John Holschuh Obituary

HOLSCHUH The Honorable John D. Holschuh Sr., 84, passed away at his residence in Columbus, OH, on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 with his loving family by his side. John D. Holschuh Sr. was born in Ironton, OH on October 12, 1926 to the late Edward A. Holschuh, a millwright, and the late Helen Ebert Holschuh. He graduated from Ironton High School class of '44 and received a scholarship to attend Miami University at Oxford, OH. While there he was elected to Phi Delta Kappa and was president of the social fraternity, the Miami Chapter of Delta Upsilon. He graduated first in his class in 1948, and received a scholarship to attend the University of Cincinnati College of Law, from which he graduated in 1951. While at law school, he was the Editor-in- Chief of the Cincinnati Law Review, President of his law school fraternity, the Chase Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta, and a member of the Order of the Coif. After graduating from law school, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Mell G. Underwood, United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Ohio. He then practiced with in the law firm of McNamara & McNamara , and then later as an associate and partner in the firm Alexander, Ebinger, Holschuh, Fisher, & McAllister in Columbus where he focused his practice in trial work, both at the state and federal courts. In 1980, at the recommendation of Sen. John Glenn, President Jimmy Carter appointed John Holschuh to the U. S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He proudly served his state and country as a Federal Judge, sitting on the bench until his death. As said by his colleagues, "John was a gentleman, but a loving husband father and grandfather first. His family mattered most to him. He had a love for the law, and always tried to show fairness, and dignity in his courtroom. He enjoyed lecturing and mentoring up and coming law clerks, lawyers, and judges." Judge Holschuh has been a major influence in many people's lives throughout his illustrious career, and he will be missed not only by his family but his extended law family and friends as well. Along with his parents, Judge Holschuh was preceded in death by his first wife of 40 years Carol Stouder Holschuh. His survivors include his wife, Celeste Holschuh; son, John D. (Wendy) Holschuh Jr.; grandchildren, Heather, John D. III, and Jacob; and sister, Carolyn Flamm, of Massillon, OH. The family will be receiving friends at the SCHOEDINGER MIDTOWN CHAPEL, 229 E. Dear John, Wendy and Holschuh Family, I was very saddened and shocked to hear of your father's passing. I know there are no words at a time like this that are adequate, but please find comfort in being able to have had him as long as you did. As a father he gave you, by example, a man to be proud of; and likewise, I am sure your success and your family provided him with pride that completes a father's existence. He left this world a better place for the short time we had him. Take care my good friend. You are in my thoughts.

Dear Celeste, John Jr. and Family,

I am so sorry for this very personal loss. The Judge was a true gentleman, the very embodiment of what one wants "a judge" to be. In an age of cynicism, he restored our faith that the justice system was honorable, and he made each of us proud to play our part. The bond between clerk and judge is a very special one, and over the years I have been privileged to discover it is a life-long one, as well. Thank you for sharing him with us all for these many years.

I am the daughter of Graydon Clyde Bazell. Judge Holschuh was one of my father's dearest friends. Over my lifetime, I have appreciated the joy, the depth, this friendship has brought to my father's life. He will be deeply missed by my dad, and I will miss reveling in their abiding, enduring brotherhood.

It was a pleasure practicing in front of him. I learned more in a few years than I did in law school. He was a friend and mentor. His guidance helped me establish the Federal Public Defenders Office. My condolences to his family.

John Holschuh was the first Holschuh I corresponded with outside of my own NY/NJ Holschuh clan while I was researching family history after the birth of my daughter in 1989. I had no idea there were other Holschuhs out there and when I heard the name John Holschuh on CNN Headline News (he was presiding over the Pete Rose gambling trial) in my living room on Rota Naval Base in Spain, I called my grandfather who put me in touch with him.

He was very kind (and I'm sure very busy!) and provided me with information that was very helpful in establishing my (daughter's) roots! His letters are now part of "the family archives."

To the friends and family of John, please accept our condolences. His kind hand reached a long way...

Judge Holschuh swore me in as a USPO in 1992. Throughout my interaction with him he always treated me with respect. I enjoyed meeting with him, in chambers, to discuss cases. We did not agree much of the time on my recommedation but he always valued my opinion. He taught me it was fine to disagree and to argue and it absolutely never had to be personal. When I left the Southern District of Ohio to work for the Department of Homeland Security in Charleston SC, he took time from his busy schedule to call me and wish me the best.
I have one work related item hanging in my office, the diploma, signed by him when he was Chief Judge, appointing me as a United States Probation Officer. The world is just a bit less today since he is no longer here. God bless his soul and my condolences to all his family.
