MAXINE HUFFMAN Obituary

At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by her three daughters and many generations of her family. She married Vernon J. Huffman on Oct. 21, 1941. Dr. Huffman graduated from South Side High School in 1938. She worked for Allison Engines and Fort Wayne Tailoring before beginning college at age 38. After retiring, she became employed by Allen County Education Fund for 12 years to develop curriculum. She developed the Parent Literacy Enrichment branch of Project READS. Dr. Huffman was my favorite professor. I took her for two undergraduate classes and was privileged to work twice in her Reading Clinic for graduate credit. She visited my fourth grade classroom at Waterloo Elementary School where I taught for 32 years. Such an uplifting and genuine person, always encouraging the best. I still remember her beginning our class with a Snoopy cartoon reading. One student was usually late to class because of work. One evening he opened the classroom door very slowly to sneak in without being noticed until Dr. Huffman said, "Peek-A-Boo." Such down to earth treatment taught me to look for humor in the classroom. I am indeed fortunate to have known Dr. Huffman. The family has my deepest sympathy and appreciation.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. I met Dr. Huffman when I was an education student at IPFW in 1986. She was a true inspiration to so many students. I remember how her eyes sparkled when she smiled and spoke about the teaching profession. I admired her for her passion for children and teaching. It was an honor to know her.
