John Pretiger Obituary

John Henry Pretiger, 58, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at his home in El Paso. Services will be at Saint Jude Catholic Church, 4006 Hidden Way, El Paso TX on Tuesday August 25, 2009 at 11 am. Interment will be at 2 p.m. August 25, 2009 at Memorial Pines Cemetery. John was born to Joseph and Maria Pretiger in Karlsruhe, Germany. He graduated from Parkland High School in 1969. John had a love for music. He was a gifted musician, playing guitar, bass, and accordian, an avid record collector, and an all-around music enthusiast. Twelve years ago, John turned this lifelong passion for music and collecting into a popular and successful El Paso business - The Time Capsule. John cherished his business, and building its success was truly his labor of love. He didn't just serve customers; he created enduring friendships with his customers, many of whom he considered his best and closest friends. John's true passion, however, was his family. He will be deeply missed by the love of his life, Jodi, and his two greatest sources of pride, his sons Justin and Christopher. As successful as he was in business, John always considered his family to be his greatest achievement. John was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Pretiger. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Pretiger, his sons Justin Pretiger (Rachel Pretiger, wife) and Christopher Pretiger, his mother, Maria Pretiger, his brother, Willie Pretiger (Alexis Pretiger, wife) and his sister Mary Ann Madrigal (Adrian Madrigal, husband). In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to CIMA Hospice, 915-778-1222.

Mr John was a great friend to both my daughters and I. We had been his customers for several years, looking for Pokemon, Inuyasha trading cards, and Star Wars figures. Thank you for helping me find rare records and beautiful music that I had listened to with my parents when I was younger from the 40's, 50's, and 60's, including the Beatles that I will not find anywhere else. We are going to truly miss a wonderful friend and his unique store. He was always very kind with all his customers, I'm sure everyone is going to miss him a 'lot. We send our sincere condolences to his family.

To the Pretiger Family, My deepest condolences. I have know your husband and father for over the past 19 years, and he was a great guy. Both my sister and I both worked for him at Furr's. I got to know him from best from the Time Capsule. He loved his two sons more than anything. On many occasions he would speak of them at the store. He worked hard for you, and was so proud of both of you. I loved sitting with him at the store talking about everything from the Beatles, Star Wars, the Furrs' Days and Justin and Christopher. I want you all to know that he loved you all. Life is too Short. John you will be missed.

I went to pick up the statue I ordered only to find out John passed away. You will be missed sir, and my condolences to everyone. He would already know what I liked and would tell me everytime a new Previews would come in with something I more than likely would order. That is detail many people rarely have.
Thanks John for all my statues,

I remember my son telling about free comic book day and how he had to go. Well I took him to the Time Capsule and from then on every week. Each time we would visit with John. It always felt like we were visiting a friend. My son learned to drive but I would still go once in awhil to see how John was doing.Jonh watched my son grow up and go to college. He will be missed beyond words. Our deepest sympathies to his family. The wourld has lost someone very special.

I was twelve when I first entered the Time Capsule. I got a few comics and collectibles but then I really got into it because John would tell me to, "collect what you like." With those words of wisdom I went in every Thursday to pick up my comic books. John really cultivated my love for collecting comic books because of his calm attitude and friendliness. I am now leaving the time capsule twenty-one years old and credit John for helping me grow to be the person I am today.

I will cherish the memories of 'hanging out' at the Time Capsule browsing through comics or albums while some obscure live recording of The Bobby Fuller Four recorded at an El Paso High dance would blare over the speakers. I remember years ago (probably my first or second visit) I was desperate enough to want to sell John a MIB early 80s Star Wars figure (supposedly worth $500) and he offered me $90. Not bad for a $3.98 figure, but he drove a hard bargain, I didn't sell, and he ended up with my $90 over the course of the next several visits! He was always open to letting me sell my comic book creations, post concert events, and let my son Max run wild (against my attempts to thwart him) at the shop. Max always left with a little something John would give him. It seems like I was just really getting to know John over the past few years. We lost a great El Pasoan, a great Parkland Matador, and collectible/music enthusiast, but his memory will last in the hundred (even thousands) who passed through the Time Capsule's doors or knew him outside of the store. Thanks John, for everything. My condolences to John's family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. To honor John, Phi3 COMICS is dedicating our second issue of SPIRALMIND in his name.
One day I may sell that MIB 80's vintage Star Wars figure and I will think about that obscure live recording of The Bobby Fuller Four, remember my friend John, and smile.

I would go to The Time Capsule once in a while and would always walk out of there with something very cool weather it be a toy, a hard to find comic book, or some Gargage Pail Kids Cards.John was always very kind to me.He would always give me insight on whatever I had my eye on at his shop especially on classic vinyl. Everytime I visited his shop I would always ask him if he had any Ramones records and every time I asked we would discuss the history of Punk Rock and the Ramones. Im going to miss that and him singing along to whatever record he had on the over head. You will truely be missed John not only by me, but by the entire El Paso Community. If and when I find a Ramones record Ill always remember you. RIP Mr. Pretiger

He's gone on to his grand reward and has left alot of friends and family wishing that we had a little more time to tell him how much we appreciated him, but I believe John knows.

John always had some thing cool to say whenever you went into his shop and he ALWAYS had some cool tunes playing on his old reel to reel or record player, he constantly offered to make us a mix or give us the cd of the one that was playing.

Alot of us in the comic book scene were privileged enough to know him and to frequent his shop for hard to find records and toys and just to talk to John and shoot the breeze. John had one of the coolest shops in town and he only added to his coolness by letting us nobodys sell our wares and display our home grown comics and art there!

I remember one of the first FCBD's (Free Comic Book Day) we participated in was at the TIME CAPSULE, and John made it so comfortable and fun that just thinking about not being able to walk into his shop again and talk to the man really stabs at our heart!

John was a soft spoken man, but he new good music and pop culture, and he will be sorely missed!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

We thank you John for always making us smile whenever we walked into your shop ! For treating us more like friends than customers!

We were customers but John always treated us like friends. My kids loved going to Time Capsule when they were young and into Pokemon Cards. Every time they had a little money they wanted to go there. John was nice to all of us and we had many long conversations about all the vintage items he had in his shop. I just wanted you to know that he touched lots of lives that you probably never knew about. He was a good man.

Johnny was a great uncle and a great person. I admire how he took the chance to open his store the time capsule and do something that he loved to do. I will always remember the last time we spent together during christmas eve. I made the turkey and he was the first person to come in and eat it(he loved it), I sat with him on the couch all night long and talked to him. Love you always Uncle Johnny rest in peace.
