Alice Gertrude Fortier

1921 - 2015

Alice Gertrude MacLellan Fortier of Rocky Hill, CT died January 16, 2015. She was born in Inverness, Nova Scotia, May 20, 1921, daughter of Ronald Allen MacLellan and Mary Isabel MacKinnon MacLellan of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. She graduated from St Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She was employed as a dietitian at St. Mary's Hospital in Montreal. She married Norman L. Fortier, MD of Berlin New Hampshire in 1945 in San Francisco, CA. They resided in New York City where she worked as a dietitian. They moved to Rocky Hill in 1948 and twelve years later to West Hartford. During these years they raised four children. After the death of her beloved husband in 1976, she resided in Clinton for 30 years where she worked briefly. She returned to Rocky Hill in 2010 to be closer to her children. She was also predeceased by her sisters Mary Catherine MacLellan of Inverness and Josephine Swallow of Antigonish, her brothers Alexander MacLellan, Donald Francis MacLellan and Neil Allen MacLellan. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Alexander Fortier, MD and his wife Carol of Avon, CT, Norma Fortier Ingram and her husband David of Avon, Susan Fortier Hogan and her husband Donald of Glastonbury and Lawrence Fortier, MD and his wife Evelyn of Essex. In addition she is survived by 7 grandchildren, Lorna Fortier O'Malley of Winchendon, MA, Mark Ingram of Avon, Catherine Ingram of Washington, D.C., Eric Hogan of Blacksburg VA, Kurt Hogan of Charlotte, NC, Katherine Fortier of La Jolla, CA, and Kimberly Fortier Leidl of Ithaca, NY. She is also survived by 4 great grandchildren, Marissa Adams, Jessica Hogan, Jacob Hogan and Daniel Hogan of Blacksburg, VA. Her family wishes to thank the staffs at Apple Rehab of Rocky Hill and Hartford Hospital's Paliative Care unit for the excellent care given to Alice. Funeral services will be private and will include a Mass of Christian burial.
