Working with Matt the last 3 years in the Pediatric ICU made the bad days bearable. Whether he was squirting me with normal saline on the unit or helping me change a 200 lb patient, he would always find a way to make me laugh. I wish he could have known the huge impact he made on his patient's lives. He is someone I will remember forever and he will be truly missed.

To Matt's friends and family: I feel so lucky to have met Matt this summer in NYC. There I was, just a UNC mom among a crowd of UNC grads and friends, yet Matt took the time to have a meaningful conversation with me. I was so impressed with his plans for grad school and his thorough understanding of the healthcare system. It was exciting to me, having worked in the healthcare profession, to hear his enthusiasm, intelligence and commitment to making a difference in our broken system. This is a tragic loss on so many levels.

Most of all I am heartbroken for my daughter and all of your friends who loved you dearly, and enjoyed so many wonderful times together. Thank you for making their world brighter, and for making that one NYC evening so special -- and an even more cherished memory.

I knew Matt from nursing school. He was always so full of life and laughter. Matt was one of those rare stars that God blesses us with for a short while to show us his true beauty. When Matt smiled he definitely made life more beautiful. One of the best ways to touch another person is to make their soul smile and Matt did this everyday. I feel so privileged to have known him.

He will be missed and always in our hearts.

Matt was the one to constantly bring light and sunshine into our unit. His spirit and energy lift everyone at three am, when the night is dragging. I feel so blessed to have had him touch my life. My heart goes out to all those, like me, trying to make sense of this when we just can't. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Matt was a leader at the School of Nursing, competent and inspiring to others. His smile was warm and infectious; his energy for tackling difficult tasks an inspiration to others. What a loss to his family, friends and the profession. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

As almost everyone before has said, there was something infectious, contagious, warm and vital about Matt that can't quite be articulated. Everyone who has had the good fortune to spend time in his presence is in my thoughts in this unfair and difficult time.

Matt was one of the most energetic and enthusiastic people I have ever known. I will always remember the time that we spent guarding together at UNC. It was one of the greatest summers I have ever had, and Matt's excitement and energy are what made it so memorable. Matt will be missed by all who knew him. You are all in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time.

One of my favorite things about Matt was that he was always himself. I wish I could tell him how much I respected him for this trait and how much I enjoyed his company. I've never laughed so hard than when Matt was around. The room brightened whenever he entered.

I'm having difficulty attempting to describe Matt and why exactly I'll miss him so. That's because he was unique. Other entries have used "zest for life," "infectious," "energetic." Put most succinctly, he was special. I'll carry his memory with me for the rest of my life. The world truly isn't the same place without him.

To his family and friends, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

When someone you love dies, and you're not expecting it, you don't lose them all at once; you lose them in pieces over a long time and their scent fades from the pillows and even from the clothes in their closet and drawers. Gradually, you accumulate the parts of them that are gone. Just when the day comes, when there's a particular missing part that overwhelms you with the feelings that they're gone forever, there comes another day, and another specifically missing part.

Matt, you will be loved, thought about and missed forever by many.

Matt's favorite Tshirt said it all, "We find smiles." He had a way of brightening any day and smiles followed him everywhere. His family and friends are all better because of him- you're all in my thoughts.

Matt, my heart is broken. Not only for you and your family, but for all of us friends who are now left with just your memories. We got together last night and couldn't stop laughing thinking about some of the great times we had. Everyone is crushed, but we are so grateful that you were a part of our lives. What would we have done without our pretty bird? Our lives are forever changed.

To Matt's family, I have been so blessed to have Matt in my life through my time at Carolina and since we graduated. Matt has brought more laughs and smiles than you can even imagine. Some of my absolute favorite moments in life, the ones that I'll relive over and over in my mind, were with Matt. We are devastated over his loss and have you all in our thoughts.
