WILLIAM CALIN Obituary

CALIN, WILLIAM
William ('Bill') Compaine Calin, retired Graduate Research Professor in French Literature at the University of Florida, passed away on May 20, 2018 at Lake City Medical Center. He was 82.
Bill was born on April 4, 1936, in Newington, Connecticut, the only child of Isadore ('Jack') Calin and Nettie Compaine, originally from Romania and Russia.
He completed his undergraduate degree at Yale College (1957) and received his Ph.D. from Yale University (1960). He taught at Dartmouth, Stanford, the University of Oregon, and, since 1988, the University of Florida. He was a visiting professor at academic institutions in North America and Europe.
Bill studied in Paris during his junior year in college. He fell in love with French Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Standing in front of Chartres Cathedral, as the sun was setting on the old stones, he wrote that he had found his calling: to study the literature and culture of medieval France. From then on, in his teaching and writing alike, he communicated both his knowledge and his love of the rich contributions that France has made to world culture.
Bill won eleven national/international grants, including Fulbright, Guggenheim, NEH, and Woodrow Wilson. For nine years, he was the International Vice President of the Association Internationale d'Études Occitanes. He was on the editorial board of numerous journals and was on the advisory board or an officer in many international organizations.
Bill published twelve books covering a broad range of French literature, from the earliest epics of France, through the lyric production of poets such as Guillaume de Machaut, to modernity. His expertise also included the so-called 'minority' languages and literatures of the British Isles and France, and the ways in which the modern world imagines, studies, and understands the Middle Ages. Two of his books received the American Library Association Outstanding Academic Book of the Year award. In addition, Bill published over 120 articles and book chapters on many topics, and delivered 230 conference papers and lectures.
Married twice, Bill had no children or siblings, but is survived by the academic 'daughters and sons' whom he mentored with assiduous care and acerbic wit. His friends will remember his love of conversation, his enjoyment of debate, and his wicked sense of humor. Bill had a special gift for lively yet friendly political disagreement.
Bill, a convert in the Anglican Communion, was a devout Christian. Nurtured by deep reflection and theological understanding, his faith taught him humility and suffused his work in ways not immediately apparent. Bill was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Gainesville, Florida.
Even to the end of his life, Bill was busy planning his next lecture and his next book. His retirement from the University of Florida became effective only five days before his death. His steadfast determination to overcome his medical challenges, together with his joie de vivre will leave a lasting impression on his caretakers. While he published more in one lifetime than many could do in five, his creative and analytical energies would have taken five lifetimes to exhaust. He will be dearly missed by his many friends and long-remembered in academia for his brilliant contributions to French and Medieval Studies.
A memorial service will take place in the Fall. Please visit

Having not learned of Bill's passing until recently, this message comes late. But hopefully it will still be read by some of those who knew Bill and will reflect well on such a deserving personality. During my earliest undergraduate years at the University of Oregon, Bill was one of the two most influential professors (the other was Françoise Durrant). Always exploratory and looking for the big picture, his specialty field in Medieval studies was simply en entry point and a touchstone from which he often ventured far afield, motived by his insatiable love of learning, in the pursuit of the widest horizons. Indeed, my most memorable seminar with Bill, long before the subject became fashionable everywhere else, was devoted to the literature of la francophonie africaine. Learning from other postings that he was still actively employed as faculty until the very eve of his passing does not surprise me and fulfills something he told me when I visited him at the University of Florida, while a I was attending a linguistics conference held on that campus back in 1992. I am paraphrasing, but he said something to the effect of 'Why would I ever retire? I am doing what I love with all the resources at my disposal of an endowed chairship, already in a choice location where everyone else must await their retirements to join me. What life could possibly be more gratifying than the one I am already living?' And how can I forget the debt I owe Bill, who so graciously invested precious time in the drafting of letters of recommendation for me when I first entered the academic job market and secured my own position. I am glad to know that he ran the face of faith with endurance, and has now finished it. I only regret that in my own self-absorbed busyness I did not endeavor to pay him visits on other occasions while he was still of this world. I am most definitely the one who is the poorer for it. Thank you, Bill.

Mon cher papa,
Not a day goes by that I don't think about you and all that I learned from you. Impeccable, inquisitive, humble, passionate, witty, caring. You were and always will be my role model.
Until we meet again, rest in the arms of our Loving Father.

Bill was the most generous colleague it has been my privilege to encounter in more than four decades of university teaching. He supported the discipline with verve, humanity, and incredible energy, and he was selfless in helping others find their intellectual and practical way. He is survived by a legacy of critical writing that, because it reflected enduring literary approaches and values, will not grow stale but will continue to provide a guide through the marvelous world of medieval literature. One of a kind. He will be missed.

Dr. Calin, vous manquez déjà à tous vos "enfants" doctorants. Profitez bien de vos balades, là-haut, avec tous ces poètes et autres auteurs que vous avez tant aimé et que vous retrouvez enfin. Cheers !

I was always glad to see Bill Calin on UF campus, he was always a pleasure to speak with and he had a gift of turning learning into dialogue. He inspired us and brought the best out of those around him. He was a founder of new Medieval Studies, changing the way we think about an era, its art and literary contributions. He will not be forgotten on the UF campus where he gave so freely of himself and his time and was loved and by so many. Peace and love Bill, your memory is blessing for many and myself included. We will keep our fond memories of you close until we meet again.

It speaks to Bill's eagerness to expand his horizons constantly, that he undertook the study of modern Occitan at the age of 50, which is when and where I got to know him. His wit and his rigor worked hand in hand. He will be sorely missed.

Bill was the best of all possible scholarly mentors. He guided me well at the very beginning of my career when he was at Oregon and I was at Willamette. But he remained a good, caring friend right until his last days.He was the great teacher of my wife, Mary Anne O'Neil, whom he guided and helped throughout her whole career.

Bill cared for his students as colleagues and scholars but also as friends. We will miss him greatly.
