but only wishes he had more time to show more compassion, love and care to others." Tom wished he had listened more and talked less. He wished he had told more people he loved them. He didn't really need to worry on that account but it is a lesson in life worth remembering for all of us. Tom was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Brian; and parents, Billie and Jack Hoskins and Wayne and Jessie Clayton. Survivors: His wife, Janice; beloved daughters, Laurie Carol Nipp of Raleigh, N.C., and Julia Elizabeth Schlitt of Austin; son-in-law, Carriel E. Nipp; his wonderful grandchildren, Carriel Taylor, Jessica Katherine and Grace Elizabeth Nipp of Raleigh and John Jackson and Adele Catherine Schlitt of Austin; brothers, Jack, Joe and Chuck Hoskins; sisters, Margaret McCullough and Judy Freeman; many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins; and a multitude of friends.

Looking at '54 fords tonight I am remembering a dear friend. After we would finish mowing his yard, Tom would walk across the street with me and sit for a while. He would have a beer and he would grab me a sprite out of the fridge in his garage. We would sit and visit or just sit and say nothing. Taking the time to appreciate the beautiful yard we finished. Taking the time to appreciate everything is one of many lessons Tom gave me that I now pass on to my four sons. God bless you Tom. Thank you for everything.

Heaven gained a very energetic youthful spirit this Easter weekend. Tom displayed courage in the face of a dire cancer diagnosis and continued his work, as only he could, to make as many friends feel loved with his gentle wit and enormous charm.
If anything, Tom presented in the best light possible the values and morals of a bygone era. Hard work. Love of Family. Trust in God...all these things he remembered and never let go of. And now the nostalgic longing for the happier times will live on in all of those who knew Tom. Till we meet again!

Janice and family members, My sincerest and deep sympathy to each of you in the loss of Tom. From the time I had him as a sophomore student in my typing class at O'Donnell through the time he served on my business advisory committee at the college where I taught until my retirement in 2001, Tom was always that hard-working, trustworthy, ethical, and down-to-earth leader that you always enjoyed having in your life. When we would see each other at community meetings or business meetings, he would always laugh and describe himself as "the only student I ever had who could never type more than 30 words per minute but still got an A." I don't remember the 30 wpm but I do know that Tom earned the A just as he earned all the other accomplishments in his life.

I was just 21 when I began teaching at O'Donnell and Tom was a member of my "first class" of students. All those students remain in the fond memories of my teaching career and I am so glad that I was able to know and work with Tom over the years since. May each of you hold your memories of Tom close and remember the good things and good times he brought to your life. Janice and family members, may the Lord bless you and comfort you in the days to come. (O'Donnell faculty, 1960-1962)

Janice and Family,
We are so sorry to hear about Tom, I had just called him about two weeks ago to check on him and see if he needed anything done at the lake. I know I have only know Tom since last October but what an impression he made on Missy and me. He was very informative and very giving. I was looking forward to spending time with him this spring and summer at the lake. I still have a lot to learn about Possum Kingdom Lake and was hoping that Tom would be able to fill me in. I really appreciated the time that you and I were able to sit on the back porch and talk. I know in talking with you that Tom's life was never boring and that he has a zest for life and giving back. I hope that the people he touched can harness a piece of that zest and learn to be more giving as Tom was. I hope to be that type of person in my future years. We hope to see you at the lake soon. Please call me if you need anything. Our prayers are with you.

This made my heart sad when I read it on Facebook. Tom was one of the first "kids" I met when we moved to the O'Donnell area, because it was Sunday and he was there for church, and I was starting to school the next day. He told me what it would be like at school and told me hilarious stories about his sister. Tom was always just Good. I loved his New Moore book. We got so many laughs from it. My condolences to all his family. There will never be a duplicate TOM.

Barry and I still feel like new members to the Lamplighters Class, but one of the first people we met when we joined was Tom Hoskins! I wondered why everyone laughed when he spoke, but I soon learned that he was just a very funny (haha) man!!!! Like the time he said he had a "Powerful Message" and I really though he might be a Preacher! Then the time he said his wife was going out of town, and I asked him if it was a "joy" or a "concern" and he said a "joy"! I will never forget him and we will try to keep his memory alive forever!!!!!

Tom was a wonderful friend and mentor to me and so many others. His advice and counsel was always on point and I will still find his wisdom in "Hoskilonians". As Tom wrote, "Example is better than lecture." He was a great example. I will miss my friend, Tom.

Tom was a wonderful human being - he inspired all that met him. In the late 1980s, Tom recognized that our antique automobile hobby was lacking parts and information for 1954 Fords, a car which he himself owned. Thus, he formed a specific car club "The '54 Ford Club of America". The word got out and slowly built up to nearly 500 members. Tom sent out an informative and humorous quarterly newsletter to the membership for over two decades. It helped provide a place to find and share needed parts for Ford owners. Today, 30 years later the club continues to flourish thanks to his foresight, determination and love of the hobby.
I had the pleasure of finally meeting Tom in 2014 at our '54 Ford Club convention in Novi,Michigan. As has been previously written, Tom always made everyone feel like they were the most important person in the world.
Our club is saddened by the loss of our leader and good friend. Tom made the world a better place - the reason I believe we were placed on this earth. My thoughts go out to Mrs.Hoskins and family. You should be proud of all of Tom's accomplishments and are so lucky to have had such a wonderful spouse and father.
We will miss him!

Prayers to all of Tom's family and friends. Tom ,his parents, and brothers and sisters have been like my very own family since I was 16. They helped raise me and supported me in my endeavors. Tom trained me in the workplace to be personable, friendly, and accomodating to Dunlaps customers. I have carried these valuable traits with me throughout my life.Til we meet again my friend and brother. Treasure Thaggard

The first time I met Tom I had the privilege of playing football with him and his brothers in the backyard of his parents house west of Tahoka. I have been blessed beyond measure to have know him, his siblings, and parents all these years. The years have went by too fast. His book about him growing up was amazing. I thank God for putting him on this earth. We will miss him!
