MAGOWAN, Kathleen
Kathleen Magowan, 87, of Simsbury, passed away on Wednesday, (August 17, 2011) while under hospice care at Mclean's. She was born in New York City but returned to her childhood home in Bolivia, where she lived until she was six. Her family moved to New York, where they resided until coming to Connecticut to make Simsbury their home in 1942. Kathleen attended Saint Joseph's College and graduated in the First Collegiate Nursing Class in 1947. She worked in the Pediatric Unit at Saint Francis Hospital for several years before deciding to become an elementary school teacher. She graduated with a Masters in Education from Hillyer College in 1953. While she never married or had children of her own, she had many children in her life. She taught first grade for the Simsbury Public Schools for a period of 35 years at Central, Belden and Squadron Line Schools. Many former students who still reside in the area fondly recall learning the three R's (reading, writing and arithmetic) from Miss Magowan. Kathleen retired from teaching in 1984 but stayed very active in the community as a volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Bank in addition to driving others to their doctors appointments or food shopping. She enjoyed her water exercise classes at Mclean, the exercise classes at Eno Memorial Hall and the wonderful monthly outings she shared with her friends. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Wilhelmina (Greener), her sister, Patricia Clark and her twin brother, Robert. She is survived by a niece, Kathleen Scheidemann of North Carolina, and nephews, John and Mark Clark, both of California. Her cheery disposition, talkative nature and wonderful personality will be dearly missed by many close friends and members of the community who came to know her. Many thanks are extended to the staff at Mclean's who took wonderful care of her in the final months and weeks of her life.

I've known Kathleen all of my life and she taught my sons in school. In the last year she was in a group that I facilitate at McLean Home. " Reminisce with Mary." She added so much to the group and we will all miss her stories and beautiful smile. Mary Mitchell/simsbury

Miss Magowan was my first grade teacher at Central in 1959/1960. She was THE sweetest, kindest, prettiest woman. I well remember how before-her-time she was in helping the few children who did not speak any English or had learning disabilities. She just took it in stride and treated those kids like her own, with love and concern. What a role model! I'll never forget her!

Miss Magowen was my first grade teacher at Central Grammar and I'm 64!! What a legacy she has left. It was probably her first year of teaching when I was 6, and it was definitely what she was meant to do. She was so caring and devoted. It was a 'Wonderful Life' growing up in Simsbury and attending Central Grammar for the first seven years of school, and Miss Magowan was a large part of that and she will live in the hearts and memories of so many.

Miss Magowan taught me to read as well 45 years ago at Central School. I, too, will be forever grateful for her contribution in kicking off my love for reading. Years later, I followed in her footsteps and became an elementary teacher. Blessings to you, Miss Magowan. Your legacy lives on in all the children you touched.

Miss Magowen will always hold a special place in my heart, for she was my very favorite teacher. First grade, over 50 years ago.....she made me feel special, as she did all her students. And she always remembered me when I saw her around town, even up to just a couple years ago when I last saw her in the store. She was a wonderful caring person and touched the lives of so many. I am truly blessed to have known her.
