NEVIN, Albert George Jr.
Albert George Nevin Jr., Born in Rockville, CT, February 5, 1949, died at Hartford Hospital January 10, 2013 of complications from colon cancer. Predeceased by his father, Albert George Nevin Sr., he leaves behind his mother Mary, daughters Amanda Nevin and her fiancé Shawn Ellison, Jessica Russell her husband Thomas Russell, long-time companion Shelley Moran, brothers Robert, David, Dennis and John, beloved grandsons Jordan and Justice, and former wife Deborah. He also leaves behind his aunts, Edna McCarthy and Florence Rogers, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, including cousins Gloria Schenk and Marva Thompson in Jamaica, W.I.A Rockville native and life-long Connecticut resident, George attended Vernon elementary schools and Rockville High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a Vietnam veteran. George worked at Manchester Memorial Hospital for 20 years in a support position in the Operating Room. He spoke often of how much he enjoyed interacting with patients, doctors and staff. Photography was one of his hobbies and he enjoyed developing photos in his home darkroom. His real passion, one to which he devoted most of his life, was the sport of Judo. A 5th degree black belt, George was a regular tournament competitor in his early years. As an instructor and mentor he introduced three generations of students to Judo. Until recently George served on the Board of Directors of the Cornerstone Foundation of Vernon, a charitable organization dedicated to feeding, sheltering and clothing those in need. When he wasn't bicycling around north-central Connecticut, playing Saxophone along with his collection of jazz records or experimenting with recipes in the kitchen, George indulged in his other great passion; fishing. He enjoyed the ritual of preparation almost more than casting for fish. He especially loved fishing with his grandchildren and friends and introducing others to the sport. Although it cannot be said that he struck fear in the hearts of Farmington River fish, he was content to have caught his share and always released the fish that blundered onto his hook.
A memorial service will be held at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor, CT 06074 on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 2-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, George has asked that tax deductible donations be made to the United States Judo Association (a (501)(c)(3) organization). Please make checks payable to: "USJA" Attn: Katrina Davis - George Nevin Judo Fund P.O. Box 1880 Tarpon Springs, FL. 34688-1880. David. Dennis, John, Mary, Bobby & family, I am so sorry to hear of the death of George. I am shocked. He was far too young. I was searching for another obituary in Manchester when I came across his name. I can't believe he is gone. He was a good guy and his passing triggered a flood of memories. Life is far too short and it goes by in a blink. My thoughts, prayers and love to all of you.

I well remember working with George on the surgical unit at Manchester Hospital. He always had something reassuring to say and he made the patients feel comfortable even through they were probably scared of what was to come.
My deepest sympathy to all his loved one, may you find comfort in memories of happy times spent together.

Shelley, Amanda, Jessica, Mary and brothers
I knew George at MMH for many years and through his being with Shelley for many years.
From the MMH days, I still laugh thinking about his Hollween performances. Tina was my favorite. I also would often see him as he was transferring patients and noticed that he would be conversing with the patient . He was thoughtful in many ways. I also remember one time he took a blind women on a bicycle ride built for two. as we rode along, you could see him working hard and the women was smiling as she felt the wind and breeze. These last couple of years have had difficult moments but George had Shelly and his daughters that worked hard to take care of him..

Dear Mary (Mom), Bobby, David, Dennis, John, Deb, family and friends. After attending the memorial service on Saturday for George, I wish I could have stood up and talked about all the times I had the pleasure of being with him. From Linden Place to Park Place to Vernon Ave. The good times at Redman's Hall, “The George”, hanging out at Burger Chef. All good times.
We always had fun doing some crazy stuff. I was at the water balloon fight that Clarence mentioned and I remember Mom wanting to get whoever got her with a water balloon even after she got hit by a car. George was the only one who had some common sense and suggested we stop, so we did.
I'll never forget how we wanted to scare ‘the girls', so we told them that the Rockville Tower was haunted. We set up a fake ‘dead man' on the steps with the help of Gene and Chet.
I could go on forever with stories but it's time to say Goodbye to my ‘Soul Brother”. George I love you like a brother and I'm happy and honored that your family treated me like part of your family. Simmy

Around two score and 7 years ago I went to Rockville High School with George . I have not seen him or been in contact with him since. My recollections of him are all postive. George carried himself in a way that made it comfortable to be in his company. He was considerate and never looked to hurt anyone's feelings. It's a trait that too few people display.
Plus as a bonus he was "One Cool Cat!"
To all of his family and friends I am truly sorry about your loss.

George was a wonderful and humble human being. He was my first Judo instructor, and as I watched how he volunteered and dedicated his time to helping strangers, I considered him a life instructor as well. The earth is left a better place because George lived in it.
To the family of George Nevin, I am deeply sorry for your loss. George was not only an instructor, but lived his life as an example. He was an amazing human being that will be missed by many. God bless.

First of all...I want to thank each and every one of you who honor my brothers passing on this page.It makes the Nevin family proud to know he touched so many lives. He was a kind, caring, and giving person with a big heart. To me he was more than a brother, he was my friend, someone I could get advice from, someone who could make me see all sides of an issue. Someone who made me laugh harder and longer than anyone. I'll miss that..Anyone who knew him knows he had no problem telling you what he thought on any given subject. I'll miss that...he showed me that you should try to live a full life, a life of happiness...live your dream. We talked every day....we always found something to laugh about every call. I will miss him. Thanks "Sonny" I love you....And
Thank you to all of you who loved him too.

Dear Family,
I know all of our hearts are heavy and tears will continue to flow; but this one thing I really want us all to know and always remember about George--despite his health challenges, he still managed to have a smile on his face and a song in his heart!!! Like George, let us extend our hands (palms facing up), to help lift a bow-downed head, or heal a broken heart!!! May the choicest blessings of God be with each and every one of us during this difficult time of sorrow!!!

You taught me to laugh when I wanted to cry, you taught me to lighten up when I was serious, you taught me that the only thing that was important in life was family and good friends, you taught me that you get respect if you give respect, you taught me that money was not that important but being content with what you have was. You also taught me to always have plan "B" and one more thing, love life as it comes and please " Dont make this a project"!
You will be remembered and missed for your laughter, kindness and wisdomn.
My deepest sympathy to all who knew and loved him.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
